key piece of the trumpian republican strategy is to stoke the same lies they pushed in 2020. you would think that after charges were brought against a former president at the federal level and against many of his acolytes in five different states, that they might try a different approach. maybe cut it out. instead, four years later the same old dog is relying on the same old tricks. this time the language is getting darker. listen to how trump talked about the election over the weekend. >> the radical left democrats rigged the presidential election in 2020 and we will not allow them to rake the presidential election in 2024. listen, we don't need votes. we have more votes than anybody has ever had. we need to watch the vote. we need to guard the vote and stop the steal. >> don't worry about voting. just worry about guarding the vote. stopping the steal, his favorite phrase. is daughter-in-law/rnc cochair seemed to go even further. >> we are sending a loud and clear message to anyone who thinks about cheating in an election, if you cheat in an election, we will find you and we will prosecute you to the full extent of the law. >> we will find you. we will track you down. that's not intimidating at all. if it is not clear, there goal is to scare people to prevent people from voting and to spread the falsehood that people are cheating. it mirrors their strategy four years ago when he sowed the seeds of adot and defraud the american people and disenfranchise the majority of voters. as you know, there was no evidence of cheating. there was no steel to be stopped and the only major prosecution said did come out of the 2020 election were trump and his allies who illegally try to overturn the results. now, trump's allies are using a darker version of that very same playbook. here is soon to be incarcerated steve bannon. >> if they steal this election and they fully intend to steal it, this republic ends. are you prepared to fight? are you prepared to give it all? are you prepared to leave it on the battlefield? it is very simple. victory or death. >> are you prepared to fight? it is victory or death. now, for anyone who thinks steve bannon is some crazy old craig shouting into the wind, i would like to point out that trump literally called him, that same guy, on the phone in the middle of a podcast today and he's a predictor of what's going on in trump's mind. before the 2020 election, steve bannon said the trump would say the election was stolen which he did. it's the same story unfolding again. guard the vote. stop the steal. we are coming after you. are you prepared to fight? that's been the message from trump at rallies and fundraisers and conservative media constantly. they are priming the supporters to reject any reality where trump does not win. what makes it more concerning is trump is signaling that if you do something illegal to help me, i will pardon you for it. he has pardoned every january 6 insurrectionist which remains a wild thing to stay -- say out loud. think how extreme something has to be right now to be a bridge too far for people like tom cotton and tim scott. >> you disagree when donald trump says as president he will consider pardoning every one of the january 6 writers. >> he did not say he would. he said consider it. i think what that means, he would take each case on a case- by-case basis. >> anyone know attacks and officer weather on the capitol grounds are in the country should serve time. >> not all the insurrectionist. even tom cotton and tim scott, who both want to be the vice president, will not go that far. apparently neither will be the people advising trump. as the washington post reported, some of ministration alumni planning for second term want trump to limit his political exposure by distancing himself from the most violent offenders. but, i don't think trump will do that because the most important thing to him has been evidenced over and over, is to signal to supporters that if they do something criminal on his behalf, all will be forgiven. stop the steal. get ready to fight. if any of that involves a crime, we have your back. in the same washington post piece, an insurrectionist who is in prison was quoted as saying it's a badge of honor. most of us got caught up in the freight. i would do it again. considering the narrative the trumpian republicans are pushing, their willingness to pardon these people, why wouldn't he? the warning signs are flashing bright red and joe biden is starting to call laid out. continuing to call laid out. here is exclusive video we obtained of the president at a fundraiser over the weekend. >> institutions matter and this president what he did on january 6, what he's saying now, if he said if he does not win, it will be a bloodbath. it is outrageous. >> it is outrageous. hard to argue with that. starting his office democratic congressman adam schiff. it is good to see you. i look forward to talking to you because you know so much is somebody who was on the select committee who investigated january 6 about these events and what led to them. we have talked a lot about this, but i went through some of the language that trump, lara trump, steve bannon, and others have been using in recent days and weeks. it seems they are laying the groundwork for another effort. what do you hear? is it different from what led to 2020 or is it similar in your view? >> it is similar and it's even worse. particularly when you hear steve bannon saying fight or die because trump is doing what he did prior to the last election which is laying the seeds that if he loses that he will challenge it as a