story. " i'll see you next sunday. . hello and welcome, everyone, i'm michael holmes. appreciate the company, and it's midnight here in atlanta, 37:00 a.m. in and list of hostages that hamas is prepared to release on saturday and has notified their families. according to an israeli source, several children are on saturday's list. day one of the truce that hamas released 24 people who had been held hostage since october 7th. 13 of them were israelis, 11 were foreign nationals, all of them were taken to several tel aviv hospitals for medical evaluations. among the non-israelis were 10 thai citizens and one filipino who spent the night in the same medical center near tel aviv and they cautioned that the process is far from over. >> translator: the site of those that have safely crossed the border into israel provokes a profound sense of relief, yet our hearts remain with the hostages still held in gaza. tonight, we embrace the family of the hostages keeping them constantly in our thoughts. it is our moral obligation to ensure a safe return of everyone home. we are only at the beginning of the process. we are preparing to continue implementing the plan for the return of the abductees. the days ahead will present complexities. of nothing is certain until it is accomplished. we must be prepared. as part of the deal, 39 palestinian women and children were released from three israeli prisons and returned to the occupied west bank and jerusalem. cnn's scott mclain joins me live now from istanbul, scott, first of all, just tell us more how the day unfolded. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. yeah, so look it's been almost exactly 24 hours since the pause in fighting began. it wasn't until nine excruciating hours later that the actual handoff of the hostages began in gaza, and the prisoners began in the west bank or in israel to be taken back to their communities in the west bank. now of the 13 israeli citizens who were released, all but one were from kibbutz, a place where nearly a quarter of the community either went missing or was abducted or was murdered after that horrific terror attack on october the 7th. the oldest hostage released yesterday, 85 years old. the youngest was just two. now hamas released their part of this hostage handover in a video that was edited. cnn had no control over the content of how that video was edited or what it showed, and obviously, hamas is showing the world exactly what it wants them to see, so take this with a bit of a grain of salt, but i want to walk you through this video and it shows hamas fighters with the unmistakable green head bands directing hostages from a van to a truck to red cross vehicle and it shows the red cross staff helping elderly people into their vehicles. it also shows a boy that we can only assume is nine-year-old ohad munder, wear a spiderman hat and the hamas have their arms around him and he's lifted into the red cross vehicle, and in another vehicle, you can see the hamas fighter carrying one of the hostages into these vehicles. there are also people taping on their phones, some of them cheering, as well, and there's plenty to cheer about at least from their point of view. hamas has very few cards to play in this war and certainly these hostages is where they have any leverage. this was brokered by the u.s., eygpt, israel and of course hamas. this was implemented by the red cross saying this was complex and pressure to get it just right. listen. >> sometimes it looks like it's just driving people from one place to another, but it's about and agreeing on when, how, what and all this needs to be coordinated with different movement outside gaza. >> so the hostages from gaza were first taken through eygpt and driven back to israel where they were taken to various hospitals by helicopter and one place where the helicopter landed in tel aviv, the hostages were offloaded into ambulances, and as those ambulances went by, people were cheering and clapping and one piece of evidence just how emotional this handoff is and the days are on both sides of the conflict and of course for the hostages themselves and their families they're being reunited are with, as well. scott mclain in istanbul, thanks so much. what lies ahead for the newly freed hostages, let's talk about that and we're joined from tel aviv with an expert in traumatic bereavement. thank you so much. i think most people are familiar with the term post traumatic syndrome, but how might that apply to these people? >> well, this is a very complicated trauma, because usually we have an event, but here it's a complicated event because the hostages were beforehand under many hours of shooting, then most of them, their houses were burned down, and that's why they sneaked out and caught by hamas and several of them saw their family members butchered, so this is a very complicated trauma, and also when they come out, they don't have a home to come back to, so that's why we need to take care of them immediately. that's what we do with post traumatic stress disorder, we take care immediately because the first days are crucial, and we know that they will have symptoms, but we pray that they will not have post traumatic stress disorder, which is a very severe disorder. >> israeli media was saying the welfare ministry put out guidelines for treatment of the hostages including those that saw them