come back, what to make of the reception donald trump got in south carolina yesterday. >> a very good day to all of you from msnbc world headquarters here in new york. welcome everyone to alex witt reports. as one pm on the east coast, a pm in the middle east, and we begin with the breaking news, the third group of israeli hostages transferred now by hamas in exchange for palestinian prisoners. a list provided of names by the israeli government, 14 israeli and three for national abductees released today. it includes nine cldn. four-year-old american israeli, abigail moore adana is back in israel. president biden is celebrating her release in the last hour. >> she's been through a terrible trauma. her mom was killed in front of her, when her kibbutz was attacked by hamas terrorists on october the 7th. abigail mor edan, who then -- was gunned down as well while using his body to shield a little abigail. >> the four-day truce, which ends tomorrow, calls for the release of at least 50 israelis, with an option for israel to extend this truce by one day for each additional hostage released by hamas. officials are warning that after the truce, the mission will not change. >> abigail remains the same. the dismantling of the hamas military machine, in the end of the rural and gaza. ultimately, that's good for israel, for obvious reasons. it's also good for the people of gaza who deserve better than this regime, this terror rasheem, that's been in the gaza strip for the last 16 years. there is nothing but poverty, punishment, and bloodshed. they deserve better too. >> new video from the israeli government shows prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, on the ground in gaza today. with members of his military, and also, in the last two hours, aid trucks cross the border from egypt into gaza. 200 trucks were expected today, many of them carrying fuel and cooking gas. more, new video shows residents of gaza desperate for the most basic necessities. now converging you see on a truck carrying boxes of drinking water while delight drone footage shows the extent of destruction and neighborhoods that were once home to thousands of palestinians. we have several reporters and analysts in place for you in israel, to washington, with all of this developments. we'll go first to nbc's raf sanchez who's in tel aviv, israel. why, if welcome to you. looking tells about the hostage release? where they are right now, and given this hour, it's just past the pm, is anything more expected today? >> so, alex, as you mention, this is the third night in a row in which we have seen israeli hostages emerging from gaza. in exchange, israel releasing palestinian prisoners in jerusalem, in the occupied west bank. alex, tonight, the choreography was different. most of those hostages, 13 of them, rather than going south through the rafah crossing into egypt, which is what we've seen over the last two nights, they were instead handed over to the red cross in northern gaza, closer to gaza city, and they went straight over the border into israel. from there, one of those hostages, an elderly woman, was flown directly to hospital. she appears to be in serious medical condition. we don't have the details right now. the other 12 hostages continued on to an airbase. now, among those was this little four-year-old israeli american girl, abigail it don. alex, it is worth just pausing for moment on her story. not just because she's an american, but because of what this little child has been through. both of her parents were murdered in the kibbutz on the morning of october 7th. her older siblings hid elsewhere in the house. this little four-year-old walked away from her parents bodies. she went over to a neighbor's house. she hid with them, only for that family to be kidnapped. she has been held in gaza for the seven weeks. officials here in israel in the united states are working to bring her home. she is now safely back inside of israel, but alex, sometime tonight, or in the coming days, someone is going to have to explain to this little girl that both of her parents are dead. that she's an orphan. and that she has a very long road ahead of her to recover from what's gone on these last couple of weeks. we are also expecting, alex, one more israeli citizen who is a dual israeli russian national, to be released alongside three thai workers. they will take that route through the rafah crossing, then back into israel. you mentioned prime minister benjamin netanyahu was on the ground inside of gaza earlier today. we are the third of four days of the cease-fire. right now, if nothing changes, the cease-fire is due to expire at seven a.m. local time on tuesday. you've heard president biden earlier tonight saying that he is optimistic, that there may be a possibility of extending the cease-fire further on this pre-agreed formula. one additional day a cease-fire in exchange for ten more hostages. right now, nothing is clear. and unless the deal is solidified, the fighting will start again on tuesday morning, as promised by the israeli military. now, we can say that there is this one elderly woman who has been flown straight to hospital, but i want to play you a little bit a sound from the doctor who is involved in the treatment of the hostages who emerged last night. take a listen. >> we've received these 12 captives, children, and women. they came back. they underwent a medical evaluation, and evaluation. i'm happy to say that despite the fact that the harsh conditions that they've been under in the experience of captivity, they did not require any emergency medical intervention. >> alex, we spoke last night to the family of ohad -- he is a nine year old boy. he was released on the first night of these hostage exchange. this relative told us that ohad explain to them that when they were in gaza, in the captivity of hamas, they weren't physically abuse, they weren't tortured, but he described incredibly difficult conditions. he said at some point they were going days without food. he said they slept on wooden benches, not beds. like all these other children, he has a long road to recovery ahead of them. alex. >> 100%. as i hearbout the story of abigail, as you accurately discussed, the -- is the family who she got over to you. they had four at thr mily released today. that includes a ten year old, eight-year-old, and four-year-old. god willing, she was kept with them. that would've made it perhaps a little easier. for that mother or father to put their arms around all those children together. very quickly, do you think they were released, this group today, do you think they were released