0 to msu police, there is no longer a threat on campus, and no need to shelter in place. certainly, terrifying moments throughout the evening, as word of the shooting spread throughout campus, and law enforcement immediately spread out among the facilities, or to make sure everybody was safe, and it is okay, as they continue to search for the suspect, which we now know has been found dead. i want to turn to maureen holiday, who's a reporter with our nbc affiliate, wilx in michigan, she was at the press conference. all right maria, and for those joining us this hour, tell us what you've, heard and what we know in this hour. >> yeah, francis, what we're working on right now, police are trying to figure out the suspects affiliation with the university, like he said, he was found with the self inflicted gunshot wound, they died from outside of campus. police are working to determine his motive behind this shooting. police are describing this whole situation as a nightmare. like you said earlier, there is no active threat, and shelter in place is now over, that means yours cannot leave campus, who can come pick up their kids if they like, what we know so far is i have been three fatalities, to wherever, keyhole was one side msu union, that is adjacent to berkey all. that's all stemmed from reports of shots being fired around 8:15 a.m. tonight, that's when police arrived on campus, and thousands of those two locations. we don't know how many students were inside those two locations at the time of the shooting, police are working to, of course, make sure that the students who have been affected, and the families that have been affected, and making sure that they feel like they're being taken care, of their offering services to anybody affected, by the shooting. police say that this is still a fluid situation, there investigation is gonna continue throughout the night, we're gonna receive another update around 1:30 this morning. so in just under half an, hour we should be receiving another update, police say that their investigation will most likely continue throughout the night, of, course we are going to be here throughout the night, just waiting for these hourly updates the police have been given us. , now i'm reporting live in east lansing, -- >>, moreno and ask, you given that there is so much tension in the past several hours in this community, on campus, with word of the shooting, with where the suspect may still be out there. talk about it now, especially given the fact that this shelter in place has now been lifted. and the overall sense what may be going through the community right now. >>, yeah i think the community really just had, a breath of relief, when we found out that, the shooter was no longer a threat to the public, it's definitely going to be a long healing process, police are saying that they are now in this transition phase of continuing their investigation but also making sure the people on campus and families connected to campus just make sure that they feel safe now and we didn't hear of any prior reports of threats to the campus before the shooting so really just now trying to figure what the motive was behind it. >> and that is what investigators were looking at during the press conference. they were hesitant they did not want to say anymore about the suspect, about the shooter they don't want to say anything much about the victims now because it's still very early in this investigation they didn't want to say what kind of weapons were used at all in this as we take an image here or video and some of the students who have gathered on campus earlier. and berkey all, and also union hall it is next to, it gives a sense that area, where their cases going out time in 8 pm, or little after eight when this happened, where their students milling about, in union where i believe there's a rec center possibly cafeteria as well. >> yeah, of course, i mean it's a college campus, so everybody is walking about, we sure there was classes going on at the time and ricky hall, it's a place where historians go eat, to study, to hang out with her friends, it's popular common space for students on campus. it's not strange that there are probably large bouts, they're so of course as this night goes, on and we learn more about it, hoping to find out how many people were inside those buildings at the time of the shooting, i like you mentioned, earlier police aren't mentioning anything about the victims, and that's out of respect for the families that are affected. so we're hoping to learn more about the conditions of the five people that were hurt, so far we know that there is a range of injuries. some are life-threatening, so we are gonna be definitely keeping our eye on that. >> and give us a sense of the campus and itself. i understand, we campuses 50,000 people large when it comes to faculty, staff, administrators, employees there on campus. give us a sense also, as far as affinity. and the other facilities there, for those who are not familiar. yeah, so it's a really large campus, like you mentioned is over 60,000 students, so everybody is walking around, if you can think to maybe the size, cemented penn state, there's a downtown area, you have a lot of traffic on campus, it really is just an entire community that lives around this university. so it's, families it's students, it's older adults, you name it, there really is a wide range of ages that are here, and a lot of families, it's very large, you're always walking around, driving to campus. again, mentioned driving to downtown east lansing, says a pretty big campus, and i know it's a very large community that is going to be taking a long time to heal from this. >> given that, it is remarkable that consistent remarks we've been getting from the faculty, professor louis spoke with earlier, and soon saying that once this happened, once word of the spread, the law enforcement immediately descended on campus, they saw them everywhere pretty much outside boardrooms, outside facilities. talk about that, and basically how, when you have a situation like, this of course it is remarkable when you get law enforcement there, in just minutes. but it seems to be extraordinarily so in this case tonight. >> yeah, so police were saying earlier that, the immediate reaction from other law enforcement, from across the state, whether it be the university, local, state, or even federally with the fbi here. hundreds of first responders responded to the shooting. and you can see man with armed guns going in and out of pulse, and dorm rooms, and academic felt buildings. it really got a sense of just how serious is really, was and how scary was for the community, knowing that the suspect was still at large at the time, and these first responders are going through these buildings. yeah, it was definitely a very large response. because you have a lot of ground to cover here at michigan state university, we're talking about how large is campuses it really is its own little city here. and it was definitely a full force response from the police. >> i'm sure, reassuring to the family and friends assyrians they're not taking away from the three people who have died from the shooting and also the five people who are in the hospital right now some of them those life threatening injuries. i appreciate you being with us marine holiday, appreciate your perspective, thank you so much as we await this press conference in about 20 minutes or so, enforcement i expect him to date is again, around 1:30 eastern times, on the latest as far as a shooting on the campus of michigan state university. i don't bring in now andrew miller, a 21-year-old journalism student at msu, he was a student union building when the shooting took place. andrew, i appreciate you being with us -- mission