and what they think must be done to protect muslims and choose here, as well as what they think about what's going on in israel. i've made my positions clear. i want to hear from them. so it's gonna be an interesting conversation, since i have both of them on to express their views. >> this is gonna be good. i'll be watching, rev. take it away. >> thank you. thank you, simone. and good evening, and welcome to politicsnation. tonight's lead, election count down. , election count down >> today marks exactly one year until the 2024 election, a new polling from the new york times paints a grim picture for president biden's reelection prospects. donald trump, the twice impeached, repeatedly indicted former president's pulling ahead of biden in five of six key battleground states. even as he heads back to court tomorrow in his new york fraud trial. i'll talk to biden's -- campaigns, communications director ahead. but first, there's also an election on tuesday, with abortion on the ballot in ohio and several southern governors races up for grabs. the results are certain to be a hot topic at the next republican presidential primary debate, hosted by nbc news wednesday evening. along with the domestic fallout from the israel hamas war in the middle east. the conflict now fueling concerns for the safety of jewish arab and muslim communities in the u.s.. the heads of america's largest jewish and muslim civil rights groups join me tonight. another intense week ahead. another in-depth politicsnation show for you tonight. here we go. joining me now, congresswoman joyce bailey, democrat of ohio, and former chair of the congressional black caucus. congresswoman, we thank you for joining us. let me start with some grim numbers for president biden. exactly one year out from election day 2024. new polling from the new york times and -- finds the president trailing donald trump in a hypothetical matchup in five of six key battleground states. pennsylvania, arizona, georgia, nevada, and michigan. biden underperforms even again eric democrat in those states. what's your response to these numbers? >> i think we're all looking at those numbers, but we know that we still have until next year for the election. it's not surprising. we've seen this historically before, where the president to win, whether that was previous presidents, have had lower numbers at this point, but i'm very confident when you look at the record, the record of what president biden has done, that those numbers will change. we have so many issues right now that the country is faced with. but if you look at what this president has done, and his track record, i am not only very comfortable, but confident that this president will again prevail. >> the poll finds biden standing has fallen across most demographic groups. but especially young people and black and hispanic voters. what do you think is driving those declines, and what can be done about it, congresswoman? >> i think we have to do more in telling our story. the one thing about democrats, we're so used to just look working and getting the job done. i don't think we have done all that we can do to share what he's done. i mean, think about it. we're in a global pandemic, and he got us through it. think about the infrastructure. when we don't time -- tied these things back to the things young folks use all the time. when you think about jobs, when you think about the number of women, and especially black and brown women, that he has appointed to positions, we've done more and housing with secretary marshall fudge. we've done more across the country than any other president for some of the same people who don't realize the benefits. so if there's something we must change, it's telling our story. it's making them understand when we look at what we're accomplishing, whether it's in housing or education or the economy. we have to do a better job, because we have a track record that i will stand up against anyone's track record, and especially those republicans who are running for election. >> we've been talking about 2024, but there is an election in two days, and it's critically important. voters in your state of ohio will be deciding on a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive rights. republican lawmakers have been trying every trick in the book to defeat this initiative. they even change the language on the ballot, replacing the term fetus with the where it unborn child. >> yes. >> are you confident ohioans will turn out insufficient numbers to ensure this motion passes successfully? >> let me tell you, i've been home today. i voted early. our numbers are good, better than i had anticipated in an off year presidential election. we know what's at stake. and when you talk about what it's doing to women's reproductive rights, what the state of ohio, especially, those in the majority, my republican colleagues, it's awful what they're trying to do. setting us back more than 110 years. we fought too hard for this. i can tell you we understand their tricky language and what it's doing to reproductive rights for women. whether you're seeking an abortion because of rape or incest, or the mother's life at jeopardy. that's not for politicians to decide. that's a choice that we should have within our own women's rights. so women are coming