Fasten your seatbelt packed 30 minutes coming up. As youve heard us President Biden meets russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in geneva today the first time as president s. Many are asking with Us Russia Relations at a low point will there be anything they can agree on . Russia recently included the us on its official list of unfriendly states and both sides describe relations as at rock bottom. All this Political Tension pours over into business with sanctions hindering meaningfull trade, commercial ties between the countries have also reached a low. Philip worman is Managing Director of gpw group, a Political Risk consulting firm. Good morning. Good morning. What do you good morning. Good morning. What do you think good morning. Good morning. What do you think may good morning. Good morning. What do you think may be what do you think may be achieved here, if anything, what do you think may be achieved here, ifanything, by these two meeting today . I think the first victory is that the summit is actually taking place. The fact we have moved on from the trump carnival and the very poor relations between barack 0bama and the fact that the summit is taking place between these two very seasoned political veterans is a positive sign. There will not be a lot of Common Ground and there will be a lot of talking about redlines and emphasis on this spheres of influence but i think something constructive can come out of it. In think something constructive can come out of it. Think something constructive can come out of it. In terms of it and constructive can come out of it. I think the mood music is still pretty negative for the summit but some, lets look for some low level successes coming out of the summit. ~ , , summit. Will be covering every twist and turn, summit. Now on to the event that Market Watchers have been waiting for americas central bank, the Federal Reserve, will conclude its two day policy meeting. Although most economists believe the fed will stay the course and keep Interest Rates near zero, there are concerns about rising inflation. Recent figures show a 5 jump in the cost of goods compared to the same time last year, the biggest jump in decades. Samira hussain reports from new york these days, business is so good at this bike shop, they had very few bicycles available to sell. Good to talk to you. Corporate governance injapan is back in the spotlight after explosive reports about two Big CompaniesThere Toshiba and mizuho bank. Lets go live to our Asia Business hub and join mariko 0i. Talk us through what those reports said. Sally, lets start with toshiba, because that is the really explosive story and an independent investigation found the company colluded with the japanese government in that they exerted undue influence on active shareholders based abroad. The report calls that the biggest corporate scandal in a decade. The japanese Trade Minister said there will be no further investigations. The company has had that huge accounting scandal, if you remember, shares were demoted from the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and they just returned to the top tier only a few months ago, but this latest scandal really makes you wonder if the Company Learned anything at all from that provisional scandal. Anything at all from that provisionalscandal. It anything at all from that provisional scandal. It is important to note that toshiba is obviously very unique. It was really successful with strong ties to the government so to say that Japanese Companies and Corporate Governance overall has not improved, may be misleading or unfair but having said that, as you mentioned, it was also a bad week for mizuho bank. An independent panel found repeated System Failures were because of a Corporate Culture that prevented positive and proactive action in a crisis. What i thought was interesting was that this investigation especially into toshiba was requested byjapanese especially into toshiba was requested by japanese Activist Shareholders based here in singapore, and that is when the new trend over the last few years, so whether or not this will actually finally change Companies Corporate structure will be something that investors will be closely watching. Has there been any progress on the number of women on boards across uk businesses . A new report released today by women on boards uk, reveals that less than half of the Companies Listed in the ftse All Share Have met the target for 33 women on boards and more than half have all male executive leadership teams. So what needs to change to improve womens representation in the boardroom and what should businesses be doing to make it happen . Im joined now by the Chief Executive of women on boards uk. Welcome. Firstly, can you tell me which companies you looked at when it comes to the root search. Looked at when it comes to the root search looked at when it comes to the root search. Which companies . The all root search. Which companies . They all share root search. Which companies . They all share outside root search. Which companies . They all share outside the root search. Which companies . They all share outside the top | they all share outside the top 350 companies because that is been well covered by the government in the past. What has not been looked at and this is the first time ever, is looking at the hundreds of other companies, 261 companies outside the top 350 and that is where we found that 54 had all male Executive Teams and top Senior Management and that compares with the ftse 350 of only eight sent. So we have done a really good job of measuring and monitoring, led Ijy Measuring and monitoring, led by the government, of the Big Companies, not all the other companies, not all the other companies in the ftse all share outside those top companies. We need to measure and we need to monitor because the job is need to measure and we need to monitor because thejob is not done. Monitor because the ob is not done. . , done. And when we say, and i ose done. And when we say, and i pose this done. And when we say, and i pose this question done. And when we say, and i pose this question since done. And when we say, and i pose this question since i pose this question since i started my career in financial journalism, how can we change this . And who we are having the same conversation nearly 20 years later. But when we say how do we make the change, is that the monitoring . Is it the government looking into the statistics . Is it the conversation in the media that is making the difference which is making the difference which is why we are not seeing the changes in these companies outside the ftse 350 . When measured outside the ftse 350 . When measured and outside the ftse 350 . When measured and monitored outside the ftse 350 . When measured and monitored at| outside the ftse 350 . When i measured and monitored at the board level and only recently started to