through the north because of the medical necessity of that elderly hostage who had to get to the hospital right away? >> that's our understanding. they wanted to cut out this middle step rather than going through egypt, they wanted to get this older woman over the border, into the hands ofhe israelis as quickly as they could. she was flown directly by helicopter hospital here in israel to be given immediate treatment. we will keep you posted soon as we know anything about her condition. >> which we very much appreciate. thank, you ralph, for all of that. let's go to nbc's allie raffa, joining us in the white house. ali, we just heard from the president, talking about the release of this four-year-old israeli american girl. what else did you have to say? >> yeah, alex, we heard from a very clear relieved president biden, speaking from nantucket before returning to the white house. he is very keenly aware of the continued challenges that lie ahead, as there are more americans awaiting release from hamas and gaza. he talked about, as you, mentioned the first american to be released as a part of this deal. abigail, don she turned four-year-old on friday. the first day of this deal, that allowed for her release. he talked about her experience, held an unthinkable conditions. he says he wishes he was there in israel to hold her after she was released. listen to more of what he said about a pickle, as well as the administration's ongoing efforts to get more americans out. >> abigail was among 13 hostages released today from gaza. under the brokered and sustained u.s. diplomacy. she is now safely in israel. we continue to press, and expect for additional americans will be released as well. we will not stop working until every hostages returned to their loved ones. as i said when i spoke about this on friday, this has been the product of a lot of hard work, weeks the personal engagement for me and my team. we've been in close contact with the leaders of qatar, egypt, israel, and speaking with each of them repeatedly over the past few weeks. this helps secure the steel. we have seen that this is a day by day process. nothing is guaranteed. nothing is taken for granted. the proof of this is working. we will pursue it further. every smile, every grateful to hear we see on the faces of those families who are finally getting back together again. proof is little apple gal. >> the president giving more detail on his personal and direct involvement in the steel, talking about his constant communication with the leaders of qatar, israel, jordan, and egypt. he said he would be speaking with prime minister netanyahu later today. of, course is not lost on this president how incredibly fragile this deal continues to be. you heard him say there, he called, a quote, day by day approach. nothing is guaranteed, nothing is taken for granted. he is assured the families of the americans still being held hostage that he would continue working tirelessly for their release. he was asked for an update on when we could potentially see more americans released by hamas. he said, quote, i don't have anything firmly to tell you at this moment. just saying that he would like to see a pause in fighting as long as prisoners keep coming out of israel. that is something that, as you heard rothman joan, he is pushing clearly for an extension of the cease-fire. national security adviser was asked on the sunday shows what the chances of that could be. saying that israel has laid out its, cars that they are prepared to extend this pause in fighting, but the balls and 's court. >> it is indeed. okay, allie raffa, thank you so much for the white house for that. let's bring in jeremy bash, former chief of staff at the cia and department official in the obama ministration, and david, wrote nbc news senior executive director of national security. david is also a former new york times reporter who, himself, was kidnapped outside of kabul in 2008. he was released after eight months there. gentlemen, it's good to see. but jeremy, for step. this release of the 17 hostages today, certainly not the end of things, so give us your sense of what's happening right now as we approach the schedule today up this truce. where the tensions lie, and what our american intelligence and security officials concerned about most right now? >> well first, alex, let's not forget that nine american hostages remain in custody. omar, her, she keith, judy, and lay hot -- today we got out abigail, as you've been talking about, as well as adrian seagull. she was the elderly woman who had to be flown todical attention because her injuries were serious. so tt individual is actually one ofthe americans who came out today. i think with respect to abigail, first and foremost, i believe she is going to emerge as the and frank of this massacre. by that i mean, she is a symbol of hope. her voice will be heard reverberating around the world. the only difference between this and world war ii is the state of israel exists, she is a home to return to. president biden put it exactly, right which is that the ball is and hamas's court if they want to continue to release prisoners. by the way, they can release all the prisoners today. there are 180 more. they can really set him at any moment. if they continue to release prisoners, there's going to be pause. i just hope that we do not allow hamas, the west does not allow hamas to use this moment to re-arm, regroup, potentially stage another attack against a u.s. ally, killing and cannot be more american citizens. >> one hunted percent. that is the greatest concern of israel. one more question to, you jeremy. that, is in regard to americans that are hostages, does hamas look at them as a sort of leverage? how concerning is it, if that's the case? >> does hamas, yes. i think to some degree they do. although in some respects, the way hamas accused israel is as a client or proxy state of the united states. so to some degree they view all of these hostages in a category of belonging to the united states and our allies. so for that reason, it's very important that the united states, and all of our partners in the region, and continue to work for the release of all of the hostages. i'll just mention that one of the hostages that was released yesterday was a woman who was at a music festival because she had been previously injured, that was at least why she was released. hersh was also an american at the music festival. he had his arm blown off in a grenade attack. he is also grievously wounded. he needs to be prioritized if in fact there is a humanitarian basis to release hostages based on their