whether or not a person is a natural born citizen. i think it's going to cut along partisan lines. i also believe that when these secretaries of state receive the application by donald trump, they're going to have to determine if they're going to put it on there and then allow it to be challenged by groups in other people who say he's not committed -- not supposed to be on there because of the acts he's committed. my concern is, this whole process is going to go on and on for months and probably years. so many times with voting rights issues, they allow the person to stay on the ballot and then a determination is made even after the election takes place. the person could be on the ballot and voted on. they shouldn't be there in the first place. it's not determined until it's too late. >> how disruptive could this be to the primary season. let's say there's a patchwork of states where you have some putting trump on the ballot and

story. reporting this morning, it is detailing why joe biden's team split with the democratic party's longtime lawyer on voting rights issues, mark elias. elias is the gold standard in democratic circles for voting litigation. what happened here? what was the split actually about? >> there are two things. one is strategic, and one is a bit more about style or about, like, personal tensions. the strategic dispute here is that, you know, joe biden's team think that mark elias is being, in some way, too aggressive. doesn't the conservative makeup of the judiciary right now, that filing all of these lawsuits has the chance to actually create bad precedent and backfire. on the personal level, they just -- you know, biden's team has just felt that mark has not really kept them in the loop. in several instances, mark -- biden's team would find out mark had filed a lawsuit by finding out about it on twitter or

responsible for voting rights issues. as we know this country, there are a few questions around voting rights. some of us had warrants surrounding voting rights. in addition to all the police brutality. everyone can unanimously say that what happened in memphis was problematic. what really did happen in memphis? how do we get here? that is the question, how do we make sure that there is not another tyre nichols. so it's important that we have this oversight, and we use in a smart way. the idea that next week, i'm going to be dealing with twitter and hunter biden's elapsed top, these are the priorities? that is a problem, when we have people dying in the streets. so i think this was a very common sense amendment. and marjorie taylor greene seems to agree, kind of. >> kind of. you brought her up. let's play, this what she had to say about tyre nichols. >> i do agree with you about tyre nichols death, i watched

as you say i like to talk straight plain and simple. just about 6 to 7 weeks until mid terms, what else can congress do on voting rights issues that we are seeing across the country? >> well sharpton -- 50 clergy up. they had a simple point. keep voting on the voting rights act. keep voting on making sure that the child tax credit is permanent. that is a difference between somebody being evicted or being able to stay in their apartment. keep voting to make sure that we actually are giving folks health care. and a livable wage. you know the republicans vote 70 80 times to take away people 's health care. we figure we vote once and then we are done with it. now let's go on the record and vote and show the american people what the republicans actually stand for and what we stand for. we need to engage clergy for. -- i'm sick and tired of them

people in this country who have been participating in our economy for years now who are fully vetted and could immediately come in and help our economy, and yet there is no movement on that. mpp is still in place a month plus after the supreme court said it could be taken out. title 42 is still in effect. two different things, but related to something that could help our economy, senator. >> exactly. and the studies are out there, the data is out there, if we were to advance pathways to citizenship, not automatic but pathways to citizenship for so many immigrants that have earned it that are here today, it would be a benefit to the economy for everybody. but, sadly, immigration is just one example. we expect hostile amendments this weekend possibly on the right to choice or the right to an abortion. marriage equality, civil rights protections, voting rights

doesn't all have to happen in the first calendar year of a presidency. and in fact some of these things sometimes take time. my distinct impression from the president in recent weeks and certainly the last couple weeks is that he is more focused than he had been before on the voting rights question, the voting rights issues, and i would not be surprised to see that move to top of the agenda especially since it now appears that it is going to take time to get the build back better agenda or as much of it as he can through both houses of congress. it may be in pieces. it may take some time. i still believe he is going to get, if not all of it, most of it. and i think it will be a very big deal when he gets it.

william, virginia, where all marine officers train, and i still have probably at least an hour and a half until i get to the capitol. i left richmond yesterday at 1:00. i live in richmond. i was trying to get up to d.c. for a voting rights meeting. i'm working on voting rights issues, and the meeting was at 8:00 and i wanted to do it in person. it's turned into what will end up being a 27 or 28 hour ordeal, unlike anything i have ever seen. >> epic, just an epic odyssey that you're on. you have been in your car for 27 hours. how are you not losing your mind? >> well, i'm taking advantage of talking to a lot of people on the phone. the voting rights meeting i was trying to get to, we switched to conference call. i had a lot of other meetings today, switched by conference call, and as soon as friends and family and my senate colleagues heard that i was stuck with thousands out on the interstate, they called too.

>> reporter: well, it's a pretty one-sided conversation, and i think that's part of the frustration. i mean, we've been watching all day long, these remembernesses. it's just democrats here participating in this and that's my biggest disappointment from this last year is how quickly everything that this entire community, the thousands of people who make up the capitol hill community, that we all experienced together in largely the same way a year ago, became, within a matter of days, if not hours, just another thing that at least in this setting, was about which jersey you were wearing, the political spin, the political advantage. we talk about it in the same ways we talk about any other political issue and when i started reading statements today from republicans who weren't here, talking about the idea there might have been democratic overreach in how they connected the january 6th to voting rights

filibuster is the be all and end all here in washington, but these anti-voter bills that are passing are 100% partisan. as near as i can tell, no democrats in any states have voted for any of these bills. it's this irony of it's purely partisan in the states and yet we can't do anything about it because of the filibuster decrees that you have to have bipartisan support. i'd love to have bipartisan support. so far, the republicans have said no, we're not going to talk about these voting rights issues. we are where we are. i'm hoping american people will weigh in because democracy itself is at stake. >> 57% of all democrats support a simple majority to pass legislation and 15 percentage points more of republicans do. i hear what you're saying about

open question here. there's also the reality that you're heading into a midterm year where voting rights and actually codifying them at the federal level is something that democrats are probably going to be campaigning on. what voters are going to have to now decide is what democrats have done with their majorities in the house and senate. voters are going to have to decide if that's enough for them to continue turning out at the polls, especially when we've seen inaction on voting rights and a litany of other progressive policy ideals including things like the build back better agenda that's still languish agent the start of this year. democrats trying to use both january 6th and the upcoming holiday next week as an impetus for action. it's unclear how it pushes forward. >> on the idea of the rules change front, we've seen a number of things talked about here. whether it's a car vow to the filibuster just on voting rights issues. a broader change to the rules to put more pressure on the minority. i mean, feel free to nerd out here a little bit. is there'ven any agreement on
