0 to msu police, there is no longer a threat on campus, and no need to shelter in place. certainly, terrifying moments throughout the evening, as word of the shooting spread throughout campus, and law enforcement immediately spread out among the facilities, or to make sure everybody was safe, and it is okay, as they continue to search for the suspect, which we now know has been found dead. i want to turn to maureen holiday, who's a reporter with our nbc affiliate, wilx in michigan, she was at the press conference. all right maria, and for those joining us this hour, tell us what you've, heard and what we know in this hour. >> yeah, francis, what we're working on right now, police are trying to figure out the suspects affiliation with the university, like he said, he was found with the self inflicted gunshot wound, they died from outside of campus. police are working to determine his motive behind this shooting. police are describing this whole situation as a nightmare. like you said earlier, there is no active threat, and shelter in place is now over, that means yours cannot leave campus, who can come pick up their kids if they like, what we know so far is i have been three fatalities, to wherever, keyhole was one side msu union, that is adjacent to berkey all. that's all stemmed from reports of shots being fired around 8:15 a.m. tonight, that's when police arrived on campus, and thousands of those two locations. we don't know how many students were inside those two locations at the time of the shooting, police are working to, of course, make sure that the students who have been affected, and the families that have been affected, and making sure that they feel like they're being taken care, of their offering services to anybody affected, by the shooting. police say that this is still a fluid situation, there investigation is gonna continue throughout the night, we're gonna receive another update around 1:30 this morning. so in just under half an, hour we should be receiving another update, police say that their investigation will most likely continue throughout the night, of, course we are going to be here throughout the night, just waiting for these hourly updates the police have been given us. , now i'm reporting live in east lansing, -- >>, moreno and ask, you given that there is so much tension in the past several hours in this community, on campus, with word of the shooting, with where the suspect may still be out there. talk about it now, especially given the fact that this shelter in place has now been lifted. and the overall sense what may be going through the community right now. >>, yeah i think the community really just had, a breath of relief, when we found out that, the shooter was no longer a threat to the public, it's definitely going to be a long healing process, police are saying that they are now in this transition phase of continuing their investigation but also making sure the people on campus and families connected to campus just make sure that they feel safe now and we didn't hear of any prior reports of threats to the campus before the shooting so really just now trying to figure what the motive was behind it. >> and that is what investigators were looking at during the press conference. they were hesitant they did not want to say anymore about the suspect, about the shooter they don't want to say anything much about the victims now because it's still very early in this investigation they didn't want to say what kind of weapons were used at all in this as we take an image here or video and some of the students who have gathered on campus earlier. and berkey all, and also union hall it is next to, it gives a sense that area, where their cases going out time in 8 pm, or little after eight when this happened, where their students milling about, in union where i believe there's a rec center possibly cafeteria as well. >> yeah, of course, i mean it's a college campus, so everybody is walking about, we sure there was classes going on at the time and ricky hall, it's a place where historians go eat, to study, to hang out with her friends, it's popular common space for students on campus. it's not strange that there are probably large bouts, they're so of course as this night goes, on and we learn more about it, hoping to find out how many people were inside those buildings at the time of the shooting, i like you mentioned, earlier police aren't mentioning anything about the victims, and that's out of respect for the families that are affected. so we're hoping to learn more about the conditions of the five people that were hurt, so far we know that there is a range of injuries. some are life-threatening, so we are gonna be definitely keeping our eye on that. >> and give us a sense of the campus and itself. i understand, we campuses 50,000 people large when it comes to faculty, staff, administrators, employees there on campus. give us a sense also, as far as affinity. and the other facilities there, for those who are not familiar. yeah, so it's a really large campus, like you mentioned is over 60,000 students, so everybody is walking around, if you can think to maybe the size, cemented penn state, there's a downtown area, you have a lot of traffic on campus, it really is just an entire community that lives around this university. so it's, families it's students, it's older adults, you name it, there really is a wide range of ages that are here, and a lot of families, it's very large, you're always walking around, driving to campus. again, mentioned driving to downtown east lansing, says a pretty big campus, and i know it's a very large community that is going to be taking a long time to heal from this. >> given that, it is remarkable that consistent remarks we've been getting from the faculty, professor louis spoke with earlier, and soon saying that once this happened, once word of the spread, the law enforcement immediately descended on campus, they saw them everywhere pretty much outside boardrooms, outside facilities. talk about that, and basically how, when you have a situation like, this of course it is remarkable when you get law enforcement there, in just minutes. but it seems to be extraordinarily so in this case tonight. >> yeah, so