for president. it's the clearest sign yet of his national ambitions. our political experts are here to discuss. jeff zeleny, this move comes during a week when desantis has clearly been on the defensive over his fight with disney, even from within his own party. listen to how some key republicans are talking about this feud. listen. >> i think the governor should sit down with him -- i don't think the idea of building a prison next to a place you bring your family is the best idea. >> i worry if this happens too many times businesses thinking about coming to florida are saying maybe we don't want to go there, because if we get in a firestorm with them politically they're going to come after our business. >> jeff, what's your reaction to that? >> look, this was once sort of an example of strength for the florida governor. i was at his swearing-in just about 3.5 months ago on the steps of the florida capitol, and he talked about there fight with disney. he was using it as a calling card for republican voters across the country as an example of his strength.
controls the florida legislature are designed to sort of mask his travel and not have -- florida famously has some of the most open public records in the country, and this would change that. the reason that this is under way is because donald trump and others have been sort of going after him, pointing out to florida voters and others, voters elsewhere, how much he's been out of the state. in fact, he's out of the state or the country in this case more than he's been in the office in tallahassee. look, this is not going to strengthen a potential presidential bid. this may sort of keep some negative stories away from him. what his focus obviously needs to be, and his advisers know this, is sort of rebooting here before he has an announcement which we believe will be either late may or early june. >> all right. we shall watch. guys, thank you very much. next, the federal reserve releases a scathing report on mismanagement over silicon valley bank before its epic collapse. plus, the fragile cease-fire
cease-fire was violated shows how difficult it will be to get any long-lasting peace in sudan. we believe that there could be thousands still trapped within -- between fighting in the heavily populated areas in parts of khartoum and as well as west end darfur. people are running out of necessities, food, water, medicine. sometimes water and power lines have been bombed, so it's a really dire situation. the u.n. says at least 50,000 people have fled to chad and egypt and ethiopia. it shows no signs of the fighting comes to a close any time soon. >> larry, what are you seeing where you are in jeddah, saudi arabia, where evacuees are arriving from sudan? >> reporter: jeddah is one of the main landing points for people evacuated on the red sea. a key diplomatic player in the country. so far the saudis say they've evacuated about 3,000 people here to jeddah.

and heading into the meeting, kevin mccarthy said his ultimate goal was to try to get joe biden to at least acknowledge that they are going to have to work out some sort of deal with republicans in order to raise the debt ceiling. up to this point, the white house has said they will not negotiate, they want a clean debt ceiling. they point out that republicans raised the debt ceiling multiple times under president trump without conditions. but they need to get to a point where they are agreeing to negotiate so they can start noel negotiating. this is going to be a long process and the stakes couldn't be higher. >> melanie, thank you very much. i want to bring in chief correspondent katelyn collins, david chelian, and jeff zeleny. david, what do you make of what we just heard from the house speaker? he said it's possible there could be a deal between him and the president. >> that's certainly good news for the country to hear, that there is a path forward here.
