>> i think, jonathan, it means a lot. what we saw at the trial is the needle didn't move. a lot of us were looking at what an actual conviction would look like. here it is laid out. people disagree or feel that they're probably less likely to vote, it looks like, for a convicted criminal. i think this will spawn the democrats and the biden campaign to hone in on the theory that this is a convicted criminal, and do you want a convicted criminal in the white house. >> so let's talk about how the biden team is responding. we played a little bit there on friday. as i had reported the week before, the president's first remarks were always going to be about, look, we have to respect the verdict, respect the process, no matter what it may be. that's what he did. his campaign has been a little more aggressive. and certainly his fund-raising appeals. some democrats are talking about it. plenty aren't. what do you think the right approach is here because i know there are some in the party who think, look, this won't be the only issue. voters are going to talk about voting rights and inflation. does the party seem more reluctant? what's your sense? >> i think from my reporting, when i speak to democrats, they are a little renascent to slam trump and more focused on the judicial system orr propping up the judicial system that republicans and donald trump are trying to tear down by saying that the court case was illegitimate and fraudulent and, you know, just someone specifically targeting him. so their defense has been to just continuously say that, you know, no one is above the law. and i think they're following in the footsteps of their principal or candidate joe biden. as you mentioned, the campaign side is a little different, and, yes, both campaigns use this opportunity as a fund-raising tool, a nlds we heard large numbers come from both sides. but i think on the political side -- or the government's side, there will be candidates and members of congress will be a little more measured in how they respond. republicans, on the other hand, have mirrored exactly what trump is saying, that the court case was just rigged and he had no opportunity for a fair trial. >> yeah. and i think that's a really good point. the president himself, look, he's going to be a little bit muted, especially when his son is on trial. i think he wants to stay above the fray when it comes to legal matters, but it's about the two parties. the republicans are saying it's a witch hunt. the democrats as we discussed are a little more muted. they're saying it's another breaking through. my question is isn't it the democrats' job to say over and over, look, this is a convicted felon, this is someone you don't want near the oval office again and make those few points because those few points could make a difference? >> i think we saw a couple of members say stuff like that like connelly, swalwell. they were a little more aggressive in how they approached the situation on social media. and i think especially moving toward the upcoming debate, you'll start to see a little more of the -- you know, the louder members of congress talk about this. but overall, especially when we talk about those vulnerable democrats, i think they will focus on upholding or propping up the justice system just to combat or contrast what republicans are saying. >> it's going to be such a fascinating debate to see how the democrats play this in the coming weeks. you're right. the debate itself looming itself. thank you again. still ahead here, history made in mexico. the country has elected its first female president. we'll bring you more about what you need to know about the country's new leader. also ahead, an update on two water main breaks in atlanta that have left many homes without running water and shut down scores of businesses. those stories and a check on sports and weather when we come right back. right back nexium 24hr prevents heartburn acid for twice as long as pepcid. get all-day and all-night heartburn acid prevention with just one pill a day. choose acid prevention. choose nexium. - so this is pickleball?
