in the end, a win would not have been enough because croatia managed to get the victory they needed to progress through to the finals. for the fans, deep disappointment but all hope is not lost. they still have the play—offs to look forward to. i was a bit disappointed. i think we deserved it. i really think we deserved it. but, oh well. how hopeful are you wales can reach another major tournament via the play—offs? very hopeful. got ourselves to blame. we could have qualified earlier in the competition. we didn't. relied on this result which did not go our way. really disappointing, really disappointing. | but i think they played well . but they had a lot of chances. unfortunately it did not turn out very well for them - in the end. but here we are. wales could not have dreamt of a better start. nico williams gave wales the lead in the opening few minutes. cardiff city stadium buzzing. that noise dampened down a little bit while news filtered through of croatia taking the lead. but wales kept creating chances. they were seemingly in control until a penalty was awarded to turkiye. it seemed a harsh decision and they made no mistake from the penalty box, equalising 1—1 the final score. wales will have a second chance via the play—offs. potentially two matches in march. they will find out which opposition exactly when the draw takes place on thursday. so in the end, a draw in cardiff meant that croatia's result against armenia was irrelevant — but they did what they had to do. they won 1—0 in zagreb against armenia. ante budimir with the only goal to secure the win which means croatia continue their record of qualifying for every european championship since 2004 and every major tournament since 2010. so not to be for wales then, who have a wait to find out their destiny. this is how the group finishes. croatia in the end comfortably taking the second automatic spot. they finish four points ahead of wales and just a point off group winners turkey. it means wales now have to secure a spot via the playoff route, the first of those games taking place in march next year. elsewhere, there was one other group matter to be decided, as first played second in group i. romania came out on top, beating switzerland 1—0 to win the group. while in group b, france's perfect record came to an end in theirfinal qualifier as they drew 2—2 with greece. netherlands, who finish as runners up behind france, beat gibraltar 6—0. meanwhile, there was an emotional night in world cup qualifying as palestine were supported by more than 1a,000 people for their match against australia in kuwait. the match was palestine*s second since the start of the israel—gaza conflict. they did lose 1—0. harry souter with the only goal for australia who are top of their group after successive wins. palestine are third. there's been a huge boost for sarina wiegman and her latest england squad announcement. after suffering an acl and being out for a year, striker beth mead is back for the upcoming nations league matches against the netherlands and scotland. the 23 player squad also includes call ups for 20—year—old grace clinton and 19—year—old goalkeeper khiara keating. she is a character that brings positive energy on pitch and off pitch. i think we have more players like that but it is good to have her back. her experience, the way she plays, she is different than other players on the wing. she brings different things. that is good for the team too so we have different opportunities again. i expect, on and off pitch, that gives us extra energy. in english domestic football, a premier league proposal to stop clubs bringing in players on loan from associated teams has fallen just short of coming into force. the idea was to prevent a club like newcastle temporarily signing someone from a team in the saudi pro league which is also owned by the country's public investment fund. 0ur sports editor dan roan was at the premier league meeting. today's premier league shareholders meeting at this 5—star hotel in london behind me, i think it's fair to say it was one of the most eagerly anticipated in recent times. a lot for the club representatives to discuss. one of the expected measures people thought may well be brought in, in fact did not happen by the narrowest of margins. we have known for some time that there are some clubs who feel there should be a temporary block and ban on related party loans as they are known. and that is where clubs can sign players on loans from teams that share the same owner. it is known the premier league were in favour of this temporary ban, it went to a vote here earlier this afternoon. it needed a two—thirds majority to be brought in. in the event, only 13 clubs voted for it and seven against. had it been 14—6in favour, that temporary ban would have been brought in. what it means is, for example, newcastle united who have an injury crisis, can in january transfer window look at the possibility of bringing in players that represent teams that have the same owner in saudi arabia. which is of course the pif, public investment fund, the sovereign wealth fund of saudi arabia. there have been rumours eddie howell may be looking at the possibility of bringing in a former wolves player ruben neves on loan to help bolster his squad. he currently plays for al hilal in the saudi pro league. if he wants to and if it is still an option, it now appears that could