Fort myers beach, in florida. You can see those high winds and heavy rains beginning to lash the coast there in fort myers. You can see how much the camera is shaking with the wind there, and obviously large waves warned of Storm Surges and rising water levels, as you can see coming up over the beach and onto the barriers, and beyond. This is from a short time ago in fort myers. You can see the before and after of water coming up over this hotel pool. Quite dramatic there. And just to show how dangerous this storm is, even with the storm still offshore, it is already causing damage. It has spawned several tornadoes which have been reported in the state, including in Areas that are seeing flooding. This is a home in fort myers that was hit by one of those tornadoes. You can see the roof is ripped off and the interior already destroyed, and the hurricane itself hasnt even arrived. These pictures from space give you a sense of the size of the monster storm. Its bringing winds of up to 120mph thats more than 193kph. Some Areas in florida are under an extreme Wind Warning. And more than 250,000 residents are reportedly already without power. Of course, milton comes only about two weeks after Hurricane Helene struck the state. Many cities in florida have not yet finished Cleaning Up from that storm. Just minutes ago, us president Joe Biden outlined the dangers the storm poses. It can still wipe out communities and cause loss of life, milton. The Storm Surge is still expected to be up to 13 feet. So i encourage everyone in hurricane Miltons Path to listen to local officials and follow all the Safety Instructions they give. Tampa is one of the cities on floridas West Coast that is bracing for impact. Thats where Cbs News CorrespondentCristian Benavides has been reporting and i spoke with him just a few minutes ago. Weve actually had to hunker down because of some of the Rain Bands that have been coming through, just so powerful. I think something youve got to keep in mind we are now seeing that landfall could potentially happen within the next 3 4 hours that is much earlier than what was initially anticipated. So youve got folks who perhaps are thinking, maybe they had some additional time to get to whatever location they wanted to get to, they have scrambled throughout the day. Earlier today, just to give you a sense of how people are just sort of going everywhere, there was a Vehicle Driving through, got into an accident with an Emergency Vehiclejust as into an accident with an Emergency Vehicle just as folks were trying to get to wherever it is they were going to Hunker Down That was earlier today. So youve got people who are scrambling to get to whatever location it is that they need to get to, but officials have said, you should be earlier this morning, you should have been wherever you were going to been wherever you were going to be to write out a storm like this, this potentially historic storm with historic damage. So at this point, people are hunkered down awaiting to see how this storm could impact this area. The Tampa Bay Area has not had a major hurricane to make it direct make direct landfall since 1921, over a century ago. So Everyone Herejust keeping a over a century ago. So everyone here just keeping a close eye on that track, even though it is trending south, it could still have a major, major impact on like anything the Tampa Bay Area has seen in modern history. Joining me live is Meteorologist And Journalist bob henson. Thanks for being with us on bbc news. That point made by our colleague in tampa about this being a once in a Century Type Occurrence just put that into context for us, how Hurricane Milton actually ranks with the other Hurricanes Florida is just unfortunately soak it family or with. Unfortunately its taken family or with. Unfortunately its taken a family or with. Unfortunately its taken a Worstcase Family or with. Unfortunately its taken a worstCase Track| its taken a worst Case Track against the Gulf Of Mexico. Usually hit, hurricanes, from the South Or Southwest because of that, they are grazing the West Coast, or more or less Running Parallel to it. At this point, milton developed in the western Gulf Of Mexico and spent more than two days crossing the gulf, so they had ample time to build up strength. Its one of the few atlantic hurricanes to reach category five strength. We can a little bit, then hit cat five strength on Thursday Afternoon only two other hurricanes are known to have done that in modern times. And the corsets unfortunately also is almost perpendicular to the West Coast. So bring it in any way that maximises the Storm Surge, slamming the Areas between tampa, st. Petersburg, and fort myers right now as we speak. So Ust Myers right now as we speak. So just how dangerous a storm is it then, bearing all that in mind . ~. ~ it then, bearing all that in mind . ~. , ~. , mind . We are talking about the otential mind . We are talking about the potential here mind . We are talking about the potential here for mind . We are talking about the potential here for 510 mind . We are talking about the potential here for 510 feet of L Potential here for 5 10 feet of water above Ground Level along the coast that certainly enough to inundate any structures near the coastal elevations. You cant survive something like that if youre in a building at Sea Level on the first story, and itll easily demolish buildings. This is a pretty substantially populated swathe of coastline just the counties alone, manatee and sarasota, or close to A Million people. So even though the centre is moving in such a way that the worst surge will not be in tampa or st. Petersburg, itll really slam a populated corridor, and even further south than that, itll be some damaging surge. M0 . . . Further south than that, itll be some damaging surge. Now the latest we are be some damaging surge. Now the latest we are getting be some damaging surge. Now the latest we are getting from be some damaging surge. Now the latest we are getting from the latest we are getting from the national Hurricane Centre is that itll make landfall