to change the trajectory of this race. >> there are four months, what does he do? >> hopefully there is another debate in september if donald trump wants to do it. i ■çthink he needs to be much more visible. he needs to reassure people that have concerns that he is up for this. i think he needs to do interval -- interviews in hostile settings. it's not crazy to do things love that nature. he has to do something to demonstrate to people that he can handle hostile questioning and is up for the job and he has to make a compelling argument against donald trump, which he did not do on thursday. all of us can support that and surrogates can support that but joe biden needs to really step up his game dramatically. one speech is not enough. >> okay. you made your thoughts known and we appreciate them. thank you, my friend. in case you forgot where the spring court's ruling on presidential immunity is a big deal, in a few minutes, a sound bite that puts it into perspective. good day to ■çall of you fr msnbc world headquarters in new york. we begin with president biden at camp david for previously scheduled family time and new reaction for his first presidential debate with donald trump. dueling calls to pass the torch and for trump to serve his country by leaving the race. jen psaki gave us more. >> you trying to tell people that he is still in it. hang with us. missing a circling of the wagons around him from his closest advisers. the complaint that people do not hear from them early near times and the amended journal-constitution, the campaign is pretty them up and post them around the headquarters as motivation. it is not, in their view, especially the new york times, representative of the voters' view. and surrogates were the sunday talk shows looking ahead at what is at stake in november. >> the policies of this administration are destroying the country and the "new york times" and the atlanta journal- constitution want him out but they think he is a good president. he ■çis not a good present. he is a decent man and a failed president. >> the so much at stake, including our democracy. our flag is still there with liberty and justice for all. that is what the election is about. the supreme court saving the biggest case for last. justices expected to deliver the ruling on trump's claim of absolute immunity for prosecution. we have reporters in place covering the development of both campaigns. let's start with aaron gilchrist at the white house. who is stepping up calls to step aside and who is coming to his defense? >> reporter: we have not seen any direct calls from inside the democratic party or any corded effort to replace them. we did see those calls from the new york time and atlanta journal-constitution to step aside but we should note that the philadelphia inquirer board is saying former senate trump is the one who should and his run. that was withstanding, democrats are dealing with serious doubts about president biden about his ■çdebate performance. five people familiar with the matter told some of our reporters that president biden is discussing the future of his reelection campaign with his family at camp david today. source reached out 14 distress that the gathering is not a formal family meeting, that it is not a formal or determinative discussion. we are seeing the typical supporters divided in the approach talk about where things stand within the party right now. take a look at this. >> the question this morning is not what is joe biden going to do, the question is, who has donald trump showed up for other than himself and people like himself? i am with joe biden and it is our assignment to make sure he gets over the finish linezu[úzi november, not for his ■çsake, b for the country's sake. >> this big problem with joe biden's debate performance and just a tremendous reservoir of affection and love for joe biden in our party so that makes it a difficult situation for everybody. very honest and serious rigorous conversations taking place and any level of our party because it is a political party. >> the biden campaign is digging in right now. president biden told a group in new york yesterday, we are going to win this election. the campaign saying they have raised $33 million since thursday. pointing out some snap polling of voters over the past couple of days that they say show the debate did not really change minds. it is still a tight race. the camping trying to stay on message that former president trump is a divisive figure ■çan a figure that is a danger to democracy. >> thank you from the white house. we will turn to nbc news 2024 campaign jake in with donald trump. how are they handling this conversation about joe biden? >> we are three days post debate which is enough time for a lot of reviews and discourses you are seeing. still, there are two takeaways from thursday night. one is that there was a lot of embellishments and lies from former president donald trump that went largely unchecked during his performance. secondly, and most profoundly would be that biden's fumbling performance have caused a lot of democrats to call into question his■ç vitality. you want to point to one particular shift i have noticed from the trump campaign since thursday night's performance. trump routinely has attacked the legitimacy of biden being the democratic nominee to face off against him in november. said biden will not make it to the finish line. i be surprised if he is the person that i take on come november. that tone has largely shifted since thursday night. i was speaking with the trump campaign senior adviser and he told me it is going to be a biden versus trump rematch and biden is going to be the nominee. that was the sentiment that trump echoed at his friday virginia rally. take a listen to that. >> many people are saying that after last night's performance that joe biden is leading the race.■ç but the fact is, i don't really believe that, because he does better in polls man any of the democrats they are talking about. you've seen that. the polls come out with some of the names like gavin newsom. he cannot run california. is one of the worst governors. >> reporter: so, this is quite the departure from his routine criticism saying that biden will not make it to the finish line. to speak to the underlying strategy and where that comes from is this an attempt to hush the conversation about a governor gavin newsom type of person taking the reins from president biden, looking ahead to november? if that is the strategy we do not know yet. it is notable regardless and it is something we will be looking for more and more as president biden and former president trump.