loungers, emptiness was one guy walking towards, me and panicked look at his, face is like there's a, shooter go back to room. so i got my other coworker, and i went back to the room, sort of, lights close the doors, and we sat there for what felt like an eternity. think was 15 20 minutes, kind of listening to noises, hearing flashlights. they finally came in and got us, i called 9-1-1, they would know that we are down there. and they sent someone to come get us, we did their rifles out and everything, and it's pretty tense. >> andrei can still hear in your voice that you really sound like we are still shaken up. describe the range of emotions, what you're feeling now given what you've went through and nine and now there is no longer threats and just overall been in the situation that i can imagine is so surreal for you. >> i think it's just kicking in right now, i spent the last five hours on the dorm, with other kids who are freaked out. i don't, know the whole thing is pretty out of my experience, we don't really realize that this is happening to you, and next thing you know see all these police officers everywhere. and rights takes, new since this whole mess. >> what we are conversations with your friends, and others like being in that room for that long not knowing what was going on and trying to comfort each other and trying to reassure family members who are so worried about you >> there's a lot of, for a one point somehow they had been informed that there is a shooter in building we were in, so we made our way to the hallway, we're taking cover in there for a few minutes. so most of the time we're just looking is, ghana trying to figure out what was going on just try to make sure our friends were safe clean numbers and stuff but realistically though after a couple hours in the dirt dorm fears definitely listed people just seem to be happy to be safe and alive. >> we're able to contact your family during this time? >> yes i was able to contact my family. >> talk to me about that conversation tell me what was your conversation like. >> i'm from the conversations we are definitely tough, i hadn't really absorbed everything that happened when i called them, so they would have to stay away. and yeah, i felt bad that they had to be at home having to watch this on tv. >> and you are telling, me when you first found out about the shooting, and somebody informed you immediately ran into the room, you weather the door, want to lock them position in turn the lights off. how instinctive was that for you, and your friends, and your mates. >> i was actually just talking about this with a coworker. -- there's a lot more to be done growing up clearly. iran quiet, everyone is done what they should. -- >> and that is unfortunate reality, it's good that everybody knows what to do, because it's routine, there's a part of it and it's that growing up, going through all these lockdowns, and soon go through, parents go through with their children, despite being a parent of the student >> what is going to happen next with her group, with your friends? i heard some voices in the background, i can imagine now but this is a shooting on shelter looked at on, campus love sun's out in, about trying to find friends a lot of, winds to make sure it's okay, and share their stories as well. that's the leon certainly and the reality that there are three people dead, from this, and that there are five people in the hospital, with these serious injuries. talk about moving forward at this point we know that classes will be canceled, and activities canceled for at least foreseeable future. i'm not sure the safe is campus swinging, with a measure how safe gonna feel walk around night. >> talk to me about, that is saying they don't feel safe campus, whether those extended as before tonight, after tonight, taught me more about that. >> they do their jobs, well they take the job seriously. but east lansing is a little bit to see the city, and there's always that risk, but now that there's been a massive violent attack, and they're gonna change the tone of how they treat going out about on campus. >> given that i also want to stress the response of the police, tonight. from other students as well. from other members of the faculty. who said immediately afterwards spread that was evident now from the video that we're seeing. is that the response there of law enforcement, of msu police given the fact that there's such a widespread campus but they're able to do that. so effectively. and securing people and making sure that everybody was sheltering in place. and the areas that need to be evacuated. talk to me about the sense of that kind of security based on what you saw tonight. >> it was pretty insane to see how many people, law enforcement officers showed up, came to head to the situation. there's a lot of frustration about how long was taking. but i think at the end of the day they did a good job letting students know they're safe. that there was someone do something about the issue. there was some presence on campus within seconds. i know some police and fbi agents were there. and they give me help they. so >> that is the most so you can have right now. especially after being so shaken about the events taken tonight. the processing this in the time will take to grasp what happened, and what it means, and the aftermath. and knowing that they're going to be community from the shock and sadness that you all will be feeling once you know more about the circumstances. under the reluctant to share about the identity of the shooter, others that he was found outside campus, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. we do not know the connection to msu. neither do we know the identities of those who have died. andrew miller junior we still appreciate your time and being with us at this time we're trying to process yourself. and sharing your experience. we thank you, and wish you the best of luck. all right, thank you. we are expecting a press conference from michigan state university. and the next ten minutes to update us on the fatal shooting on campus that happened earlier this evening. a little after 8:00. local time. we know that three people have died from the shooting. five people are in the hospital, some with life-threatening injuries, serious injuries. it's happening in two locations on campus at berkeley hall and the adjacent msu union. as you can see here, the podium is they're getting ready to update us again. we are expecting a press conference from michigan state university. and the next ten minutes to update us on the fatal shooting on campus that happened earlier this evening. a little after 8:00. local time. we know that three people have died from the shooting. five people are in the hospital, some with life-threatening injuries, serious injuries. it's happening in two locations on campus at berkeley hall and the adjacent msu union. as you can see here, the podium is they're getting ready to update us again. after an hour of or sense there last press conference. this shooter has been found dead from a self inflicted gunshot wounds. again they were really reluctant to churn other formation because this at the crime scenes still need to be processed. several crimes evening to be processed. they flew to piece together so much before they share any other information to find out exactly what happens when it comes to motive, again, in the connection of the shooter to the msu unity. and for those have died as well. >> as we await this we are all hoping to speak with other members of the community as well. we have heard from them before and many of these people who spoke with us were certainly terrified at the events. but also hopeful and the healing of the community. we will take a quick break at that continue on the other side.