police were saying earlier that, the immediate reaction from other law enforcement, from across the state, whether it be the university, local, state, or even federally with the fbi here. hundreds of first responders responded to the shooting. and you can see man with armed guns going in and out of pulse, and dorm rooms, and academic felt buildings. it really got a sense of just how serious is really, was and how scary was for the community, knowing that the suspect was still at large at the time, and these first responders are going through these buildings. yeah, it was definitely a very large response. because you have a lot of ground to cover here at michigan state university, we're talking about how large is campuses it really is its own little city here. and it was definitely a full force response from the police. >> i'm sure, reassuring to the family and friends assyrians they're not taking away from the three people who have died from the shooting and also the five people who are in the hospital right now some of them those life threatening injuries. i appreciate you being with us marine holiday, appreciate your perspective, thank you so much as we await this press conference in about 20 minutes or so, enforcement i expect him to date is again, around 1:30 eastern times, on the latest as far as a shooting on the campus of michigan state university. i don't bring in now andrew miller, a 21-year-old journalism student at msu, he was a student union building when the shooting took place. andrew, i appreciate you being with us -- mission loungers, emptiness was one guy walking towards, me and panicked look at his, face is like there's a, shooter go back to room. so i got my other coworker, and i went back to the room, sort of, lights close the doors, and we sat there for what felt like an eternity. think was 15 20 minutes, kind of listening to noises, hearing flashlights. they finally came in and got us, i called 9-1-1, they would know that we are down there. and they sent someone to come get us, we did their rifles out and everything, and it's pretty tense. >> andrei can still hear in your voice that you really sound like we are still shaken up. describe the range of emotions, what you're feeling now given what you've went through and nine and now there is no longer threats and just overall been in the situation that i can imagine is so surreal for you. >> i think it's just kicking in right now, i spent the last five hours on the dorm, with other kids who are freaked out. i don't, know the whole thing is pretty out of my experience, we don't really realize that this is happening to you, and next thing you know see all these police officers everywhere. and rights takes, new since this whole mess. >> what we are conversations with your friends, and others like being in that room for that long not knowing what was going on and trying to comfort each other and trying to reassure family members who are so worried about you >> there's a lot of, for a one point somehow they had been informed that there is a shooter in building we were in, so we made our way to the hallway, we're taking cover in there for a few minutes. so most of the time we're just looking is, ghana trying to figure out what was going on just try to make sure our friends were safe clean numbers and stuff but realistically though after a couple hours in the dirt dorm fears definitely listed people just seem to be happy to be safe and alive. >> we're able to contact your family during this time? >> yes i was able to contact my family. >> talk to me about that conversation tell me what was your conversation like. >> i'm from the conversations we are definitely tough, i hadn't really absorbed everything that happened when i called them, so they would have to stay away. and yeah, i felt bad that they had to be at home having to watch this on tv. >> and you are telling, me when you first found out about the shooting, and somebody informed you immediately ran into the room, you weather the door, want to lock them position in turn the lights off. how instinctive was that for you, and your friends, and your mates. >> i was actually just talking about this with a coworker. -- there's a lot more to be done growing up clearly. iran quiet, everyone is done what they should. -- >> and that is unfortunate reality, it's good that everybody knows what to do, because it's routine, there's a part of it and it's that growing up, going through all these lockdowns, and soon go through, parents go through with their children, despite being a parent of the student >> what is going to happen next with her group, with your friends? i heard some voices in the background, i can imagine now but this is a shooting on shelter looked at on, campus love sun's out in, about trying to find friends a lot of, winds to make sure it's okay, and share their stories as well. that's the leon certainly and the reality that there are three people dead, from this, and that there are five people in the hospital, with these serious injuries. talk about moving forward at this point we know that classes will be canceled, and activities canceled for at least foreseeable future. i'm not sure the safe is campus swinging, with a measure how safe gonna feel walk around night. >> talk to me about, that is saying they don't feel safe campus, whether those extended as before tonight, after tonight, taught me more about that. >> they do their jobs, well they take the job seriously. but east lansing is a little bit to see the city, and there's always that risk, but now that there's been a massive violent attack, and they're gonna change the tone of how they treat going out about on campus. >> given that i also want to stress the response of the police, tonight. from other students as well. from other members of the faculty. who said immediately afterwards spread that was evident now from the video that we're seeing. is that the response there of law enforcement, of msu police given the fact that there's such a widespread campus but they're able to do that. so effectively. and securing people and making sure that everybody was sheltering in place. and the areas that need to be evacuated. talk to me about the sense of that kind of security based on