players to be respectful but there needs to be something on the other end because it is getting to a point now where my players are at a bit of a loss. the team spirit was there, the fighting spirit, the togetherness, the quality, not consistent during the whole game. gave us the chance to win the game and i think over all we deserve it because the other team tried to win the game. the players deserve the credit after a tough month for us. the last games, back—to—back defeats, we wanted to react and they issued a reaction. in spain, the girona have been proving to be the story of the season so far in la liga, but they missed the chance to return to the top of the table. they were held to a 1—1 draw with athletic bilbao. viktor tsygankov opened the scoring for the catalan side, who'd won their last 6 in a row in all competitions. inaki williams pulled their opponents level though — and that's how it finished. the point moves girona level on points with real madrid, but behind on goal difference. and two matches to bring you from serie a on monday as bologna moved up 6th in the table, after a 2—0 win against torino. earlier, milan duric*s deflected header brought an end to verona's six—game losing run, with a 2—2 draw against lecce, but they still sit second from bottom. the champions league returns this week. there are still two more rounds of fixtures to go in the group stages. but for three british sides, hopes of reaching the last 16 could be snuffed out in the next 48 hours. newcastle united, manchester united and celtic are all bottom of their groups and have really tough away trips. joe lynskey reports. two premier league club have forward momentum. this week they needit to lift them up from the bottom. manchester united and newcastle both won on the weekend in the champions league now, the last push to make it through. it is newcastle's first time in the group stage since 2002, to see it go on they need something from paris. defeat would end their hopes of the knockout, they beat them last month at saint james but since then the squad suffered. they take on the french champions with injuries and suspensions, both for the team who waited 20 years to be here to have a chance is still a breakthrough. it is good to have that mixture of emotions going into a match. we need to play on the edge and we will need every ounce of motivation to get a result. this is a defining moment and our campaign, we are well aware of where we sit in the group. what can happen tomorrow? we will give everything. manchester united are going to face down the noise. it will be the same brief on wednesday when they take on galatasaray. it is the turkish team that intimidates and they beat united at old trafford last month. for the home side, that was a low point but things got even harder when they lost in copenhagen. united have to build on two league wins since then. we had problems at the start of the season, a lot against us. injury, decisions. we are growing. we have to keep this process going. celtic also sit at the bottom but in group b they are adrift. ——group e. even a win may not be enough. their hopes are most remote as the group stage moves towards its climax. three british teams have to save it. so let's take a look at tuesday's champions league ties. a win for atletico madrid will see them into the knockouts from group e. they face feyenoord. it's tight group f, with leaders borussia dortmund taking on ac milan, who lie third. manchester city already through, vy for group g supremacy against rb leipzig. and group h leaders barcelona, take on porto. the sides level on points at the top of that one. the formula i season is done, and finished off with yet another max verstappen win. the red bull driver has been unstoppable this season — the most dominant a driver has been with 19 wins out of 22 races run. trying to topple him next years will be like conquering the highest mountain in the world, according to mercedes boss toto wolff. fi reporterjennie gow says the says one man winning all isn't new, but not always the most entertaining. we have seen other forms of domination in sport. thinking back to michael schumacher, much revered but actually at the time when he was winning, very boring. think of sebastian, lewis hamilton, unless you are cheering for that one person in the team, everyone else is losing. there have been periods of domination. this one seems to be set in for quite a long time unfortunately for some, but there is always hope. the cricket writer's club have held their annual awards. harry brook is the england player of the year, after a breakthrough 12 months in which he helped england win the t20 world cup and established himself in the test team, and nat sciver brunt has won the women's award for the second year in a row. the england all—rounder scored back to back century's against australia, as they fought back to level the ashes series during the summer, in a year when england's women enjoyed parity of match fees with their male counterparts for the first time. the match has doubled some of the salaries just playing one series. such an incredible thing to think back on. being part of it as well. itjust seems it is not really real, to me. still. just having a quick think about it and the enormity of the year that has happened. hopefully it is the first of many firsts in terms of women's cricket. how does it change the way you go about things? if it does at all? do you think strategically differently, anything like that? not necessarily. my focus is still to be as fit and as strong as i can be to perform for england and to win matches for england. in the last 12 months, i have thought more about balancing where i can go away and at home and things like that was still iam 30, 31, and i know that cricket is not for ever. actually having those opportunities there for