■ç -- later this summer. >> okay. maybe a little bit of weather interfering with your shot. thank you so much. >> join me is the vice president at crooked media and head of vote save america. and the political correspondent for the hill and the co-author of lucky, how joe biden barely won the presidency. want to welcome you both. want you to respond to what he is saying and what donald trump was saying. he was saying he's the worst because we don't know what he sang. after the debate performance he sang, he gets the best numbers, so he is going to be the nominee. that is who i'm going up against. can you read between the lines there? is he saying this is ■çwho he wants to go against? >> i will never try to understand what donald trump is trying to say, but i do think that he now sees joe biden as the opponent he thinks he can beat so now he wants to keep joe biden as his opponent. he came out of the debate feeling really good and now he wants to maintain how he feels and sees the rest of his campaign going to rest the way that the debate did. i don't think the rest the campaign will go that way but in his head this is his best opportunity to win because he feels like he has weakened him. >> from your reporting, has there been any settling after the initial panic among democrats or is it getting stronger? did the call yesterday help put democrats at ease or did it store things up? >> i feel like we are in a fluid moment right now where ■ç are in a wait and see moment. people are waiting, as you said earlier, for the dust to settle. spoke to a few high-level democrats in recent days that said if we start to see polls going in the wrong direction, if we start to see that democrats are now starting to lose down ballot races or starting -- the polls are getting tighter, you will see more of an uptick in people publicly questioning whether the president should continue on this course. i think the next few days, we will learn a lot about where we are. i think the president, obviously, he is very stuck -- he is not going to drop out of this brace at the time, but i think is also looking around and seeing privately, he's talking with his family and i think that democrats will have to see about■ç how this shakes out in the coming days and they know the clock is ticking because the convention is coming up. it is less than two months away so they need to know what is happening here and now is the time. that is what i'm picking up on right now. >> and he is discussing the campaign. we know that, while they are gathered at camp david, whether or not it is an official statement. it is not like official meeting, but you know they will be talking about things. top democrats are continuing to present this as a binary choice. let's take a listen to this. >> i have spent time with joe biden and i can tell you that only does he has ■ça tender heart and tha is what you need in a president. donald trump has neither. that is a binary choice in front of us and with all due respect, i think this exercise in fantasizing about a scenario that we do not have is unhelpful. >> is it really a choice between trump and biden? or is it a choice between trump and someone else? is it feasible, even, or wise, to try to replace joe biden at the top of the ticket? >> i think we've heard a lot of people say it is unrealistic to think that is going to happen. i am still in that camp. think will be really hard for us to get someone else in place of joe biden, special when the people who are putting forth names are not think about his vice president kamala harris and i think i'll create too mucç division between the party and the clock is ticking. it is june 30, it is about to be july. the democratic convention is in august i don't think there's enough time to do that. we will see what happens. it is ultimately up to joe biden to decide if he will run and the dnc but regardless of what they decide, i think we've seen the donations come in for joe biden and a lot of leaders are standing by and the voters are standing by on the democratic side. there showing support in different ways. there's no reason right now for leadership to run away from him when it seems like a lot of democratic voters are still with him. i will say there are a lot of young people since joe biden announced his candidacy who felt very strongly about his age and i don't ■çthink it is wise to tell them they do not see what they saw or their feelings. is up to the campaign to get votes and votes he to come from these young people who have had concerns. they will have to address that. think it's healthy were having a conversation about age. i think the campaign has, by and large, tried to brush it aside and not deal with it but now they don't have a choice. having to do with it had on the might be able to bring some young people around who been very skeptical about joe biden. >> you reported that one democratic strategists is very worried about fractions within the party said this, worst possible outcome would be the situation where half the party wants that and that would be referring that biden stays or goes and the half are clamoring for a new debate and new candidate and it would be disastrous. ■ç is that what matters? does the party need to make a decision and stick with it, the sooner the better? >> i think so. you are seeing -- think about a week ago, where we were. joe biden needed to solidify his base. that is what the discussion was around. how would he do that? now you have another fraction in the party where he has to figure out what is happening and he has to calm the nerves quickly. i don't think it will get any easier for him. think he really has to get out there and he has two campaign. they can needs to stop going to camp david. a lot of strategists are saying the squatter and prove. maybe have a town hall where he talks about age. you have to think his legacy here, the big picture, his legacy is on the line. a lot of this, and the party ■ç and democracy and all of the things he's talking about are on the line. he has to do all of this sooner rather than later to solidify the party. >> thank you so much. a walk down memory lane in the donald trump