events from this. >> we have an obligation to make remote better because until we can really decrease community spread throughout the united states, distance learning and distance working is going to be a fact of life. >> schools are not impervious to all that is going on in the outside. they are closing and now because what the city said and frankly what lots of other places are also assaying is a huge skyrocketing increase. >> the bottom line is this. if we had actually listen to doctor redfield and the cdc last may and the former president had not kept on changing his mind and changing these things we would have gotten more schools back in session for chris martha is the best in those reactions. the "new york times" op-ed titled the startling evidence on learning loss is in and it reads in part quote the evidence is in now or the evidence is now and it startling. the school closures it took 50 million children out of classrooms at the start of the pandemic may prove to be the most damaging disruption in the history of american education. it also set student progress in math and reading back by two decades and why did the achievement gap that separates poor and wealthy free will and now also keeping kids out of school prolonged absence and the remote learning. mental health is up if chronic absenteeism up for kids are still not going back as we have math and english scores down, graduation rates are down. they don't actually care there is no urgency for accountability or anything when it comes to this for their given $190 million by congress during covid. beginning of 2023 an average of 50% of that money was used by the schools. only 20% of that money was even allocated for learning loss of our children. you do you know what they did spend $20 million on? they don't take it serious and we have an entire generation of kids who do have the social skills, the academics to become functioning members of society's to be able to earn wages it's not just going to be these kids suffering it's our entire society. shame on them. >> amen. let's take a litt it a little fr into the "new york times" editorial. these challenges have been compounded by an epidemic of absenteeism. the those who missed 10% or more of days in the school you're in absenteeism translate into gaps and learniin learning per charls also this quote that was alarming to me and says this it generation of students will experience diminished lifetime earnings and become significant drag on the economy. and they did this to them the politicians did this to our children. >> absolutely. if you talk to anybody hiring young people today they will tell you that one of the biggest challenges is hiring people are going to come to work. they are so used to -- the bent of the expense of doing school remotely. and as you point out it also leads to all of the obvious pros with testing and stuff. but also an explosion of anxiety and inability to work through problems you learn by navigating the school day as uncomfortable as that may be. there is a point to it. you learn things from it. as you point out all this could have been predicted and was predicted in real time as we went through it. but the most disturbing part of it is what you said about children from poor families are the ones hurt the worst by this. because education is one of the greatest hopes for you. >> sending 20% of healthy children home to learn from an ipad is not acceptable to me pickwick students graduating's not made in the basic benchmarks there's two years of learning loss nobody can