me is also something to think about at the end of my career as well. it has been such a big yearfor me, for cricket and for everything. snooker next, and judd trump produced a dominant display to thrash pang junxu in the first round of the uk championship in york. trump beat his chinese opponent by six frames to one. he has already won the english 0pen, wuhan 0pen and northern ireland open this season. and trump will face jamie jones next, who beatjack lisowski 6—4 on a topsy turvy first round tie. jones fought back from 2—0 down with two centuries and two half centuries in a match that saw both players making errors. barry hawkins got the better of ben woollaston, winning 6 frames to 4. hawkins came from 3—1 down to defeat fellow englishman woollaston, who began with a century and initially had the edge, but missed opportunities at 4 frames all allowed hawkins to take advantage, and get the better of his opponent. just obviously my mind was wandering but as the match went on i thought i got into it a bit more. i bailed hard. i would have lost that before, i would have not given up for my confidence — i would have not had the belief to come back. i would like to make that clear, obviously the confidence comes through then. like you say, to get a win at the start of the season has been huge for me. and hawkins will take on 2—time winner mark selby, who is also through. he thrashed qualifier markjoyce 6—0 in their first round match. it was a ruthless performance from selby, who barely missed a ball and restricted joyce to just 30 points across the final five frames. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website, including the buildup to the champions league matches. that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello. it's cold out there. it's going to stay cold for the rest of the week into the weekend and probably into next week, too. in fact, there's no sign of any mild weather returning. now, how about tuesday itself? 0bviously cold, bright, if not sunny for many of us. now, here's the satellite picture. here's all that drizzly, cloudy weather that many of us experienced on monday. it's moving away towards the east and behind it, the skies are clearing. so clear skies through the early hours and into tuesday morning. and it will have been a pretty chilly start to tuesday, with those temperatures around freezing or below in the north and only around three or four degrees across central england and the south, too. but as i say, lots of sunshine around and at the very least, a bright start. now, these northerly winds are pretty cold. they're also pushing in some wintry showers, particularly to the scottish hills. some of these showers might be clipping the north—east of england. now, let's have a look at the highs, if you can call them that. around four degrees in glasgow, seven in liverpool, will match that in norwich and in the southwest there around nine degrees celsius. and then tuesday evening into wednesday, this cold front will be moving southwards across the uk from north to south. so introducing slightly colder air, and also the chance of one or two wintry showers once again. so wednesday, most likely those wintry showers occurring in the north of the country, maybe clipping the northeast, and also some areas a little bit further south. showers, i think, in the south—west will be mostly of rain. again, a lot of sunshine around on wednesday and it's a cold air, in fact, temperatures really struggling in the north. this is more like january, really. so two degrees in glasgow, around about five or six degrees in the south of the country. and then on thursday, we think this area of low pressure, this weather front, will stayjust to the south of us where it might graze the very far south of the country. but i think, for most of us, it's a case of dry weather. but of course, it's staying cold. this is what we call the anomaly map. so the blue colour indicates temperatures below average, and then you've got above average values there for portugal and spain, just iberia, really, and maybe parts of the mediterranean. so much of the continent staying cold. here's the outlook for the days ahead and into the weekend. you can see single figure temperatures in some places. really struggling to stay much above freezing so wrap up warmly. bye— bye. bye for now. live from washington, this is bbc news. israel and hamas agree to extend their temporary ceasefire as more hostages are released from gaza. amid intensifying fighting now ukraine battles hurricane winds and heavy snowfall. and, with cop28 just days away in dubai, the summit*s president faces calls to resign. i'm sumi somaskanda. thank you forjoining us. the ceasefire in gaza has been extended, to allow more humanitarian aid to enter the territory and more hostage—prisoner swaps. just hours before the deadline, qatar says israel and hamas agreed to another two days. the us says hamas will release another 20 women and children during that time. israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu says israel has added 50 female names to a list of palestinian prisoners who could be freed, if hamas releases more hostages. israel's government has reportedly recieved a list of hostages who are expected to be released on tuesday. us media is reporting that list contains 10 names. earlier, a spokesperson for the israel defense forces gave this update. we will rescue our hostages at all costs. it is our duty, it is our moral responsibility of the israel defense forces. it is why we fight and why we must keep on fighting until all our hostages are home. another 11 israeli hostages were freed monday, with some arriving via helicopter at a hospital in tel aviv. in exchange, 33 palestinian prisoners were released by israel. the bbc*s senior international correspondent 0rla guerin is in tel aviv with more.