what you saw tonight. >> it was pretty insane to see how many people, law enforcement officers showed up, came to head to the situation. there's a lot of frustration about how long was taking. but i think at the end of the day they did a good job letting students know they're safe. that there was someone do something about the issue. there was some presence on campus within seconds. i know some police and fbi agents were there. and they give me help they. so >> that is the most so you can have right now. especially after being so shaken about the events taken tonight. the processing this in the time will take to grasp what happened, and what it means, and the aftermath. and knowing that they're going to be community from the shock and sadness that you all will be feeling once you know more about the circumstances. under the reluctant to share about the identity of the shooter, others that he was found outside campus, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. we do not know the connection to msu. neither do we know the identities of those who have died. andrew miller junior we still appreciate your time and being with us at this time we're trying to process yourself. and sharing your experience. we thank you, and wish you the best of luck. all right, thank you. we are expecting a press conference from michigan state university. and the next ten minutes to update us on the fatal shooting on campus that happened earlier this evening. a little after 8:00. local time. we know that three people have died from the shooting. five people are in the hospital, some with life-threatening injuries, serious injuries. it's happening in two locations on campus at berkeley hall and the adjacent msu union. as you can see here, the podium is they're getting ready to update us again. we are expecting a press conference from michigan state university. and the next ten minutes to update us on the fatal shooting on campus that happened earlier this evening. a little after 8:00. local time. we know that three people have died from the shooting. five people are in the hospital, some with life-threatening injuries, serious injuries. it's happening in two locations on campus at berkeley hall and the adjacent msu union. as you can see here, the podium is they're getting ready to update us again. after an hour of or sense there last press conference. this shooter has been found dead from a self inflicted gunshot wounds. again they were really reluctant to churn other formation because this at the crime scenes still need to be processed. several crimes evening to be processed. they flew to piece together so much before they share any other information to find out exactly what happens when it comes to motive, again, in the connection of the shooter to the msu unity. and for those have died as well. >> as we await this we are all hoping to speak with other members of the community as well. we have heard from them before and many of these people who spoke with us were certainly terrified at the events. but also hopeful and the healing of the community. we will take a quick break at that continue on the other side. shooting in michigan state university were three people have died. what we would say in the press conference by messy police i would bring in stephanie anthony. she's a director of college access initiatives and michigan state university. she just left turkey home the shooting first happened. stephanie, i know you spoke earlier on msnbc when there are so much more uncertainty. did you know there is a fatal shooting they would end up on the shooting aspect of their still out there. but now we know that the shooter is found that from the self inflicted gunshot wound. talk to me, now, about your thoughts given this major development in the story. >> well i think, certainly, that it is important to not let the shooter be the focus. i think it is important to continue to send prayers and love. to the victims of this tragedy. and i'm not sure what he was dealing with at that time. but it's never okay to intentionally harm others. when you are in pain. and those are my thoughts. >> let's start first with your experience earlier in the evening. because you just up the building. talk about what you first heard. word of the shooting, how you went about it, and given this news that there is no longer a threat to the community. there is no longer a shelter in place order. and now there could be some relief with the pain that someone you're gonna have to deal with. for members of the community have died from. >> absolutely. the thought. the thought of it is that when we left. not knowing, not having any idea. that's something like this could happen in a short period later. it is, it is overwhelming. i think that's having our students be picked up by moms and dads. grandparents, and guardians. you know, people heading home for lights uppers. they can get everything was going to be fine. it was just so shocking to know that, at that juncture. so many of the kids that we care for the community where there. and could've been there. when the individual that was the shooter came through. it was shocking. just to know that people lost their lives. very sad. it is a heavyweights. i heavyweights. on one's heart. just even think about it. >> i can imagine that is what you are going through. it's icy or struggling to even come to terms with it as other students and many people in their parents when they're picking up their kids and anybody pauses to assess and really let this sink in. so it is going to be, i can imagine, a very very difficult few hours. 24 hours. 