legitimate. there is no way he can lose. the thing that donald trump fears more than anything is being labeled a loser. he is probably even more willing to be called a felon than a loser, but he is a loser and he is desperately afraid he may lose again, and if he does lose again, he wants to challenge the results. he is laying the foundation. we saw with even less incendiary rhetoric four years ago that it led to a violent confrontation of a mob descending on the capitol. now that they are escalating the rhetoric, with even greater fears of losing, and added to this for trump, i think he feels if he does not win, he is going to jail. he has all the more reason to contest any losing result. it's more of the same but even more dangerous. >> one of the things we talk about a lot on this show is how much we should be concerned about something. we are not trying to scare something to people. he is trying to whip up ship orders to come to his court appearances and he has not been successful. this language is scary. as you talk to your campaign across california, what are you telling people about the level of concern they should have? >> i am encouraged by the fact, as you say, he encouraged people to rise up if he were prosecuted and they did not rise up. there was not a massive protest. he was convicted and caused barely a stir among his most rapid pace in terms of any public protest. at the same time, you cannot discount the chance that if he loses again, when he loses again, that he will go to even greater lengths to try to overturn the results. wide i do tell people is the worst case scenario is the result is close. instead of a broad victory like we saw by joe biden four years ago where he won't go in numerous battleground states by pretty good margins, let's say it comes to a single state. i really do worry and there is simply no institution we can rely on. i would not want to rely on the supreme court in a close presidential contest any more than we saw in bush v gore. there's little confidence in the court, i think that would be a different catastrophe. the only remedy is the one in all of our hands and that's to make sure that joe biden wins overwhelmingly. that it is not close. that's the best way to avoid any kind of instability postelection. >> one of the challenge you have warned about and others have warned about from the committee is the role of enabler's. trump and mike johnson met today and it was reported that trump called mike johnson to ask for his help in overturning the conviction. that's not our role as far as i understand the rules of the house that it they can play. are their tactics or what could he use if he wanted to, mike johnson, to run interference or tried to have an impact on a conviction done in a state court? >> they are already trying to do the. mike johnson has been trying to do that for some time, acting through the due jesse gary committee for the committee to serve on under jim jordan has been subpoenaing witnesses from the manhattan das office and subpoenaing offices and attacking alvin bragg and holding -- as a committee did with the idea of somehow trying to embarrass alvin bragg. none has been successful but it's a clear effort by johnson through judiciary committee and the oversight committee to do trump's bidding and try to discredit the prosecution. there was no way to overturn it. there are ways we can further cause mischief which i think the speaker is trying to do. you look at trump's continuing influence on telling johnson who to put on the intelligence committee. two of his firebrands on the committee. that is a national security problem and threat. he has already done enough of the present's bidding, the former president, to be of grave concern. >> i was interested in your view on the. it has been reported that not just democrats but republicans who are part of the committee are upset about the naming of congressman scott. and ronnie jackson who were the people you were referencing. talk a little about the impact and the risk of having people like that on the committee who were named reportedly by the speaker of the house and the chairman of the committee was not given a heads up on that. >> it's amazing that down to the micromanaging of who johnson puts on committees, trump is calling the shots. putting someone like scott perry on the committee, as his cell phone records were subpoenaed by the justice department, someone involved in trying to install jeffrey clark, this unqualified person at the justice department and environmental section to install him as trump's attorney general because he thought he would be more useful in overturning the results of the election. someone like that on the committee who is involved already and an ongoing investigation, what it will mean is the intelligence agencies are not going to share the kind of information with the committee as a whole because they cannot trust him. it undermines the oversight role of the committee if agencies are not comfortable sharing with you, sadly though, he will have access to a lot of highly classified written material. there's not much that can be done about that. i am not surprised that even some republican members are unhappy with these choices. i have to think the chair and ranking member the intelligence committee, they are both unhappy about this. it shows the weakness of speaker johnson and the continued dominance of donald trump. >> no question. he asked them reportedly and that's what he did. adam schiff, thank you as always. a convicted criminal who is only out for himself. ♪ i have type 2 diabetes, but i manage it well ♪ ♪
