studies on it. why not just come out and tell the truth? >> let's keep in mind who is being hurt the most. that's the long-term unemployed and young people who can't get jobs because this president refuses to work with the piece of job legislation that more republicans and democrats agree on than any other piece of legislation in the house and the senate. now, take that now to the political. if you are a democrat running -- quite frankly, it is why now you see james carville and stan greenburg saying don't talk about our policies on job creation. >> we just did that. go back to the 1% again. isn't it a risky move for the president, for the senate? you have these very vulnerable democrats who petitioned to get this thing passed. now it is going to be dicey. do you think this helps the democrats or hurts them in the mid-term? >> no question, it hurts them. >> i think it does hurt people like mary landrieu which is why you see her so forcefully throughout attacking the
price before they sign up and before the subsides take effect. i think this system doesn't work. >> paul, are you more confident that when people actually see it working or start to get health insurance for their preexisting conditions, they will actually support it more? >> there is research on this. stan greenburg did a poll for women eeps voices, women's votes and found people that experience a system opposite of what matt is saying. the glitches are horrible and i can't excuse them and shouldn't spin their way out of them. when their mom gets a free mammogram under medicare or their donut hole shrinks to carry their college-aged kid. this is a reason support went up during shut down even though the rollout was bad. when they learn specifics, they say hey, that's good for me. >> that's interesting. the glitches are not to be excused, but what i hear from people over and over again when they go on the website the one

we talk a lot about stress on the right with the tea party movement and the republican establishment. what about tensions on the left? here to talk it over, three very smart democrats, stan greenburg, congressman from minnesota, keith ellison and from new orleans, cnn contributor james carville. i want to pop up a study, the results of a study that show the trouble on the left through the primary season, curtis gans on turnout. the average percentage of citizens who voted in democratic primaries was the lowest ever. the average percentage of citizens who voted in the republican primaries was the highest since 1970. congressman ellison, someone who does grassroots politics when you look at that, 35 states during the primaries and you look ahead 47 days, if that holds up you're in trouble >> it won't. i think it's not going to hold up. things will turn around >> how? >> i'm confident because first we'll hit the ground and talk to people but also we're going to talk about a progressive vision for our country, elections are about what's going to happen,
not about what did happen and if the democrats hold onto the house we are going to put in a bill that will help build this country's infrastructure, continue to make it america a manufacturing drive, working on, we're going to make sure that financial products bureau that -- >> i don't mean to interrupt, if the democrats hold onto the house. your number numbers, stan, tell they're not going to. >> numbers are not great, that's true. well, i mean, the issue, you've got to have a conflict and james, i'm sure will tell you how you get a fight. i mean, the best way i've learned when building turnout is to have a fight about something serious, i think we probably all agree on that. a battle for the middle class versus wall street, democrats got to wage that fight, got to fight for american jobs versus outsourcing. they need a fight. >> james first and then the congressman. stan talks about a fight. and you wanted that fight to be in, i've seen stan's polling
run this campaign based on issues and i think in individual races that's going to matter. >> mary, what do you say about this? >> i'm saying maybe jamal is hearing that but that's not what the voters are hearing. in poll after poll including ones where stan greenburg the democratic pollster and the republican pollster did one and the message was echoed in the 13 big senate races, last month, showing the same thing. the specific republican solutions that jamal is not hearing but voters are clearly hearing are beating in every case democratic positions. furthermore, the democratic pollsters are telling democratic candidates to specifically not run on their records, to not run on obama care. so that doesn't lead them to do anything except attack their opponents and that's not flying either. it's just going to be one of those seismic shifts this fall. >> hold on a second. our cnn political producer shannon travis is joining us on
us. glen bulger used to work for me, does a lot of things with your old partner, stan greenburg. >> but, you know, another part about the tea party is i agree, but they're not bringing new people into the conversation. they're not bringing new people into the table. yet your party, the enthusiasm gap is a problem for us right now. but they're not broadening the republican party. >> i would disagree. they're bringing real outsiders in to some extent. they've also -- they're turning on republicans in their own party, too. they said they've turned the page on obama. they've turned the page on some incumbent republicans too. everybody is feeling the pain from the tea party. the question is how much is felt by the president. >> look at the primaries. where have we seen a huge growth in the primaries? when you look at the democratic primaries from the last time around, there was huge growth. my god, we were missing predictions because we were undercounting the number of people brought into the process. you're not seeing a growth in the primaries because of the tea
