>> we would like to get them out of there and freed them certainly if we could rescue them i think that's pretty slim given the situation. why are the hostages there? the hostages -- mike they've never taken hostages on the substantive scale before they took them this time i think it shows all the fingerprints of the iranian regime over this operation. not only did the hamas fighters train at the ir gc training center where they practice their motorized glider operations they also help them how to sync through this operation. the iranians have been taking hostages for 43 years it is their mantra it has not been hamas. they've done it but not on a systematic basis so the hostages are there one to guarantee the preservation of the regime. not to be dismantled. and also certainly to slow down the israelis assault that is taking place because of that and they will trade some hostages likely they will insist on a cease fire. at the end of the day the last hostages they trade they tell the israelis you've got to get out or we are not going to let the hostages go so they have taken these hostages clearly as a leveleverage for their own ade knowing full well the israelis will come after them after the butchery and savagery they imposed again on a civilian population which was a departure from their past military operations which always focused on the idf. they were doing that because they wanted a very violent response this is how diabolical and is sinister this regime is they wanted this violent response they served at the gaza population to take casualties so they would get widespread international condemnation that we see taking place so israel geopolitically would be more isolated and we can politically internally not to speak of breaking down the normalizations with the arabs and the israelis. this is what this is all about strategically as well. it is not just a military operation taking place that's what the implications are as well. >> if i could get a quick answer on this when there tell me i have to go but i want to ask you, do you feel americans should be concerned the u.s. military would be entangled, dragged into conflict in that region again? [laughter] we already are, aren't we? we have been attacked. they are telling us we have been attacked a 48 times since october the 17th. during this administration from the time they took office until the attack on october the seventh we were attacked 83 times. i think we are already there, are we not? team is ahead of the other so what about that opportunity to let the others it's a democracy let the others have their say and see how it plays out at the end of the day because you still have a year to go. >> that is what the republican party has historically said about their primaries. they think they are the more democratic primary process for they look at democrats have unpledged superdelegates and let elites control the process. it is because the gop is pretty democratic in this way that donald trump won and 2016 in the first place and enter this field of 17 different candidates, very hard to distinguish among he had 92% name recognition just starting out. so it was an open field and the most popular well-known person one. it's that very process that is making gop elites and donors really bite their nails because of trump is the weakest of the candidates nationally. haley is pulling better with a biden he is far and away the strongest primary contender and he is very likely to win. however i see why haley is probably holding out until south carolina desantis has a tremendous ground game in iowa so he is waiting to see how that goes. eric: when you state weakest could you describe what you mean could you explain that? >> quick sure, trump times is four times indicted he lost reelection it's very difficult to do that as a sitting president of the united states. twice impeached and after every single one of these sort of big big losing events of her trope, is a polling among moderate republicans at tanks. while gop elites primary voters who feel very strongly and pay very close attention to politics support him, the truth is not the same for swing voters and independent voters who will look at trump not very kindly when you get to a national election. eric: the argument from some of his opponents as he could not be elected in a general election here's ron desantis the governor of florida yesterday and i was saying basically just that. >> i do think trump has been a drag on these races i don't think there's any question about that if you look at in the 2020 election and the key states republicans running for congress actually did better than he did at the top of the tickets in terms of total votes that almost never happens with the democrats are salivating on is being able to run against trump in 2024. eric: what you tell the republican voters who are so strongly behind mr. trump get after the convention he's nominated and may be another story to the general election dealing with all the independence and the other moderates. >> it is a tough argument to make it. they want to choose their preferred candidate and have every right to do so. but desantis makes a very good point it is extraordinary how well democrats have done lately considering the tremendous advantages republicans have. they basically have two big weaknesses in the gop that is abortion as an issue as we have seen in the last two contests and donald trump who is very, very divisive. but on every other issue the economy, immigration, crime, education and especially foreign policy democrats have elected members of congress that are in effect hamas sympathizers, republicans are very strong on these issues and democrats have no business according to republicans doing so well against them but they have got the two weaknesses in
