even in the running, but after guiding argentina to world cup glory, lionel messi has won a record extending eighth men's ballon d'or title. spanish women's world cup winner aitana bonmati claimed her first on a star—studded evening in paris. messi was presented the award by david beckham, co—owner of his new side inter miami. as expected, he beat several big names, including manchester city's erling haaland and psg's kylian mbappe to win football's top prize after captaining his country to a famous world cup win over france in qatar last year. messi won three more ballon d'ors than anyone else and said he couldn't imagine having the career he's had and the fortune of being part of the best team in history. well the women's award was won by aitana bonmati, presented by the tennis world, number one, novak djokovic. the spain and barcelona midfielder winning for the first time. she helped her country to the women's world cup this summer and club barca to the champions league. the ballon d'or recognises the best footballer of the year and is voted for by 100 journalists from around the world. man of the moment, jude bellingham took the honours for best young player of the year. the real madrid and england man has been a revelation in la liga with 13 goals and 13 games for real, including two at the weekend to win el clasico against rivals barcelona. i just wanted to thank everyone who's helped me get to this point, you know, from birmingham city to dortmund, now madrid with the national team and most importantly, my family and my mum and dad here tonight, my brother back home and yeah, thank you for all the support. it means a lot and more to come. former spanish football federation president luis rubiales has been banned from all football related activities for three years by the sports world governing body fifa. rubiales kissed spain forward jenni hermoso on the lips following the women's world cup final win over england. hermoso says it wasn't consensual, with rubiales eventually stepping down from his role last month. he denies any wrongdoing. our reporterjoe currie explains the latest developments. fifa say the ban related to a breach of article 13, which is the disciplinary code and offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play. in a statement they said that fifa reiterates its absolute commitment to respecting and protecting the integrity of all people and ensuring that the basic rules of decent conduct are upheld. now, in the wake of the kiss, it drew widespread criticism across the world within football, with outside of football, you have to feel today that fifa are really sending a very strong message notjust to rubiales about his behaviour on that occasion, but also to all those who work in football and in particular to women's football. fifa also said that rubiales* three year banned from all forms of football, is subject to any potential appeal, which leaves the door open for rubiales to potentially try and have his ban reduced or maybe even removed. now, over the last couple of months, this story has rumbled on. we've heard a lot from the women's spanish national team. they've been very vocal about what happened on that night and in the previous couple of years as well. we're yet to hear from any of the players today. however, the spanish women's national team play switzerland away tomorrow night in the women's nations league. there will be pre—match media, there'll be post—match media. and you can guarantee that they will certainly be asked about this. so if we don't hear from them today, you'd expect by at least tomorrow night, post that game, then we will get some reaction from the players themselves. jo currie there. now rugby australia have confirmed that eddiejones has resigned as head coach of the national team. jones will depart next month following a poor world cup campaign which saw the wallabies lose to fiji and wales and failed to reach the knockout stage. jones won just two of the nine games while in charge during the tournament in france. jones denies speculation linking him with a return as japan coach, insisting he was committed to his role with australia. the english ice hockey association says it will be mandatory to wear a neck guard during all on ice activities from next year onwards. the announcement comes following the death of nottingham panthers forward adam johnson. tributes have been paid tojohnson, who died after suffering a serious cut to his neck from a skate during saturday's challenge cup match against the sheffield steelers. the association also said their strong recommendation is that all players wear neck guards with immediate effect. the association oversees all levels of ice hockey in england below the elite league, the top division of ice hockey in the uk, whichjohnson played in. neck guards are currently mandatory for under 18 years in the sport. but at a senior level, hardly anybody wears them and we're talking about a relatively inexpensive bit of kit that is compulsory in other countries like sweden and finland. it all has echoes this discussion of what happened to phillip hughes, doesn't it? the australian cricketer who was killed by a bouncer to the head around nine years ago now. now in the aftermath of his death they introduced stem guards to the back of cricket helmets. there are already clubs, ice hockey clubs today who have made adaptations to their own safety policies following the death of adam johnson. let's be clear, this isn't the first time this has happened in ice hockey before. and i know people that have had very close, very close occurrences with this previously as well. and it's a real shame that it takes something like this to to drive change. at oxford city stars now we have mandated this to all our players. so we have now placed an order for some new neck guards for all our players, and they will have to wear those during all on ice activities moving forward. as a club, we really hope this pushes things forward for the whole sport, not only here in the uk but further afield as well, and that we can really be a leader on this. people who were against the halo in f1 when that came in and that has changed the way that f1 works and the safety elements