first, saying things like quote, hostages may not want to be touched or may be sensitive to specific sounds assuming they've been held underground for several weeks. sunlight might be uncomfortable for them, very specific things. what are the psychological considerations for people who have gone through something like that, particularly in the first days? >> yes, well, we don't actually have experience with two-year-olds and four-year-olds, for instance, razahabib but more with soldiers. we do know that you need to be very specific -- it's very particular with each individual, and you have to give them their control back, their agency. so you need to ask them because they lost control for six weeks. they were probably in the darkness and in extreme stress but completely passive, and incompetent in dealing with the situation, so you give them in everything their control ask their aggression, the accident agency ask it okay to walk with you and take your hand, and you want them to regain control and their sense of agency and to regain their sense of competence from the very first moment. >> yeah, yeah, and you touched on this, and i think it's important. on top of the trauma of /koeupt, most captive captivity you -- >> i was accompanying two girls that the red cross offered to write letters to the families, and they have a mother and sister kidnapped. and they wrote a letter, what can we do when we cannot find their father. they don't know what happened to them, but many will find out this their family members are not alive. some members are left behind, the hostages are like families, and it's very complicated to be happy with those who come out, but their own family members are still kept hostage, so yeah, it's very complicated. >> how lasting the impacts or how lasting can the impacts of something like that be, and what sorts of resources are going to be needed going forward presumably potentially for years? >> yes, absolutely for years. it's a very long-lasting bereavement, a very complicated bereavement, so they will have to be taken care of with therapy for many, many years and be very well taken care of, and they will have symptoms for the rest of her lives, although, i also count on the life instinct and the resilience, which is also there and they'll be wrapped with a lot of love and care, so i hope the strength will be with them to adjust. >> yeah. mira rothman from tel aviv. thank you for making the time in your morning. appreciate it. >> thank you. now the united nations said harley-davidson was offloaded in gaza tonight first day of the truce, the largest envoy since the october 7th attack on israel. the u.n. humanitarian affairs officer says 129,000 litres of fuel and cooking oil was brought and food and other medical supplies will help the hundreds and thousands of people in gaza who so desperately need it. still to come on the program, israel's release of 39 palestinian prisoners prompted mixed emotions for many palestinians, joy at their freedom yet mourning the toll of the war in gaza. we'll have reaction from the west bank when we come back. /á. 39 palestinians are free now after being released from israeli prisons on friday as part of the hostage agreement with hamas. they returned to their homes and families with hugs and celebrations in the west bank in jerusalem, but for some, the joy of their freedom tempered by the suffering in gaza. cnn's nada beshear reports. >> reporter: a joyous celebration as 23-year-old malak finally arrives home in east jerusalem after six years in an israeli prison convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison as the age of 17 for attempted murder. police say they found a knife in her possession in the old city of jerusalem, a charge she and her family have long denied. she is one of the 39 prisoners all women and minors released from israel on friday in exchange of hostages held by hamas in gaza. >> with so many of those released, the prisoners being carried on people's soldiers to the building where a number of the family members were waiting among the 15 minors released carried up this road on people's shoulders and cheering and celebration and even fireworks set off. we've also been speaking to people, including relatives that say they didn't want to see these crowds. >> this celebration is not necessary. of they need to be mindful of us in gaza. this celebration is wrong. i am torn to pieces. have a little mercy on us. they can be joyful, but the joy is in the heart, because we are dying in gaza. have some respect for us a little. >> reporter: the release of this first group of palestinian prisoners comes as israel and hamas begin a four-day truce. a window of desperately needed respite for civilians in gaza and nearly 15,000 palestinians in the enclave have been killed in the last seven weeks alone. israel says it is taunting hamas in response to the terrorist attack on october 7th that killed more than 1,200 israelis. more than 3 /thoáu,000 palestinians are in israeli jails and the prisoners held under the ministry of detention meaning no clear charges and no clear legal process. but for those gathered in the occupied west bank on friday night, this is a welcome moment of, in their eyes, long overdue justice. >> people want to be together in this moment, and however folks internalize that in terms of their own reaction to it, that's for them