>> dana: thousands of unaccompanied children on the border. >> bill: the white house is saying these migrants when asked the question about it are just responding to a message of hope. >> you think it's a coincidence as soon as trump and his immigration were on the way out and biden and his stated policy were on the way that the historic surge at the border started? >> first of all one of the things i think is important we've seen surges before. surges the end to respond to hope. and there was a significant hope for a more humane policy after four years of pent-up demand. >> bill: that was the answer. more in a moment. former secretary of state mike pompeo about the virus, border, china. first to kristin fisher live from the white house to begin our broadcast today. good morning, kristin. >> that sound bite that you played leading into me was quite significant. there you have president biden's coordinator for the southern border acknowledging that the new administration's policies are contributing to this crush in migrants at the border. here she is again. >> i certainly think that the idea that a more humane policy would be in place may have driven people to make that decision. >> the decision to cross the border illegally. now ambassador jacobson went on to say that surges the end to respond to hope and there is most definitely a surge down at the southern border. look at the new numbers released just yesterday by u.s. customs and border protection for the month of february. turns out cbp encountered more than 100,000 people illegally crossing the u.s./mexico border last month. 28% increase from january. 30,000 of them were unaccompanied children. 3,000 of them were under the age of 12. the cdp official who released the data said the surge is the result of a pandemic, hurricane and violence in central america. republicans blame it entirely on the new administration's policies. >> he is encouraging people to enter our southern border and this is a policy. i know that obama had some silly policies but i think this president has taken it a little bit too far. the american people will be left holding the bag. >> don't president biden will be delivering his very first prime time address to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the shut downs in this country and also likely going to be talking about the passage of his $1.9 trillion covid relief plan which the white house calls the most progressive bill in history but bill, here we are day 50, 50 days into the biden presidency and we have got a prime time address but still no formal news conference. >> bill: we await it. i want to bring in the former secretary of state now joining our conversation, mike pompeo. welcome to our program today. >> thanks, bill. thanks for having me on. >> bill: a few things to run through. the ice arrests, october to february. look at the drop on the screen. thousand a month if you go back to october of last year, 7400, february and now 2300. they've ditched a number of your policies. how is that working out? >> yeah, bill, what it is leading to is a calamity for people being trafficked across the border and american citizens who are here suffering from the drugs that will flow across the border alongside of this. it is tragic for people who want to come into our country lawfully waiting in line while these folks are coming across unlawfully. this is an enormous crisis on our southern border. we had in place a set of policies that were humane, decent, and protected american sovereignty. we sure as heck knew who was coming into our country and we had a set of policies that reduced the flow and the trafficking of these people across the border. these kids would come across with the coyotes preying upon them is tragic. the biden administration's policies have incentivized this to happen and making those people wealthy at the expense of all those trying to make their way north when they think there will be something here for them to improve their lives. >> dana: you mentioned the coyotes. your interactions with the leadership of those countries in central and south america and mexico. in terms of them not being able to do anything to insure rule of law in their country it seems like a lawless situation. the cartels are very powerful and now the coyotes that are bringing the migrants in apparently all of them have been tagged by these cartels coming into our country. not good for the american citizens of course but really not good for those migrants in particular the children. >> dana, what has happened down in central america is tragic. we have had governments that haven't been able to provide for their citizens. so if you're a mother of one of these children or father you can see why they would want to try to find a better life for their people. i'm sympathetic to that. we all are. we did a good work in the trump administration and tried to help people down there, tried to help those governments be more successful. demanded the mexican government not allow traffic flows to continue from guatemala and el salvador and others. not try to transfer the problems to the united states of america. it was the right thing for american sovereignty and american people and regret the biden administration has moved farther than the obama administration did with respect to creating completely open borders. >> bill: ice priorities are lower. agreements with triangle countries and remain in mexico policy has been ditched as well. dana asked the question about smugglers. we associate them with drugs. are they now using human beings as a commodity