of it. and i think we need to look at this as a sport. ice hockey has been around for many, many years and of course there has been accidents over those years. but if we can take one thing out of this tragedy and make a positive impact from that, it would be to increase player safety. we've had a statement from the governing body, the english ice hockey association, that they make a strong recommendation that all players across all levels wear neck protection on the ice. they're going to make that recommendation mandatory on the 1st of january. now, part of the reason they can't make it compulsory immediately is because of a lack of stock of this type of equipment. within the next 12 months, they say they're going to conduct a thorough review of player safety as well. but they end this statement by saying that it's unacceptable for a player to lose their life while playing sports. they say our responsibility is not only to avert the recurrence of such a heartbreaking accident, but also to pre—emptively address other foreseeable incidents in the future. now to cricket and afghanistan are proving themselves the surprise team of the cricket world cup so far. they beat sri lanka by seven wickets in pune for their third win of the tournament following victories over england and pakistan. it puts them fifth in the table, just two points off the semifinal places. joe wilson reports. two world cup teams with something in common. did you beat england? yeah. us too. captain kusal mendis is often crucial to sri lanka's batting, but he only made 39. and afghanistan have rashid khan... on target in his 100th one day international. well, sri lanka improvised their way to 241 — a total that seemed chasable. watch out. in reply, afghanistan nought for one the excellent rahmanullah gurbaz gone. but rahmat shah made a steady 62 and afghanistan regained control. azmatullah 0marzai, 23 years old, added the energy and three sixes. the captain, hashmatullah shahidi, ensured his team got home with 28 balls to spare. a happy englishman at the world cup? well, jonathan trott*s coaching is part of the story. afghanistan have won three matches and they still could reach the semi—finals. joe wilson, bbc news. afghanistan are playing in just their third world cup but are making their mark with former england playerjonathan trott as their head coach. after their latest impressive performance he praised his side's run chase against sri lanka. we've been working really hard at our batting and doing the basics. i know it's very cliche, but the way that we train the things, the way we think about our cricket, certainly when batting. the way that we accept responsibility at times as well. i think you're starting to see hopefully the — not the penny drop, but we're starting to see also the confidence in the players, in their own ability. you know, there's such an amount of talent. well, afghanistan are up to fifth then with sri lanka just below them in sixth place. top are the hosts, india with south africa just two points behind, but the defending champions england are at the foot of the table with little chance of progressing in the tournament and may not qualify for the champions trophy, due to be held in pakistan in 2025. and here's evidence that even at the age of 36, losing doesn't get any easier. three time grand slam champion andy murray had already missed out on match point against australia's alex de minaur, who got the better of the brit in a three hour, three set epic in the first round of the paris masters. murray there taking out his frustrations on the racket, understandably, given that de minaur has won all of their competitive meetings. there we go. that's just about it from us. you can, of course, get all the latest sports news at the usual place, the bbc sports app or from our website bbc.com/sport. storm babette. this time it's ciaran, expected to arrive wednesday night into thursday. yes, damaging gusts of winds, but more importantly, widespread heavy rain falling on already saturated ground. that could cause some issues. before that, though, we've got an amber weather warning that remains in force until 9am this morning. we're likely to see this relentless feed of wet weather, with that easterly wind. so a further 70—100 millimetres of rainfall where we've already seen some flooding. so there could be some further issues this morning. we'll also see some wet weather as well spilling across parts of north—west england, down through lincolnshire, east midlands, over into the london area. south of that, slightly brighter skies for a time, but by the end of the afternoon, more wet weather starting to push into the south—west where we had flooding at the weekend. scotland, drier with some sunshine coming through, a few isolated showers, cooler here, 7—9 degrees. elsewhere, 12—15 celsius. so that wet weather will arrive during the early hours of wednesday morning and pushing its way steadily north. and as it bumps into that cold air on the leading edge, there will be some snow for a time. it will be a pretty wet affair on wednesday, and windy with it across scotland. elsewhere, it's a case of sunny spells and scattered showers. and temperatures, similar story, we're looking at around 7—15 degrees. let's take a look at storm ciaran, then. expected to intensify quite rapidly during the early hours of thursday morning. now, the position of this low still potentially subject to change, but basically circulating around that low, we've got that weather front once again, feed of relentless rain across eastern scotland, northern ireland and southern coastal counties as well. and in addition to that, it's the strength of the winds that's a cause for concern. widespread gusts 50—60 miles an hour inland, on exposed channel coasts, 80—90 mile an hour, maybe even stronger close to the channel isles. so we really do need to keep a close eye on the weather story wednesday into thursday. even once that storm has cleared through, it stays pretty unsettled with further outbreaks of rain into the weekend. from washington, this is bbc news. calls for a ceasefire are calls for israel to surrender to hamas. benjamin netanyahu rules out a ceasefire with hamas and says
