Crimes with mishandling classified information and obstruction of that investigation. those are serious federal crimes. but there are other individuals in the country over years who have been charged with those crimes. no former president has been charged with this. i think the historical significance is really important. i also want to follow up from something that katelyn and my colleague david aaron were speaking about which is the fact in this case right now the former president is the only defendant. and while i understand that there may be strategic reasons why the special counsel did that in terms of the case potentially being able to move more quickly, i do think from an optics standpoint and from how the public will understand this case it is important that they understand it was a conspiracy of more than one person, a conspiracy under the law requires more than one person. and the fact that we don t yet know who the other named

Courthouse, and katelyn, first to you, what are you hearing is going to happen today? donald trump is going to be brought in close to the time of the arraignment which is expected to be quite a short proceeding where there is not any photos or videos taken of donald trump, but he is going to be observed by a number of people outside of the courthouse, and inside of the courtroom where he is going to be facing charges for the 2020 election actions for the first time. and there are judges here going about their business as usual, and there are other criminal defendants who are having appearances today before judges including a january 6th rioter at his sentencing where he remarks that nothing that happens today will have any bearing on what that sentencing is going to be. it is a mood that the court has so much to do with the january 6 rioters with many of them donald

People like hope hicks, stephen miller who he was on the phone with discussing what he would say on the ellipse and mike peps. take this all together and put it on top of what the special council s office has also been confirmed to be looking at. these state officials they ve talked to across seven battleground states where trump had fake electors and was trying to send people out in different ways or put pressure there. all of that together, john, is quite the investigation. we ll see what s in the charges ultimately, but they have a lot to work with. katelyn, very quickly, if donald trump was given days to appear which no one expects him to do, when would that put the earliest day for a possible indictment? do we even know? would it be friday? that sounds like it could be a possibility. also thursday could be a possibility. we don t know if there is a deadline when he needed to inform the justice department, but yes, we do know that there
And georgia and nevada and a bunch of other states, it s important for viewers and everybody to get into their heads that there are 50 states. some of them are going to overlap. i would think that what jack smith and the special counsel s office are looking into, these are regularities in multiple states. they can all be used to support charges at the federal level. that doesn t mean that they can t independently be charged both in michigan and the federal government. they re two separate sovereigns is the word. you might see some of the same fact patterns emerging in both types of places. katelyn mentioned that trump has until thursday to respond to the target letter, whether he wants to testify or present evidence. would that be a good idea? most people don t. the prosecutors can t compel him to come in. that would be making him testifying against himself, like your miranda rights.
