to listen and watch what former president trump told our kaitlyn collins at cnn's recent town hall. >> when it comes to your documents, did you ever show those classified documents to anyone? >> not really. i would have the right to. by the way -- >> what do you mean not really? >> not that i can think of. >> let me get your thoughts on that. that doesn't seem to line up or does it line up with what you're reporting? it seems to line up. >> i didn't hear a no there, did you? >> no. >> not really. not that i recall, but i would have the right to do that. i mean, that was a very interesting answer and what federal prosecutors have learned from other witnesses is that he did show classified documents and that he did keep some out in his office so his answer to kaitlin there was non-committal. there might be reason for that. >> laura, what does that say about where the special counsel, jack smith's, criminal investigation stands?

to me when i was in the courthouse. just that it wasn't that hard to get into the courthouse. at one point, i thought i was late. i went to the media overflow room. there was nobody there because there was plenty of seats left. yeah, i think part of that is that people didn't want, they thought they knew everything that there was to know about that story, the stories that we heard in the trial, mostly stories we've heard before. but again, i think there is real nuance here because i think trump did lose some of his power. certainly his agenda setting power when he lost the twitter account. when he lost his reach on social media. right, it does matter. it's not the totality of where he gets his political power from. >> this is the quote, this is you don't have to like the former presidents answers but you can't say you get, them kaitlin pressed him again, made news, a lot of news, that is our job. --

>> so not committing to accepting the 2020 election results or acknowledging what happened in 2020. president trump i want to thank you for coming here tonight. this is an important conversation with voters to here and to have. thank you to our audience into our house. cnn's coverage continues with anderson cooper next. >> okay, thank you, thank you very much. thank you very much kaitlin. thank you very much [applause] [crowd chanting] i like you guys. we love new hampshire! thank you, good luck. >> in manchester new hampshire. tonight cnn town hall moderated by kaitlan collins. but first, the 2024 presidential campaign is now in the books. >> from washington, it was an interesting night. mr. trump's first ally was --

washington. >> all right, anderson, we're back with the panel. you know, one of the, we talked about the abortion issue, which is of immense consequence to voters here in the united states. an issue that is of immense consequence of people over the world has to do with our position, the united states government position on ukraine. and donald trump, he loves to brag about his good relationship with vladimir putin of russia. the questions have been asked about what donald trump would do were he to be elected president again, in terms of support for the war in ukraine. and kaitlin try to get some answers from him. take a listen. >> do you want ukraine or russia to win this war? >> i want everybody to stop dying. they are dying. russians and ukrainians, i want them to stop dying. i don't have that done, all have that done in 24 hours. all have it done. you need the power of the presidency to do it. >> but you won't say you want

election rigging. should they be trusted because they're trump appointed? or are they rigged too? >> every candidate that runs for office, i ran for office, you are allowed to contest an election. we all have that ability. you have the ability to go to court and do that. >> he's had the ability to do it. right now, he was making a statement, very clearly, about how he still feels about the 2020 election. but he's also looking forward respectively. the point i'm making is, kaitlin did not want to do that. she wanted to hang in and continue to talk about the 2020 election. she got the answers she wanted -- to be very clear on that. >> listen, i want to say on caitlin's behalf, she did a masterful job of fact checking a lie machine in realtime, in front of millions of people. it is very, very difficult to do what she did. nobody's gonna do it perfectly. but it is incredibly difficult to talk to somebody who's gonna say things, sometimes that are true, sometimes that are not true. i don't think anybody here thinks that donald trump is a paradigm of truth telling.

and kaitlin pushed him on the fact that the evidence does not support what he said, on the fact that many of his own former attorneys, former aides, have now said that. and he is not letting it go. and that is something that was very much on display for the entire country and the entire world to see. >> and as usual, with trump, i mean, this is a person who so steeped in his own conspiracy theories, it's hard to know whether he can even see his way out of them. i mean, being confronted time after time with just playing facts about the fact that his campaign asked for recounts that they found no election fraud, even going into january 6th, i mean, really, if you are steeped in the conspiracy theories around this stuff, you would still probably need a map to get around what he said tonight. and i think that is an

prevention. the vast majority of abortions take place at or before 13 weeks. >> trump claimed tonight that he had every right to keep classified documents that he took from the white house after he left the presidency. this is obviously a source of contention. there is a special counsel investigation going on right now about those documents. he said that he had the right to do it because from the presidential records act, kaitlin pointed out that's a false claim, what he was saying was not true. what else did he have to say? >> that's right. trump also claimed he was negotiating to return these documents, then surprise, the fbi just shows up to search mar-a-lago. let's hear donald trump's misleading version of events. >> i was negotiating, and we were talking to nara, that's washington, to bring whatever they want. they can have whatever they want. when we left washington, we had the boxes lined up on the sidewalk outside for everybody, people taking pictures of them, everybody knew we were taking

trump, are more likely to believe he made unwanted sexual advances, i do think it could cost trump in the polls. obviously, we'll have to wait and see. but the fact is, this is just something we really have not really encountered before in american political history. so i'm just not quite sure how useful the polls necessarily are. we'll have to wait and see what happens going forward. >> appreciate it, thanks. joining the panel is cnn senior legal analyst and former prosecutor elie honig, as well as scott jennings. was there anything the president said tonight that investigators are going to be listening to closely? >> absolutely. so everything that donald trump said tonight, everything that he has said and will say publicly, is fair game for prosecutors. i assure you, they were watching and taking notes. i'll tell you two specific moments that jumped out to me as potentially usable evidence by prosecutors. first of all, in relation to january 6th, there was a moment when kaitlin asked him about his followers. she said, they listen to you,