out and encouraging people to come out and vote, because our voice is our power. we were very successful in the last election when republicans tried to be tricky again and change the language to make us need more than 50% or a majority to make a constitutional change. this was directed exactly at what we're facing now. directed at women's reproductive rights and our choice. >> the new republican speaker, mike johnson, was on fox news this morning defending his stand-alone bill tying israel aid to cuts in the irs. he also stood by his financial disclosures, which according to the daily beast, do not list a signal -- single bank account or asset going back seven years. and you are view, is speaker mike johnson a leader democrats can trust to work with an important issues like military aid or spending? after all, we have another government shutdown looming in less than two weeks. >> here's what i know. we don't know a lot about him, but what we do know means we'd better keep one eye open, and when i close. because he can be very dangerous. when you look at -- funding, i think it's very dangerous to have an offset, or to say we're gonna give monies here for humanitarian reasons to israel, for example. but what will happen, what he's trying to do is not only make cuts with the irs. he'll put them in a very dangerous position to always happen offset. when you have emergencies and you need the dollars like we need now for israel, you don't want to put a hawk -- hook in it that you get these dollars if you do this. i think that's a very dangerous position for the american people. another reason you need to vote. when someone doesn't reveal their tax records, i believe it means you have something to hide. i think that tells you what i think about the speaker. one eye open, when i closed. >> all right. thank you, congresswoman joyce beatty. let's shift now to the war between israel and hamas and the political and social fallout here in the u.s.. later in the show, i'll talk to the executive director of the council of american islamic relations, but first, joining me now is anti-defamation league president jonathan greenblatt. thank you for joining me today. jonathan, the fbi has a new warning about what they say is a heightened threat of hamas inspired terror attacks the u.s.. the organization put out a report last week documenting a 400% increase in antisemitic incidents in the past month. can you talk about the situation you're seeing on the ground right now? >> thank you for having me, rev. sure. we've never seen a moment like this since the atl was founded. we've seen -- i shouldn't call it a wave. it's more like a tsunami of antisemitic attacks. vandalism, violence targeting jewish americans. i want to be clear. not israelis. although that would be wrong. not, you know, people in idf uniforms, although that would be wrong, rev. we're talking about, quote unquote, the zionist businesses. how ridiculous is that? >> but a café owned by a jewish family on long island, and ice cream parlor owned by jewish people in san francisco. a restaurant owned by jewish people in the midwest. being tagged, being vandalized, being desecrated. it's inexcusable, and on our college campuses, it is off the charts. jewish kids getting targeted and victimized, getting bullied and harassed and assaulted at harvard, at columbia, at many other universities across the country. >> let me stop you right there. let me start right there. i know cornell university canceled classes friday after junior engineering student was -- for alleged antisemitic threats. -- across the country cing calls from lawmakers and religious leaders to combat antisemitism on campus. and i'll be talking about islamophobia as well. there's been an increase. but let me ask you, what concrete actions would you like to see these institutions take to protect jewish students while also respecting free speech? because that's where the problem comes in. >> well, it shouldn't be a problem. making death threats against jewish students, to rape tuition women, and slit the throats of jewish men's happening at cornell. that isn't free speech, that's a crime. rev, we need to move from cancel culture, for perceived microaggressions, to consequence culture. when you threatened someone or intimidate someone, that should not be allowed in a workplace, on a college campus, anywhere. so what are concrete steps? number one, programs need to address racism and seeing a phobia and antisemitism. there's no excuse for a college not to address antisemitism. by the way, an anti zionist summit -- antisemitism, as well as classic anti-summit chisholm. it's all the same. >> go to number two, and i'm asking my next question. >> to, these student organizations that are taking cues from hamas, unknown terror organization, look, you're not allowed to promote i.s.i.s.. you're not allowed to give material support to al-qaeda. you shouldn't do it for hamas. hamas has the blood on its hands of the dozens of americans who were killed on october the 7th. the scores of americans who are kept and kidnapped, bound and gagged in tunnels right now under gaza. this isn't just aguero against the jews, although for hamas that is. it's also a war against america, rev. and that's wrong by any definition. >> biden administration has laid out a new national