collapse of the troops. plus, talks of a dead end, no negotiations between israel and hamas this morning with each blaming the other for the breakdown. and the dire warning from former republican congresswoman liz cheney, why she says america is sleep walking into a dictatorship. ♪ good morning, to our viewers in the united states and around the world, i'm kasie hunt. it's monday, december 4th. it's 5:00 a.m. here in washington and it's noon in gaza where the israeli military says they have expanded combat ground operations to the entire territory north and south, following the collapse last week of the truce between israel and hamas. the idf saying this morning it's now hit about 200 hamas targets in gaza from the air. israel now warning civilians to leave large parts of gaza, including neighborhoods in the south. >> we've warned two weeks ahead of time that people in northern gaza need to evacuate towards the south because we're going to operate. you know what unicef said, it's not possible, and all said it's not unicef, people throwing words around like war crimes and other things when we were trying to evacuate people into relative safety. and now we're seeing kind of a repeat of that same practice where we're damned if we do and we're damned if we don't. >> the israeli renewed operations include strikes on th refugee camp. the idf has said they destroyed about 500 tunnels and located 800 tunnel shafts claiming many were located in civilian areas. the israel internal agency shin bet said they're determined to eliminate hamas around the world. he said this is our munich. reporter elliott gotkine has developments and joins us live from london. elliott, good morning. always great to see you. can you help us understand this munich reference and what they mean by that? >> sure, kasie, first to the 1972 olympics, where 19 members of the israeli olympic team were killed by the black september palestinian terrorist group. now, a couple were killed in the initial attack, the rest were killed during a botched rescue effort by the western german authorities. and in the wake of that the prime minister authorized what was called operation god. authorizing to hunt down the black september operatives and masterminds responsible for the attacks wherever they were in the world. now, it was shelved after a year or so after a case of mistaken identity led to israel mistakenly killing an innocent man in norway. but that's ahead of the shin bet, the equivalent of the fbi is getting to. of course, it was made into a steven spielberg film in 2005 based on those events. but that's what they're saying, shin bet will hunt down those responsible for the attacks wherever they are citing gaza, west bank and qatar. particularly mentioning qatar, not because we know that's somewhere some is based because qatar very much involved in negotiations trying to get those 137 hostages that remain in captivity, in the gaza strip, that were abducted during that murderous rampage october 7, they're keen to see them freed. kasie. >> elliott gotkine, thank you for that report. the u.s. militarily say be iran-backed ed houthi rebels launched on thursday including a ballistic missile attack. the yemeni armed forces said they ig fornored a fire from th. ivan watson joins us from southern lebanon. ivan do these skirmishes between the idf and hezbollah widen fears among a wider conflict? >> i think that's a constant concern. whatever red line the israeli and hezbollah have established for this border conflict, that it could escalate. but for now, it does seem to be a bit of an artillery duel across the border. those mountains over here, this is lebanon, and we've been, within the last hour, watching israeli shell strikes in kind of the hills and valleys in the distance there. pufs o puffs of smoke coming up. and it's kind of a constant sound in this region of impacting israeli artillery, thudding in the hills and valleys around here. and something that people have been living with, really, for a month and a half. now hezbollah, has claimed responsibility for a number of strikes across the border in the last 24 hours. the israeli military has said that three israeli soldiers were in fact, as they put it, likely injured and evacuated, after mortar fire in the israeli side of the border. that's one of the area where is the hezbollah militants said that they targeted around 1:00 a.m. local time. hezbollah says that at least three of its fighters were killed on friday and saturday by israeli strikes. there is not -- we don't see the level of the intensity of the violence and the death that we've seen in gaza. which is such a densely populated area. many of the civilians in both the israeli and the lebanese side of the border, in these border communities have evacuated. they have place this can go to, unlike in gaza, where people are fenced in and there's nowhere, literally, they can run to. but one of the consequences, this time, for example, the area predominantly christian, the schools have been closed for more than a month and a half. so you have the teachers who are working as red cross volunteers right now and everybody is really on a war footing. they're living with this reality right now, but, of course, worried that this could blow up into something much bigger. we have not seen the levels of violence that hezbollah and israel were engaged in 2006 which left much of the southern lebanon and southern neighborhoods of beirut in ruins from much more powerful weapons. and israeli air strikes. kasie. >> all right, ivan watson for us in lebanon. thank you very much for that report. right now, no talks under way between israel and hamas in qatar. why negotiations broke down, that's next. plus, liz cheney sounding an alarm about what trump's re-election could mean for the country. and who thought obamacare would be an issue in the 2024 presidential race? what ron desantis and donald trump are promising to do. ♪ welcome back. more than 15,000 palestinians have been killed in gaza since october 7th. and the death toll is expected to rapidly increase with the renewed israeli air strikes and ground operations. a warning, the images you're about to see in this