in their smuggling practices to make money? >> bill, sadly they are. they get paid a handsome price. there is a market for this. they pay a handsome price for trafficking children across the border, they'll bring families across. often the only wealth those families had in terribly difficult situations and these coyotes prey on these individuals. it is not humane to create this false set of incentives for these folks to come across and make this travel across their own country and then across mexico and try to get into the united states of america. we had these policies right. we worked hard. i worked diligently to convince the mexican government to have the asylum seekers remain in mexico. you talked about that pollz. approved by the courts. it was working. now this administration has abandoned it and coyotes will be the primary beneficiaries of this. >> dana: take you to another part of the world. anthony blinken, the secretary of state is announced he will be having some discussions with chinese officials. this is how he sees the relationship going forward at his hearing. take a listen. >> china has an ability militarily, diplomatically, economically, to undermine the international rules-based system that the united states has devoted so much effort to building. we'll be making very clear to our counterparts in china the deep concern, objections we have to some of the things that they're doing. >> dana: let me show you one "wall street journal" headline. the column the wuhan lab theory is a dark cloud on china. w.h.o. to divorce itself from china doesn't help. how important is that when blinken meets with the chinese? what else would you recommend he try to do? >> i'm glad they're meeting. i think that's great. he will meet with them. that's great. i had a number of meetings with them, too. the chinese communist party didn't give an inch. we didn't give an inch and we imposed real cost on the chinese communist party. i hope this administration is prepared to do that, too. secretary blinken ought to make very clear to the chinese communist party we said on this anniversary with the world health organization declared a pandemic. we knew about it. chinese government knew about this weeks and weeks and weeks before one year ago today. they inflicted enormous loss of life in the united states and enormous devastation and wealth creation across the world. still people are suffering from this. i think the united states has a responsibility to make clear to the chinese communist party they must be held accountable. we still don't know the answers to precisely where this virus came from. they know, they need to share it with the world. >> bill: you have talked about this for a year now. final question. how do you think it started and where? >> we know with near certainty this came from wuhan and there is substantial evidence of what was taking place inside of that laboratory. we know secondly there are a set of facts. i released a fact sheet there are certain facts that make it indicative it came out of this laboratory through what was likely an accidental leak. the third pillar the chinese communist party won't let anybody into the lab. they disappear journalists, made doctors who knew what happened go away. that cover-up itself is a crime and the fact that they won't let the world know precisely where this came from when they most assuredly know is a strong indication it came from a place like the lab that they don't want the world to know about. >> bill: thank you for your time and hope you come back soon. many more issues. thanks. >> dana: the pressure is building on governor andrew cuomo with 85 new york lawmakers now calling for the governor to resign. that's after a sixth woman reportedly accuses him of sexual misconduct and warning the allegations you are about to hear are disturbing and might not be suitable for children. bryan llenas is following the story from brooklyn. catch us up this morning. >> good morning. disturbing indeed. the times union reporting that unnamed female staff member part of the executive chamber staff for the governor is specifically alleging that governor cuomo quote aggressively groped her late last year at the governor's executive mansion in albany, new york. cuomo reportedly asked her to come over to help fix his phone, quote, they were alone in cuomo's private residence on the second floor when he closed the door and allegedly reached under her blouse and began to fondle her. the unnamed aide reportedly told cuomo to stop. she alleges sexual harassment or inappropriate behavior against cuomo. this is the most egregious allegation describing a misdemeanor sex crime. cuomo said i have never done this. the latest tally counts 85 new york state lawmakers calling for cuomo's resignation or impeachment. i'm told female democrats are circulating a letter demanding cuomo step down in the wake of this latest allegation. democrats remember control cuomo's destiny. one democratic assemblyly woman tweeted i've had enough. cuomo must be impeached. democratic assemblyman wriengt i believe it is the best interests of our state if lieutenant governor serves as acting governor until the attorney general's investigation or any other potential inquiries reach a conclusion. dana, all eyes are now on the democratic leader assembly speaker carl hasty. will it make him call for cuomo's resignation or impeachment? dana. >> dana: interesting update. thank you, bryan. we'll be in touch. meanwhile vice president kamala harris is ducking a question on governor cuomo. watch this. >> to do what this