immunity case. we are back in 90 seconds. chewy, a citi client, uses citi's financial expertise to help drive its growth and keep its supply chain moving, so more pet parents can get everything they need... right when they need it. keeping more pets, and families, happy. ♪♪ for the love of moving our clients forward. for the love of progress. only purple's gel flex grid passes the raw egg test. no other mattress cradles your body and simultaneously supports your spine. for the love of moving our clients forward. memory foam doesn't come close. get your best sleep guaranteed. save up to $800 during our 4th of july sale. visit purple.com or a store near you no, my denture's uncomfortable! dracula, let's fight back against discomfort. with new poligrip power max hold & comfort. it has superior hold plus keeps us comfy all day with it's pressure absording layer. time for a bite! if your mouth could talk it would ask for... poligrip. clogged gutters can cause big problems fast. until now. call 833-leaffilter today for your free gutter inspection. i've had terrible flooding problems on my porch. now i understand why. right now leaffilter is offering a free inspection, on your schedule. leaffilter is a permanent gutter solution, so you never have to worry about costly damage from clogged gutters again. call us today and schedule your free inspection. to schedule your free inspection, call 833.leaf.filter today or visit leaffilter.com. we are we are going to walk down to the capitol. and we are going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women and we will probably not be cheering so much for some of them. because you will never take back our country with weakness. you have to show strength and you have to ship this might be strong. we fight. and if you do not fight like hell, you're ■çnot have a count anymore. tomorrow the supreme court will weigh in on donald trump's actions on january 6, 2021 and whether the actions are protected by presidential immunity. also trump ally steve adnan reports to prison for defying a subpoena. he told trump supporters before the right that all hell was going to break loose. joining us now is the state attorney for his home district of palm beach county, florida. it is important to viewers, and remind them, how we got here. will immunity really come down to parsing his actions that day to determine what could be considered presidential?onñpiñi >> it's good to be back with you. think the supreme court will have a divided opinion where they will set up some rules for future courts to determine whether a president's actions fall under official duties or personal private duties as a civilian. when it comes to trump, it is obvious what he did in trying to interfere with the election was not in his role as president. the white house has no role in elections, it is in the states. they cannot control themselves, they will have a scheme that will force the judge to consider the factors and have a fact finding hearing. the bad news is that my prediction is that the d.c. case will not happen before the election, but silver lining, this new trial that i think will happen will expose trump's actions before, during, and actor -- after ■çjanuary 6. >> which one to think can be fair game for criminal prosecution? >> the fake elector scheme. that is clearly illegal. i think that one is really a focal point of jack smith's case against donald trump. getting people to the capitol, setting them loose, knowing that many of them are armed, saying let's tear down the metal detectors, we don't need them. the refusal to step into call the national guard, to get troops there, his comments afterwards about we love you, you're so perfect, all that stuff can be used against him and i think none of that stop is within his role as president of the united states. the should be a no-brainer.■ç frustrated this supreme court is even stepping into this. you i think you will lose in the ruling in the long run he wins by the fact that the case is now delayed and it should have happened already. you had jack smith and a judge who wanted this thing to go but i do not think it will go before the election. >> and i say that the very last part of what he played from january 6, he said we fight like hell and if you do not fight like hell, not have a country anymore. was that telling those supporters what to do? two fight like hell? >> yes. he was a forgot about the line that i said about go peacefully march but you cannot divorce all the other stuff. you cannot ignore all the other stuff he did and did not do. as president cannot sit there in your dining room and■ç look with approval upon people ransacking the capitol. have duties as president and his actions, his words, and lack of actions billed to this moment where he would be held accountable if this goes to a jury but if he becomes president again, it is never going before a jury because he will tell the attorney general to drop the cases. >> let's talk about the logistics of the court. there comparing the speed at which the supreme court dispatch the case that kept him on the battle -- ballot in colorado with a sluggish pace. is it fair to say they acted to trump's ban of it and what are the implications of that? >> chief justice roberts want us to believe that it is an apolitical court but we can to make you should trump got on the ballot in colorado and ot$r states, they acted with speed. they acted swiftly. now when it is about whether he should stand trial before the election, they have dragged their feet and it looks like chief justice roberts has lost control of his court and the radicals on his court are in control. and very bothered by it. just the looks of it looks terrible for the court. is difficult to say this above politics when you see what is going on. >> tomorrow, steve bannon is reporting to prison for defying the subpoena. this is what i heard about it yesterday. >> with phone records that use indirect communication with then-president trump on january 5 that he was involved in a discussion in advance about this political strategy to disrupt the joint session.■ç in this foreboding clip which has been played again and again, we played in our hearings, said get ready, tomorrow, all hell will break loose. it almost like he was aware of the potentially nefarious activity that will be foot. >> how does it give you pause that he remains a top ally in the reelection bid?