report are disturbing. cnn's ben wedeman has more. >> reporter: look around, this is gaza city's ali baptist hospital. where the wounded are treated in the open on wooden pallets. the emergency ward is already jammed. the courtyard is full of body bags, dozens were killed in a series of israeli strikes saturday, many more still under the rubble. israel claims one of those strikes killed a senior hamas commander who helped plan the 7 october attacks. he was, perhaps, one dead among many, many others. this woman lost her daughter and grandchildren and names them all. [ speaking in a global language ] and may god judge those watching us die, she cries. it's a similar scene in martyrs hospital in central gaza. more wounded. many of them children. many are dead, many of them are children. they bombed an entire street said saud, he pulled his brother muhammad from under the rubble. his brother muhammad was dead. said saud, let me say good-bye to him. my father's been killed cries this boy after a strike on the refugee camp on sunday. the seven-day truce seems like the distant past. ben wedeman, cnn, jerusalem. >> our thanks to ben for that very difficult report. all right. now to the geopolitics here. there are no negotiations between israel and hamas taking place in qatar this morning. israel recalled its team over the weekend after said talks reached a dead end. cnn's bianca nobilo is live for us in london. bianca, good morning. it's always great to see you. what led to the breakdown in these talks? >> great to see you, too, kasie. as you might expect hamas and israel are blaming each other. israel has sent in operatives to act as negotiators in this in qatar. they were withdrawn on saturday because talks reached a dead end, according to israelis. now, we understand that the talks were intended to explore potential new categories of hostages. so the emphasis so far has been on women and children. but there was hope that this could be opened up to men as well. and we also understand, from our sources, that there may have been parameter shifts in what hamas was asking for, in order for any more hostages to be released. israel also blamed hamas, saying that they haven't lived up to their end of the bargain. they say that the women and children promised to be released were not. they supplied hamas with a list of names which had been approved but those hostages haven't been released. hamas had a very different story. they say they have been offered to release hostages also the bodies of those allege to have been killed in israel and refused by israel. and now in a more retractable position because israel said there there be no cease-fire before hostages are released. and so we have the breakdown. >> of course, so what could persuade both sides to come back to the table, at least? >> dexterous diplomacy and pressure from the international community who want to extend, or revive the cease-fire. because they want to get more aid into gaza. this sin creasing concern. we know that's the case from the arab nations, and we've also heard a decisive shift from the white house, and we've heard from kamala harris from the sideline of the cop28 summit in dubai emphasizing again the importance of protecting civilians now that the war has resumed and israel has started its bombardments in gaza once again. pressure from the international community. pressure from the u.s. from israel. of course, if there's any go-between channels that would suggest that there could be movement from either side. israel offering hamas. or hamas offering israel perhaps a little bit of leverage on strategic objectives and goals here but it's going to take a concerted effort for all of those things coming together because right now they're on different pages, kasie. >> indeed they are, bianca nobilo thank you very much for that. we'll see you tomorrow, i home. and just ahead here, snow, snow, snow! where it's happening and where you'll see it next. and there's already a george santntos movie i in the wourks.. what to o expect, nenext.. you're probably not easily persuaded to switch mobile providers for your business. but what if we told you it's possible that comcast business mobile can save you up to 75% a year on your wireless bill versus the big three carriers? >> we take the positive atmospheric river, staring at what happens. it's the result of plume of moisture in the atmosphere, it's just that this one, over the weekend, was cold enough to produce snow in a winter wonderland of leavenworth and lowell. take look at those beautiful christmas lights, absolutely fantastic. of course, that snow trickles down the entire spine of the rockies. and throughout the entire event, we saw impressive snowfall amounts as far as colorado, phenomenal, along the continental divide, 40-plus inches within the past couple of days. this is the first storm system. here's the pacific northwest. here's california and washington. that's the secondary storm system. it's important to note where it's originating from. as it lines up on the pacific northwest, it's got moisture feed all the way from hawaii. this is going to be a significantly warmer system and i'll show you the impacts on that. we do follow the severity of this, this is a level 4 of 5. you can see it's relatively pointed at the coastline of oregon. that's where they'll feel the brunt of the next system. but the whole pacific northwest will feel heavy rain and extreme rainfall. and the majority will see that in terms of altitude. look at the difference, rainfall will fall in the mountains. that will melt the recent snow that's fallen and unfortunately, we have a flood threat across parts of washington and oregon. there's an explainer for the atmospheric river, i hope you enjoyed the video. >> no, i love it. you know what, early december, i'm big into holiday decorations. it's really nice when nature does it in the way that, you know, you certainly can't do yourself. our weatherman derek van dam, see you again, my friend. >> take care. up next, four attacks against commerce vessels in the red sea on sunday with a u.s. destroyer shutting down drones heading in that direction. we'll have details. and an ominous warning about trump from former congresswoman liz cheney. we'll listen to what she h has sasay. ♪ good morning. thanks for getting up early with us, i'm kasie hunt. just a handful of seconds before 5:30 on the east coast. 