a couple hours from now, and its moving relatively slowly, so the period until it moves off will be quite lengthy is that still the current situation . Yes, in fact it should be on the Centre Of Milton which is what will be on shore probably around nine est. Its large in terms of The Eye, so The Eye wall, the court order, the worst weather with the highest winds and heavy a strength, is already pushing ashore now in Areas like Sarasota And Southern Parts of the tampa bay region. So they are now getting the intense rains, and theres an extreme Wind Warning out for much of the Tampa Bay Area, meaning they could get winds of 100 mph over the next couple hours. So people are being advised to treat this as if it was a tornado. Get inside, get to the smallest room in your house away from windows, and youll need to be in there for a few hours because these wins could easily smash windows and cause structural damage. Thats apart from the actual tornadoes that have been happening by The One or two dozen at least across southern and eastern florida. It across southern and eastern florida. ,. , florida. That would be both a humanitarian and, for israel itself, a disastrous development. But your question is there a possibility for a Cease Fire answer is yes, Cease Fire my answer is yes, the possibility exists, but it requires three different elements. The first is, persistent diplomacy, to make very clear that the option of decoupling lebanon from Gaza Which means an end to the Hezbollah Rocket attacks on israel, which hezbollah started without provocation on october eight is first. The second is the movement of hezbollah forces from the us border un border, passed in August 2006 requires. And finally, non opposition from iran which is to say that iran is recognised, that continuation of hezbollahs attacks on israel will produce a continued israeli response in lebanon. The us has correctly told israel that the character of that response cannot be to replicate the disastrous situation in gaza and lebanon. We have supported and will continue to support your elimination of hezbollahs Terrorist Leadership but now, you must act in a manner that holds open the possibility which is real of that Cease Fire in lebanon which achieves israels strategic objectives, no more attacks on israeli soil, Move Hezbollah North of the border and a restoration of, more ideally, the establishment for the first time in 18 years a meaningful calm for Northern Israel and Southern Lebanon. In gaza, the president s message i think well have been very clear. We are very concerned about the concern that i could situation throughout gaza. We are particularly concerned at the very recent Evacuation Orders issued for what appears to be a majority of northern gaza, where i would remind some 400,000 individuals reside. I think these are the key messages, we are with you and support you, but what you do and how you do it matters greatly, and we have concerns. The northern part of The Eyewall is starting to make landfall between tampa and St Petersburg as a dangerous category three storm. Will have more shortly. Hello. 0ur Weather has started to turn a little bit cooler. You might have noticed the change, and the trend is set to continue as well. Well, here in North Yorkshire we had signs of the change, waves being driven onto the beaches here by the strengthening north to north easterly wind. Temperatures on tuesday in rhyl got up to 17 degrees, but it was just 12 degrees on wednesday, a drop of some, five degrees celsius. The drop in temperatures came as these northerly winds worked in. Now, over the next few hours, weve still got some patches of Cloud And Rain to come across england and wales, with Clearing Skies further north in scotland and northern ireland. And its here where well have the chilliest start to the day on thursday. Temperatures low enough even for a nip of frost in sheltered glens in scotland. So, starting the day on thursday, expect a bit of damp weather for southern parts of england and wales. That should clear out of the way as we go through the morning, and then elsewhere, loads of Sunshine Draped around coastal fringes. Therell be a scattering of showers, and Theyll Turn to come and go, really, through the day. A chilly wind, yes. Temperatures below where they have been over recent days 10 12 celsius. Although cooler, these temperatures are actually a little bit closer to average for the time of year. Now, the colder weather is still going to be with us into friday. Indeed, we could have A Touch Of Frost to start the day across southern portions of england and wales. Further north in scotland, Cloud Will Thicken on friday as a Weather System moves in, bringing some outbreaks of rain. Some of that rain could just about skirt into the far north of northern ireland, but further south in england and wales, its going to be a beautiful day with barely a cloud in the sky. For the weekend, still some rain left over from this area of low pressure affecting northern Areas. Sunday looks to be the better of the two days of the weekend as High Pressure builds in. So saturday, some rain around across northern ireland, scotland, northern Areas of england, and accompanying that rain, therell be some pretty strong and gusty winds. Another blast of northerly air coming down, really dropping those temperatures just seven or eight degrees for northern scotland. For northern ireland, england and wales, meanwhile, were looking at temperatures around 11 14 degrees, which is pretty close to average. As that High Pressure builds in, though, for the second half of the weekend, were looking at a cold start to the morning, a few Mist And Fog patches, but a mostly dry day with sunny spells coming and going. Temperatures for most of us between around 10 13 degrees. Bye for now. This is bbc news. Well have the headlines for you at the top of the hour, which is straight after this programme. Welcome to hardtalk, im stephen sackur. From gaza to lebanon, yemen to syria, and ultimately all the way to iran, the israeli government is intent on delivering its enemies crushing blows.