happen. newcastle united minority co—owner and director amanda staveley had nothing to say on the matter as she left the meeting. now to a huge shock in the davis cup where defending champions canada are out, beaten by finland who have reached the semi finals for the first time. it did actually start well for canada. milos raonic, making his first davis cup appearance in five yea rs, beat patrick kaukovalta in straight sets to put his team ahead in the tie. 0tto virtanen made it all square though by winning the second singles match in malaga. the finn beat gabriel diallo in straight sets 6—4 7—5. and so it all came down to the doubles where the pair of harri heliovaara and otto virtanen came out on top, beating alexis galarneau and vasek pospisil in straight sets to reach the semi finals. finland will play either australia or the czech republic in the semi finals. they play on wednesday. new regulations from the international cricket council will limit the time taken, between overs, in men's white ball cricket to under 60 seconds. the governing body has also barred transgender women from playing in international women's matches which come after a nine month consultation and will be reviewed in two years* time. 0ur correspondent joe wilson has more. this has been and will continue to be a topic which provokes strong opinions from many positions. it's an emotive issue. what cricket is trying to do today in line with what other sports are trying to do is try and find a position of certainty and perspective of fairness. from now on, to compete internationally in women's cricket, you need to go through puberty as a woman. to put it from the other side of it, there is now no facility to go through male to female gender reassignment post puberty and then to play women's international cricket. this does bring cricket broadly into line with the stance international sports in general are trying to take on this issue. it is an emotive topic and one that has proved very difficult to find a position of clarity and fairness on. in the broadest sense in terms of this issue of gender equality i should point out another decision made today by the icc is men and women umpires will now get paid the same. whether they are standing in male orfemale international cricket. that appears to be a position of unfairness which is long overdue being corrected. the icc also announced that sri lanka' suspension has been lifted. they had been banned in the wake of government interference in sri lanka's cricket administration but now will be able to compete internationally again. the icc will however retain control over the board's funding. now to some amazing pictures from thailand where the stand up paddling world championships have taken place. attracting almost 900 entries from 52 nations, this year's event was the biggest yet with five days of competition in three different disciplines — sprint, technical and long distance, making up the schedule. the competition, which was first held in 2019, is an annual event organised by the international canoe federation and first held in 2019. and from racing on water to a very different type of racing on grass. this is the inaugural edition of the mascot 0lympics involving characters from several spanish football clubs which took place on sunday. there were six competitions held including a 100m steeplechase and a 100m sprint with the event taking place at the estadio municipal butarque — home to second—tier spanish side leganes. rapid stop there. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website. that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the colder. in the short term, wednesday morning brings high pressure to the south of us, low pressure to the north. and this frontal system between this warm front here and this cold front here, a wedge will see this frontal system starting to journey southwards, outbreaks of rain with that. ahead of it, a lot of cloud, it is going to be very mild. behind that frontal system, we will just start to introduce something a little bit colder. it will turn increasingly windy, too, across the north of scotland. so here's our weather front for thursday. it'll be moving southwards. it's a cold front you'll notice, that means the air behind it is going to be turning colder. so here's ourfrontal system — this is the dividing line ahead of it. a lot of cloud through the day on thursday. behind the weather front, sunny spells and showers. some of those showers turning wintry over high ground in northern scotland. gales developing in the far north here. it really will feel cold by the end of the afternoon. furthersouth, holding on to something milder. but by friday, all of us into these northerly winds, some showers which will be wintry, especially over higher ground in the north, perhaps even to lower levels in the far north for a time. some decent spells of sunshine, still 11 celsius in cardiff and plymouth, but most places feeling colder than that. in fact, when we factor in the strength of the wind, it will feel subzero for some parts of eastern and northeastern scotland. into the weekend, we stick with a chilly feel. there will be quite a lot of dry weather, though, and some spells of sunshine. bye for now. all caught up now, see you later. live from washington. this is bbc news. israel's top leaders approve a deal with hamas to release dozens of hostages with a