48 hours. for the community. where do you go from here? >> i think it's going to be even beyond the 48 hours. and i totally degree. it's very difficult for all of us. i think at this juncture. we are going to do best if we're able to take advantage of the options that are there for support. if that means utilizing 9-8-8. or nine 800 273 talk. just to talk with someone. to work through it this. there's a sense of grief and sadness that has just, i think, kind of twisted over the university. they have a lot of healing work to be done. a lot of support for those that lost their lives with their families. and yeah. >> stephanie, we'll continue to talk to you i might have to break away so we can bring our viewers the press conference that the latest update from msu police. but as i continue to talk with you. explain to me your role in being in that facility tonight. i know you're the director college access initiative. that deals with representatives students. top matrix pairs with them. i'm sure they're looking to you as a figure of comfort and support during's entire time. when this is happening. on the sussexes already dismissed. tells us about that? >> they were dismissed when this happened. typically there are times when we get together on a regular basis each week. for tutoring, and i have a student staff issue. student staff that works to provide excellent tutoring service to our students who came from the community. we work with high schools in the landscape area. and our students there are phenomenal. they come in, we have to prepare them for their college. provide tutoring. academic enrichment. type of services. maybe try to expose them to as many avenues of support as we can. >> have you heard from them? have you talked him tonight? have you talked to other members of the community? what were those conversations like? >> i find it very interesting that my students. the high school students. we're also reaching out to me. almost before i could reach out to them. are you okay doctor anthony? and i think it speaks to the strength of the young people all around us. and their courage. i think they're concerned that they expressed was very heartwarming. even though they were uncertain as to what had happened. and most people were walking around right now are still in the days. >> and a lot of that comes from the uncertainty of not knowing. being in the circumstances of the shooting. police were not forthcoming. and there's so much to still investigate before they share that. maybe they will in the next few minutes here. they're expecting them to update us. but talk about how difficult that will be to process. no it was a shooting a random shooting? was it a targeted shooting? what was the motive there? and how, in the next days, weeks, the committee will have to come to understand that. or deal with that. knowing that this is the threat so close to all of you? >> he'll be extremely difficult to process. no one ever expects that they can go to class. or lock down the street. or sit in the building to lose their lives. i think they will ever expect that or expect that someone they know can be harmed. so it is very hard to contemplate and to think about. i think that it's a tough road ahead. i do believe that's the spoke but earlier. that we have a strong community. we've been through some things. we say we are 60,000 strong. so we would push through this. >> you mentioned earlier that i believe you have a child who is currently a student there. so you're speaking on the behalf of a member of the staff administration. but also as a mother. >> yes ma'am, also as a mom. also as a mom. >> whatever conversations have been like with your son? he's a student there. what were those conversations like today given this outcome? >> he said he stopped by. i mean, it was interesting. he stopped by to help me. to assist me and carrying my things out. to the car. and we were waiting, we sat and waited, because one of our students was waiting for their mom or dad pick them up. and i never leave my kids there. you know, just leaving them. and we're just having a little momsen bonding time. and i dropped him off at his apartment. and headed home. so i think he also is stunned. it's stunned. as ours roommates. everyone. >> we both are very fortunate that you had each other there on campus. and could comfort each other. face to face. in person. i can imagine thousands of students cannot. thousands of parents cannot. and that comfort has to be over the phone. after all of this. how will this change how you go about your day? and everything that you do. >> are we hearing that -- let me turn to this is msu police are now updating us. let us listen. >> it is something that is quite unimaginable. it has been imagined in other places, at the times, but we just can't imagine that it is here. we are devastated the loss of life. i want to wrap our warm arms around every family that has touched by this tragedy. i'd give them the peace and understanding and moments like this. our campus grieves, we will all grieve. and we will change overtime. we cannot allow this to continue. to happen. again. i want to thank the asa and you president and our faculty senate. their leadership and for their leadership throughout this event today. to our police, to all of those in the east lansing area, to the governor, to our senators, and all the folks who have reached out to make sure that we had him as you know that they are standing by our side. to our students we will take two days where we will move to emergency operation to give ourselves time to think and to grieve and to be together. for our faculty and staff, we will similarly provide to all of you the next two days to think and grief and come together. and this part in community, this family, we will come back together. tomorrow morning at the hanna center at madam, resources will be available for members of the families who want to reach out there. we have caps eap that will be available for our students and faculty. there is little else that could be said. either then you or community that is not together by each other. and we will hold each other up. and moments of grief, as well as celebration. but today we have come together as a family. i will grieve together. i want to thank mayor and be sure that the other members of our community for standing with us. and mayor sure has a few words that he'd like to bring. >> tonight has been horrific. it's been horrific for all of the students here and around the region. schools are being closed. this is affected our whole region, our whole community. it is affected families. everyone across our community. i see community because tonight, our entire region came together. we have law enforcement. we have firefighters, and ems. we have hemus and first responder from all over michigan. from all over michigan. we have to call and