will do in terms of intergenerational impact, lifting half of america's children out of poverty is a big deal. thank you. >> do you want to comment on governor cuomo? >> dana: the vice president under growing pressure to address the allegations in light of her pointed questions of justice kavanaugh and support for his accuser. >> she is putting herself out there knowing that they'll try tos coreiate her and she is doing it, i believe, because she knows that this is an important matter. she has the courage to come forward. she has nothing to gain. i believe you and i believe many americans across this country believe you. how do you reconcile your statement about a conspiracy against you with the treatment of someone who is before this body not very long ago? let's speak the truth that it was a denial of justice for the women of this country and sexual assault survivors, men and women in this country. let's speak that truth. >> dana: we'll have more on this story coming up. >> bill: president biden first prime time address later tonight at 8:00 eastern time. kristin fisher mentioned this a moment ago marking one year since the pandemic was declared causing widespread lockdowns across america. he will remember the 500,000 victims who have died and praising the nearly $2 trillion bill that he will sign into law on friday. meanwhile we're halfway into the first 100 days and president biden still has not held a solo news conference. dana, to you, used to be your job. when does the ice melt on this idea, do you think? >> dana: they've been very stubborn and said he would have a big signing ceremony and get this prime time speech behind him before he takes questions. i think one of the things i was musing on this morning, because they've waited so long for him to do a press conference, now the build-up to this press conference when he finally gives it they are setting expectations so high. i would have done it differently but who am i? >> bill: i wonder when how many questions he takes in the press conference when it happens. donald trump would take 100 questions in 30 minutes. we all remember barack obama would take nine questions over 60 minutes. we'll see what pace biden goes about this. one thing to keep in mind as we remember one year later, the vaccinations are working. the production levels are shooting through the roof. we're getting better every day and every week and again i will predict in 60 days america will be a very different country. back to dallas in a moment. we talk to white house senior advisor about those comments. dr. marc siegel and where we stand a year about the pandemic. a school in new york asking students to avoid certain words that include mom and dad. now why would that be? that's coming up next. >> can you just let me know is that a racist comment, sir? >> dana: prince william speaking up for the first time since harry and meghan's interview with oprah denying the royal family is racist. retirement is an opportunity to fill each tomorrow with moments that matter. and a steady stream of protected income can help you secure the life you've planned. for more than 150 years, generations have trusted the strength and stability of pacific life with their tomorrows. because life isn't about what tomorrow brings. it's what you do with it. ask a financial professional about pacific life i suffered with psoriasis for so long. i felt gross. people were afraid i was contagious. i was covered from head to toe. i was afraid to show my skin. after i started cosentyx i wasn't covered anymore. four years clear. five years now. i just look and feel better. see me. real people with psoriasis look and feel better with cosentyx. don't use if you're allergic to cosentyx. before starting, get checked for tuberculosis. an increased risk of infections and lowered ability to fight them may occur. tell your doctor about an infection or symptoms, if your inflammatory bowel disease symptoms develop or worsen, or if you've had a vaccine, or plan to. serious allergic reactions may occur. five years is just crazy. see me. learn more at cosentyx.com. it all starts with an invitation... ...to experience lexus. the invitation to lexus sales event. get 0% apr financing on the 2021 rx 350. experience amazing at your lexus dealer. ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete, balanced nutrition for strength and energy. whoo-hoo! great tasting ensure with 9 grams of protein, 27 vitamins and minerals, and nutrients to support immune health. if these beautiful idaho potato recipes are just side dishes, and nutrients to then i'm not a real idaho potato farmer. genuine idaho potatoes not just a side dish anymore. always look for the grown in idaho seal. ♪ and a little bit of chicken fried ♪ ♪ cold beer on a friday night ♪ ♪ a pair of jeans that fit just right ♪ ♪ and the radio up ♪ get 5 boneless wings for $1 with any handcrafted burger. only at applebee's. if you're 55 and up, t-mobile has plans built just for you. get 2 unlimited lines for only $70. and now get netflix on us with your plan. and this rate is fixed, you'll pay exactly $70 total. this month and every month. plus, switch today and get a free smartphone for each line. the best value and award-winning customer service. only at t-mobile. bike shop please hold. bike sales are booming. you need to hire. i need indeed. indeed you do. the moment you sponsor a job on indeed you get a shortlist of quality candidates from our resume database. claim your $75 credit when you post your first job at indeed.com/bike. why choose proven quality sleep from sleep number?