strategy to combat islamophobia. arab americans support for biden has plummeted 42 points since the last election, down to just 17% in a new poll released by the arab american institute. you've been a strong advocate for the jewish community. but you also work with the leaders of different faiths, such as myself and others, to take a stand against hate. what are the areas, if any, of common ground right now? >> look, in 2016, when president trump talked about a muslim registry, i stood up -- i'll be the first to register as a muslim if he does that. because that was wrong. and i've consistently spoken out against islamophobia, anti-muslim hate, including that young muslim child who was killed in plain view in him illinois last week. absolutely wrong. i stand up against anti muslim hate, drive, because it's the right thing to do. but we need the muslim community, including our next guest, to speak out against all forms of antisemitism as well. i'm glad the administration is gonna come up with a plan, but we need them to implement the antisemitism chat strategy, because of, a world in which people are targeted and persecuted because of how they pray, right? or who they worship, is wrong, and right now, the anti zionist, antisemitism, going after jewish kids, making them unsafe in the places where they study, the shops where they work, there is no excuse. and i will -- >> let me push you on that. let me follow up on that. our israeli friends in -- gaza appears to be intensifying. this will likely became a part of our political reality for the foreseeable future. what kind of steps will your organization take to get a positive dialogue and ensure attitudes and hearts do not harden as this drags on? just like i was outraged on october 7th in calling you on television, saying that you cannot use innocent civilians, jews for collaborative damage. i'm also -- i find it deplorable what is going on with children in gaza. let me finish. president obama, former president obama, you worked in the obama administration. he has said, what about what has gone on in gaza? what is going on? we cannot have a sliding morality. if we are against civilians that we killed in israel, we should also be against his a billions being killed in gaza. >> correct, and the president, my former boss, he's entitled to academic musings on a podcast. right, now we need moral clarity in the real world. thank god joe biden is our president. to your question, this war was initiated, rev, by hamas. people were butchered and murdered in israel by hamas. hamas has hiding behind human shields. gaza is an open air prison, and hamas is the warden. here's what i would say, and keep this in mind, ask your next guest. this could end tomorrow if hamas returned the hostages, if hamas said we will lay down our arms and negotiated peace deal with israel. reverent, this would end like that if they would simply do the right thing. >> what about those -- what about those that have asked for a cease-fire, or even the biden administration saying a humanitarian pause? if hamas -- and i'll ask my next guest. if he won't do something, netanyahu is saying no to biden. he's bearing down. where do we try to stop innocent people from being killed in gaza? children. >> if hamas would say we will return in the hostage is, i don't think there is any world in which holding elderly people hostage, holding disabled people, holding infants and children hostage. if they return the hostages, this would end. i believe in a cease fire after hamas makes the commitment to return the hostages. by the way, imagine this for a minute. imagine if americans were taken hostage in mexico. do you think america would hold back? you think they would wait and work it out? america would say that any country on planet earth who would say, give us back our children. give us back our elderly. give us back our people. in black churches across america, they say let my people go. the jewish people, the story of exodus, let my people go. to hamas, i say reverend, you hear this loud and clear. let my people go. >> all right, i will raise some similar questions. i am having very serious concerns on both sides. thank you for being with us as always, jonathan greenblatt. we will keep fighting in the united states. coming up, election day is tuesday. do you know it's on the ballot in your community? stakes are high or then you think. i will explain why. president biden is gearing up for a tight 24 race, facing some significant challenges including the voters of color. and then their concerns, the campaign's communication director will join us tonight for a candid conversation that you don't want to miss. we'll be right back, with one more politicsnation. politicsnation. - [speaker] at first, just leaving the house was hard. - [speaker] but wounded warrior project helps you realize it's possible to get out there - [speaker] to feel sense of camaraderie again. - [speaker] to find the tools to live life better. - [narrator] through generous community support, we've connected warriors and their families with no cost physical and mental health services, legislative advocacy, career assistance, and life skill training for 20 years, and we are just getting started. the power goes out and we still have wifi to do our homework. and that's a good thing?