28:30 in the west. talks of gaza, with talks in israel and hamas collapsed last week. israel is warning civilians to evacuate large areas of gaza. the idf has discovered 500 tunnels and located more than 800 tunnel shafts claiming many were located in civilian areas. secretary of defense lloyd austin has been pushing israel to push harder at avoiding civilian casualties. saying you replace a tactical victory with a defeat. here's senator lindsey graham on cnn's "state of the union." >> i just lost all confidence in this guy. strategic defeat would be inflaming the palestinians. they're already inflamed. they're taught from the time they're born to hate the jews and to kill them. it's like this is a tranquil population only inflamed after israel goes in to defend itself is really naive. this is a radicalized population. >> let's bring re cnn analyst retired colonel cedric leighton. what is your reaction to the senator calls secretary austin naive? >> yeah, he's anything but naive. what secoretary austin was referring to when you look at polling for gaza, before the 7 october response from israel, but what's happening now, of course, because the civilian population is being attacked they're actually literally being driven into the arms of hamas as a way to defend themselves, or at least in their perception. so for graham to say what he said is just factually incorrect. now, senator graham is incorrect to say that textbooks and other education in the gaza strip had very much depicted israel as the enemy. that is certainly true. but there are ways around that. you know, you've got the example of nazi germany being denatsfied after world war ii. and a similar situation where the ideology has been removed. the soviet for example, and it's possible to remove that ideology if the population is given concrete examples of better behavior on the part of perceived enemies. >> very, very difficult, phony conundrum. colonel, let's talk about the military, the u.s. military, in the region. because yesterday, a navy destroyer shot down at least three drones that were headed for it. and they also responded to a distress call from a commerce ship. i mean, this is an incredibly important shipping lane for the world. what's going on here? how dangerous is what happened over the weekend in terms of potentially inflaming a wider conflict? >> yeah. this is certainly a warning sign. kasie, and part of the problem is that, as you mentioned, a lot of commercial shipping goes through this area, it's the strait that connects the red sea to the gulf of aden. that area is full of the traffic that comes out of the suez canal. so there's a lot of commercial traffic between asia and middle east and europe coming through this area. and the fact it's put at risk by the houthis which is the group that controlled a large portion of yemen and is, oh, by the way, supported by iran, that makes it very difficult for commercial ships to go through this area. the "uss carney" the destroyer you mentioned was actively engaged. they had a busy weekend, where they were able to intercept several drones and they also aided at least three commercial vessels in fending off attacks. and luckily, no one was hurt in this situation. but the problem remains that the shipping lanes are now being put at risk. and it could very impact the economies of the middle east, europe and potentially the u.s. because this is a global transport and that will make a potential difference in the way we trade our goods from one area to the other. >> yeah, for sure. in a statement last night, the u.s. centcom, the central command said, and i'll quote, consider all appropriate responses, end quote, to the drone attacks that these ships are coming under. what does that mean? >> well, they are leaving their options open, kasie. what they're trying to do, they're trying to warn the houthis that at this particular point in time, they are putting themselves at risk by sending these attacks against these trips -- these ships. so, you have not only the drone attacks, but as missile attacks coming from yemeni soil. and right now, this would, basically, put us back into about the 2016 time frame, where the u.s. responded by taking out radars that, radar installations controlled by the houthis back then in similar situations of course, this is a much more heightened period in time with the situation in gaza unfolding the way it is. and the houthis have been put on notice and it's very much possible that we'll see radar strikess installation attacks i yemen following these attacks. >> colonel cedric leighton i appreciate your time. >> you bet. an ominous warning from list cheney. the former republican congresswoman telling us that the urs could be sleepwalking. saying she hopes her own party loses its majority in 2024. >> i believe very strongly in those principles and ideals that have defined the republican party. but the republican party of today has made a choice. and they haven't chosen the constitution. and so, i do think it's -- presents a threat if republicans are in the majority in january 2025. >> this is those same house republicans forge ahead with an effort to launch a formal impeachment inquiry into president joe biden. let's bring in grace seger, staff writer at the new republic. grace, great to have you on the show. this, of course, not out of character for liz cheney, but still, a stark warning for her. how much weight do they are words actually carry? >> well, good morning, kasie. i think that is what most noticeable about this very stunning acknowledgement of her americans is how little it will actually matter with her former colleagues. you know, we are a couple of years removed from liz cheney being the conference chair of the republican party in the house. and today, she is persona non grata. her former colleagues do not agree with what she's saying, in fact, she actively dismiss what she is saying. and i think that what is particularly shocking about this announc