to speak to, but i think people want to be here to be together to welcome home these prisoners, and that's part of the spirit of being palestinian. >> reporter: with over a hundred palestinian prisoners to be released over the next few days, scenes like this are expected to continue. though, some say at too high a price. nada beshear, cnn in jerusalem. now, for more on the palestinian prisoners, let's bring in omar that tear, the israel and palestine director and thanks for making time. israel, of course, let's talk about, this practices what they call administrative detention where palestinians, including children can be locked up for months or longer without charge let alone conviction, and a vast majority released today appear to have been in that category, detained or not charged or not convicted. could this prisoner really shine a spotlight on administrative detention of palestinians, which has been an issue for them for many years? >> more than 56 years, israeli authorities have been holding palestinians in a form of detention as you noted without trial or charge based on secret information, international humanitarian law allows this form of detention as a temporary anticipation and more than 2,000 palestinians as of november 1st reporting israeli and virtually almost all list, no jewish israelis are held in this way. imagine that situation, you're held and you don't know what basis, you don't have a forum to contest it, and this administrative detention is simply unlawful, and so hopefully this conversation can focus on these sorts of abuses which is endemic to israel's occupation. >> to give us the bredth of the situation, do we know how many palestinians are in detention without trial, charge or conviction? >> of course. obtain bid the israeli human rights groups, there were 270 palestinians on november 1st held in is this detention separate from the thousands of laborers from gaza whose work permits were revoked and dedetained after october 7th and that is separate from some of the fighters detained. some 270 palestinians from the occupied territory held in this draconian form of detention, again, without trial or charge based on secret information. >> so is it true as many palestinians claim with some of these cases, they're not even really told why they're being held, and how long does it go on for? >> absolutely. so the insidious thing about this form of detention are there are renewable orders, and in many cases, they are renewed every there's months, six months and there are human rights defenders held in the ministry of detention and palestinian political figures a core part of this and the information of their detention is absolutely secret. sometimes they're given a few words of the general basis but none of the underlying information, and this has been going on year after year for decades. >> and how young are we talking about? because i was going through the list of the palestinians released today -- all of them, and the children, those under 18 and the women, as well. there were a handful who had been charged, convicted and serving terms. the vast majority had not. does that surprise you, because certainly there have been israeli spokespeople in the media saying they're releasing terrorists, is that the case from what you've seen of the list? >> look, i think it's important to understand the nature of the israeli military court system. the conviction rate is nearly 100% according to government data, so even in cases where you have people who have been, you know, convicted or accepted a plea bargain, they often do because they have severe process of rights violation and the kids are taken at nighttime and the majority of the kids are roughed up during their nighttime arrests and often night access having their parents in the courtroom which is a right you have, and they agree to plea deals to avoid prolonged mistreatment, so you have to take these convictions in a system where there is no due process for palestinians, and we have documented these cases and document them and we can't generalize it for every case but as a general rule of thumb, this is a system ripe with serious abuse, torture, mistreatment and miscarriage of justice. >> so what happens when groups like yours, the human rights watch complains about it or perhaps protests to the israeli system about administrative detention particularly when it is involving children and the accusations is something like that throwing stones or whatever. what happens when it's raised with israeli? >> with the administrative dedetention, the israeli government takes this narrow loophole that allows it as a temporary acceptable measure and justifies the withholding of palestinians and 1,400 complaints have been filed with the israeli justice system since 2001 by israeli human rights groups and three of those led to investigations and zero led to indictment. the numbers have only increased over the years, and we continue to see palestinians, thousands of them being held. you have to understand the effect on society. once a study has shown that 40% of male palestinians men and boys have experienced being detained, so you have virtually every family that has had somebody go through? unjust system or know somebody. >> all right. thank you so much. we really appreciate it. >> thank you. >> and thank you for watching cnn for our international viewers.