rushed to campus to help. i've been in constant contact with iran bacon. east lansing. who's at the police station. he wants to be here in the police station coordinating along with the chief. with the state police. along with the county and several others. we know that now we have to come together to heal. lansing will provide resources and conjunction with michigan state university and he's landing. it was time it was all throughout the city of lansing. and from all over michigan. we will come together and we will heal and we will move forward together as a community. when i pass it back to deputy chief and he will share more information from on horsemint. >> tonight has been horrific. it's been horrific for all of the students here and around the region. schools are being closed. this is affected our whole region, our whole community. it is affected families. everyone across our community. i see community because to deputy chief and he will share more information from on horsemint. >> thank everybody. my name is chris rodman and the deputy chief of the police and public safety. on my right shoulder is our vice president for public safety, and chief of police. no i want to start by saying we have been committed to being as transparent as possible. and sharing as much information as we can since the start of this horrific incident. i stand before you with a few minor updates that will provide and that we will open it up for a couple of questions. please keep in mind that there is not much new information that we have since we last had a briefing about an hour ago. i will start by sharing an update that the five victims that were transported to the hospital were transported to sparrow hospital in lansing. all five of those victims remain in critical condition. i will also share that the incident that occurred off campus with the suspect occurred in the city of lansing. off campus. that suspect is we now know is a 43-year-old male. that 43-year-old male is not affiliated it anyway with michigan state university. he is not a student, faculty, staff. and we have no idea why he came to campus to do this tonight. it is part of our ongoing investigation. has the president has said we know this news is so difficult for those within our campus community and beyond. it's one point remember that the brief of some individuals may be experiencing as normal. and there are number of ways that individuals can seek support including talking with friends, families, and colleagues. after this briefing we will be sharing supportive resources through our police and public safety. social media pages that we would ask people to follow. as well as the university communications. highlighting other resources that are available in addition to the event tomorrow at the hanna community center. >> just a reminder. this is an ongoing investigation. that would involve multiple agencies that are currently here on campus. and some, based on expertise, that will also exist in the future. this is a process, it will take some time. i know we all want on answers. and as soon as we have them we will share them. that is something that will occur over the next few days and we will continue to have this update with our community as well as with media moving forward with it. it's a process. the answers will come. hopefully what has been shared to this point is enough to assist in what we are all trying to do. which is to recover. at this point. the next couple days as we heard. and also deputy chief roster. there's some re-so that we available. if we witness people have experience. speak up. sometimes they cannot do it alone. sometimes they just need a little assistance to get there. those resources will be made available. i will now take questions. are there any other victims? >> to our knowledge there are only eight total victims in this case. three that are deceased and five at the hospital. >> do you have an update on the social status of these victims? >> we do not have the specific updates but we are told that they remain in critical condition. we may have future updates on more specific updates and the morning. as we cornet that information the sparrow how the system. >> we are still working to fully identify all the victims that are involved in this case. and if they have affiliation to our university. we will continue to. we will continue to pursue that and we will share that information as soon as we are able to. please understand that every victim is a family and a loved one's. and we need to be respectful to that and we will share information as soon as possible regarding the identity of those victims. especially the deceased. and any affiliation that they may have had with the state university. >> i don't currently have that information. our investigators have that information. we are still processing it, and working through it. hopefully tomorrow, will be able to uplift that information together. and share more details. maxlength=32> so to be a collaborative process. we do have ability to partner. we will do that in a circumstance like this, we >> it is a home surrounded in north lines to might, now the home of the suspect? >> i can't confirm or share any information about that right now. there are several parts of the investigation. including the suspect's residence, where he lived, that a private investigation, i'm not able to show that at this time. >> who was a suspect a lansing resident? >> i cannot confirm residency status of the suspect at this time. >> any update on the weapon that was used? >> no, we do not have a current update, in terms of the weapon types of his used. that will be part of our investigation, obviously, and will work through that. who will share information when we're able to. please understand that we may have initial information, before we show, that we want to make sure it's accurate. so that's part of the process that we're working through the investigation, isn't confirming the accuracy of information, which is why we want to be mindful of that, as we share information. >> can you confirm the suspect had on them at the time. backpack, more ammunition, another weapon? >> i cannot confirm what the suspect had on him at the time of the incident off campus.