situation, their injuries, as we saw today and yesterday. >> i'm so glad that you got the specifics out there with the names. there are certain people who need immediate attention. not that they don't all, but to your point. thank you. -- you've talked about this inadvertent to incentivize in of hostages. that it is happening when governments are under tremendous pressure, negotiating for the return of abductees. i have to ask, is there another option? >> i think, yes. the problem, i want to say first of all, is hamas. hamas has causes entire situation with its attack on october 7th, and my own experience, you know, my captivity and other captors of experience since, the person you're most frustrated with us in your own government. it is the kidnappers who caused this. so i agree in the short term situation, you work as hard as you can to get hostages out. there has to be a long term strategy announced by the united states, led by the united states, with europe, japan, world powers, if we could ever get, you know, china to go along with us, to stop this unprecedented outbreak of hostages. both groups by hamas, and by states. evan gershkovich's, a journalist for the wall street journal, he's in jail now thanks to vladimir putin. there are other americans all over the world, five americans recently released a prisoner swap with iran. venezuela had six americans they were recently released as well. it is a broader strategy to just make this behavior, this tactic unacceptable, and increase the penalty to groups in the states that use that. >> i, know, david you've seen hamas that has been releasing video showing the hostages being transferred to the international red cross. there's video from last night's release, showing some of deputies smiling. how do you interpret what these videos report to show. is there a caveat that needs to be attached? >> sure, they are clearly under duress. of course they're going to be smiling and waving to their captors, because they are that close to survival. they are overjoyed right now, all these families are overjoyed. it couldn't be happier for them. any video taken by hostage taker, again, whether it's a government or groove, should have a giant caveat. you are trying to survive as a hostage, and you act as you think they want you to act. >> jeremy, let me ask your assessment of the role that president biden and the negotiators are taking in the crisis. would you think the prospects are for those who have not been free during the stirs? it was suggested earlier, or on jen's aki show, proceeding this one, that it may be awhile. it could be awhile before these men, mostly, will be released. >> i think you can tell from president biden's comments, but, really his comments and his actions, that ever since october 7th, he feels extraordinarily connected to this mission. he believes it is on his shoulders to get the american hostages out, to get the hostages from all 30 nationalities home with their loved ones. he has stood with israel. he has deployed u.s. forces to the region to deter iran. he isn't sure that aid trucks get into the palestinian areas and gaza. he has worked this issue tirelessly, and frankly, he is great at it. i, mean he was built for this moment, he's got a career, a 50 year career of working on hard national problems. he is the best team around. him he's got the secretary blinken, jake sullivan, he's got brett marker. he's got lush or would randall. he's got a team of experts around town that no these issues, no the region, know the players, and they are protecting americas interests in the middle east. >> we are seeing the fruits of his efforts, that's for sure. all, right gentlemen, thank you both for your time on. this i look forward to speaking with you again. an update from the idf on today's relief, when that begins, we'll bring it to you. we're back in 60 seconds. l bring it to you. we're back in 60 seconds >> all right, as if on cue, we'll take you to this iranian spokesperson. this is admirable of the press conference. take a listen. >> the ruthless terror organization, hamas, she is a true hero. she is living proof of the fact that fighting the terror organization, hamas, is an extremely justified one. this is a war in which we face a bad and cruel and in the. just like abigail, all those who have returned have a relative or a family member who has been murdered. and are still being held captive. this is immense pain. irma, who was handed back to us in a dire situation, was taken by helicopter immediately to a hospital where she is now being treated. she was taken by idf forces while still in the gaza strip for medical reasons. in order to maintain the safety of those who have returned, the idf took some of them through the center of the gaza strip in full coordination with egyptian security officials. for foreign nationals, including three thai citizens of one rushes citizen passed to the rafah crossing. after initial assessment, the returning hostages arrived at the air force base. from there, they moved on to the hospitals where their families and loved ones wait for them. this is a very moving day, but we do not forget for one minute all the other hostages who are being held captive for 51 days now by the murderous organization, hamas. they are still in gaza. >> all, right everyone, we are keeping a very close eye and ear on this idf spokesperson. again, admiral david -- who is giving an update. to get a lot of this information from raf sanchez. we're going to keep monitoring that, see if there's more information. we're also following some breaking news out of vermont. that is where three people have been shot in burlington, right near the university of vermont campus. according to the school, in the west bank, all three victims were palestinian and graduates of that school. nbc's investigative correspondent is joining me on the phone with this breaking news. tom, what do we know about the shootingat this point? >> thank, you alex. we just had an updated -- from the chief of the burlington police department. the chief is putting out a lot of new information that i think could probably help us out here to understand the sequence of events. primately 6:25 last night, at north prospects street, that's not far from you dm, justice folks are aware. these three individuals that you were just talking about, all of whom are 20 years old. all of whom are under medical care. to our staple, one has sustained more serious injuries some are described as critical injues. they were apparently shot by an individual who walked up to them, acrdg to police. the individual did not say anything. fi