measure at the executive level. By measuring it it meant someone is looking at it. What needs to be done really is that companies have to stop trying to fix the minority, that is not the issue. They need to start investing in leadership and treat it like a serious change programme within their companies did it things like not unconscious bias, we know that training does not work. What does work is helping people become more consciously inclusive, in meetings for example. Leadership is difficult. Managing people is difficult. Managing people is difficult and you really do have to put a lot of effort into make sure you have the right structures and processes in place to make sure everybody has ambition and everyone can get to the top. But we must measure it and we must monitor it and that is what is not happening. Also with the Gender Pay Gap data i am happy to talk about that as well because that does not look good either. find does not look good either. And how has the does not look good either. And how has the pandemic changed this . If at all . Has it helped in terms of highlighting the relevance of women and the need for women in the boardroom . I dont think. The pandemic is actually made it ultimately long term i think it will be betterfor long term i think it will be better for diversity because we now we can work flexibly and everybody wants to work flexibly. But what concerns me is the government has chosen not to get companies to produce reduce the Gender Pay Gap. 0nly15 reduced it last year and the data that we analyse shows very clearly that the Gender Pay Gap for ftse all share is around 20 , against the Industry Average of 30 of all companies. And it is up against 40 against the all company average. Is every company average. Is every company that has do report, of around 20 of bonus level. So yes, we are reporting it to a Government Website that nobody is measuring and monitoring what is happening with individual companies. For example i could not find 25 of the Gender Pay Gap reports you have to publish them if employing more than 250 people. These companies hide it in pdfs. We see it, if you have a good explanation and also what measures they would would put in place to close it. Some of the quotes we got from companies were laughable. But there were really good ones as well. ~. ,. ,. ,. , well. Well done, fiona for uttin well. Well done, fiona for putting the well. Well done, fiona for putting the spotlight well. Well done, fiona for putting the spotlight on i well. Well done, fiona for putting the spotlight on these businesses, those outside the ftse 350. It looks like we need to look at them in more detail going forward. Thank you for your time this morning. An interesting analysis and data. Now, lets talk at the luxury secondhand goods. The resale luxury e Commerce Industry is growing rapidly. Earlier this month Depop The Gen Z focussed shopping app was snapped up by etsy for 1. 6 billion, and now big brands like gucci are collaborating with the online luxury resale business the realreal. But second hand luxury doesnt necessarily mean cheaper you could have to pay more than the original retail price. Welcome to the programme. Using boomin welcome to the programme. We are seeing an incredible level of demand for super brands like chanel right now. The worry is for many that Companies Like yours, the minute a new handbag is put out, you snap them all up and then you sell them on for a profit. That is the thinking. Is that what is going on . If only it were that easy. The most desirable handbags on the market from brands very much derive their value from the fact that they are so difficult to buy in the first place. It is their scarcity that gives them value. So even if we wanted to snap them up we would not be able to. Not be able to. About the problem not be able to. About the problem of not be able to. On tuesday that is the close on tuesday that is the close on tuesday and a bit of profit taking going on in terms of tech stocks listed on the nasdaq. You are up to date and i will see you soon. Hello again. Tuesday was another very warm day across england and wales. Temperatures peaked at 27 degrees celsius. Thats just two down from the hottest day of the year, which was at the start of the week on monday. And as i say, england and wales enjoyed a lot of sunshine. Scotland and northern ireland, a different story. We had rain, and that band of rain continues to push its way eastwards over the next few hours whilst weakening, so the rain will become lighter and patchier. Across the board, temperatures staying up into double figures as we head into the first part of wednesday morning. Now, this front is a cold front, and its an important one. Very weak, it will bring just a few patches of rain across North West England and north west wales. Sunny spells for scotland and northern ireland, a few isolated showers. Dry picture for east wales and most of england with lots of sunshine. But its this front that separates the fresh air in the north west from the increasingly humid air across east wales and england. And big temperature contrasts, too. Perhaps 18 degrees across the north west of the uk. Across east wales and into the heart of england, temperatures well up into the mid 20s, the high 20s in places. But as we head into wednesday night, the atmosphere will become very volatile and will go bang. Yes, the first batch of thunderstorms, the first batch of quite a few thunderstorms, will be working in on wednesday night, pushing in perhaps across east wales, certainly getting parts of england. And those storms will tend to clear north eastwards as we go through thursday, with the weather settling down to a degree. Still fresh air across the north west, still quite humid across parts of eastern england. Some uncertainty with the temperatures. Depends, really, how much sunshine we get through some of that highest cloud across eastern areas, but it could potentially be a bit warmer than that. 0n into friday, well, another batch of storms is going to be heading in from france. Again, its mainly targeting england. That will tend to push its Way Northwards as we go through friday night, with the weather again settling down, calming down to a degree as we head into saturday. And then we do it all again. Saturday night sees another batch of storms come through. This area of storms is probably going to be a little bit more widespread as it works its Way Northwards, joining forces with an atlantic Weather Front in the west. And that area of rain, thundery at times, will push northwards on sunday. So, weve got several bouts of thunderstorms coming our way over the next few days. The biggest of those could bring, well, nearly a months worth of rain in just a few hours. Flash flooding is possible. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. 0ur headlines today. Covid vaccinations are to be made compulsory for Care Home Staff in england.
