could collapse at any moment. what we know about the talks happening right now behind the scenes, and what happens if it all falls apart. a reminder, the current pause expires in just two hour's time. in the meantime, egypt says these 11 israeli hostages are being handed over today. this in exchange for the 33 palestinian prisoners. so we will get to that, plus the other end of the current cease fire. it still appears to be holding, much needed humanitarian aid continues to across over into gaza, a total of 200 trucks are expected to get in today. also today, a visit to israel from elon musk. he toured a kibbutz with prime minister benjamin netanyahu a little earlier, and also met with idf soldiers and family members of those killed on october 7th. what we know about the deal that he has struck with israel. we've got a whole lot to get to, so we're going to get started with the reporting. joining us from tel aviv, we have nbc news correspondent david noriega. from doha, qatar, nbc news chief international correspondent keir simmons, and nbc news who's correspondent, monica alba. a big welcome to all of you. david, the breaking news with the hostages being exchanged right now. again, this has just gotten word in the last three, four minutes. have you heard about it, and what do you know? >> reporter: that's right, we did just hear from the idf that these eleven israeli hostages are in the hands of the red cross. this is that crucial first step in the handover over the hostages we have seen in the first three days of the cease fire. also importantly, this is the beginning of the process by which we confirm the identities of the hostages. we haven't known who they are until they are safely in the hands of israeli authorities. that means, for example, we do not know for sure whether this group of 11 includes any americans. this is something that the u.s. government itself has been anxiously watching. here is what national security council spokesperson john kirby had to say earlier today on that question. >> we're certainly hoping that another batch of hostages gets released today as part of the fourth and final day of the original agreement. as it has come out over the last three days, we don't really know until you get into the end game, who's going to be on that list, and even then, you have to watch closely to see if who's on the list is the folks that come out. we're watching and hoping. >> reporter: this is all very minute by minute, alex, and we will be updating you as we learn the item of these eleven hostages to be released tonight. back to you. >> david, thank you so much for that. we know they're on their way. we are beginning to get the names. we're trying to compile those together so we'll be able to announce them to everyone who has been watching this so closely. let's talk about the possible extension. it appears to have been agreed to, keir, who is first of all, leading the talks? would it take effect at midnight local time? meaning there would be no cessation in what we have seen the last four days. again, that's only a little bit under two hours from now. >> reporter: yeah, i think it just rolls over, and i think it has been agreed, certainly, we've heard from pretty much all sides, including the administration. and administration officials saying that the extension has been agreed. there were some concerns about whether it would be, and part of that was about whether hamas, islamic jihad, other groups would have the hostages to actually release, and of course you'll remember that parts of the initial deal for the four days was that they would kind of go around, if you like, gathering up captives to be able to release more. so now we're at the stage where pastinian prisoners per day n, beuse the deal, and it's just the continuing deal is three palestinian prisoners for every israeli hostage. we've got that. we hear from the qatari prime minister in doha, into nbc and the financial times suggesting that there was a number of 40 women and children that could be released. so that would suggest that we might even see more days ahead, more extensions. but it's chaotic, it's clear from the stories of the hostages and from what we've been hearing in the past few weeks. it's chaotic in gaza, and so i think potentially one of the issues here is that the israelis will have wanted to take it step by step, rather than agreeing to a four-day extension, and 40 hostages because it's not clear that hamas are giving people the list of hostages who will be released until the day of. and there's been some confusion over that at times over the weekend. things were smoother today. it was very very difficult. very tense on saturday. so there is a sense that it's now a little bit familiar that they know the process, the aid is getting in even to northern gaza. as you mentioned at the beginning, things can always fall down at any point, and we should just remember, in the end, this is just a pause and at the moment, the israeli defense forces are talking about going back to the war guns w understand this is all over. >> absolutely. keir, and for all of you, i just want to tell you, we're getting details right now. we have three names we can offer to everyone. sharon aloni, 34 years old. that last name is cunio. and 3-year-old emma aloni cunio, and yuni aloni cunio. three of the 11 that have just been released. as we extend this pause, how much pressure is there on benjamin netanyahu to do this? i'm curious how receptive he has been to more days. we know he has stressed the intention to get right back to fighting after today. >> reporter: yeah, i mean, there is a challenge there. there is a military strategic challenge about returning to the fighting, returning to the war, if you like. but it's a good question to ask about pressure. there are still large numbers of hostages. and let's remember, not only the women and children, but also many many men and many people who have been serving with the israel defense forces, so there are still large numbers to be released. look, i mean, the video that you saw there of those two of the 8-year-old and the 13-year-old, meeting their mom, and we were with their mom, just a few days ago, and the angst and the pain of trying to get your daughters back, i mean, that's the kind of pressure that prime minister netanyahu was under. so in a sense, i guess, if the thing is still working, and there are still people to get out. it's very difficult, isn't it, if you are israel to say we're going to walk away from that. but again, at some point, there's going to be a stage where things will get much more difficult, particularly, for example, when it comes to the men or the people who have been serving with the israeli military, and that, i think, is still a few days away. that's not very long. >> okay. again, two more names we are getting. last name is yakov orr and yaheil, added to the prior three we have just gotten. we have five names. we don't have the ages of the remaining two i have just announced yet but as we get more information, again, this is just coming in right now. let me ask you, monica, the president's role in these extension talks, we know how much he's been involved in the first pause taking effect the first four days, how about now with the extension, to whom has he been speaking? >> he has been in constant contact with counter parts, as has his top aides, an evolving conversation over the weekend, the president, when there was a snag in one of the groups of hostage releases, the white house says it was the president who got on the phone with the key leader in qatar to essentially have this conversation, to iron out what was essentially the hold up to make sure that went forward, and then yesterday we know that the president spoke with israeli prime minister netanyahu about this idea of a two-day extension to the temporary truce. we know that was a big conversation and something that the president was pushing for, in order to get more hostages out, and something that obviously israel was amenable to. they have pledged that the fighting could continue because they want to continue with their own military goals here as it relates to hamas. what's notable here, alex is that the white house, of course, is watching to see if more americans could perhaps be included in this list today or in the future lists. we know that at least there were going to be three americans, it seemed, who would qualify for the criteria of women and children. we saw yesterday that the 4-year-old, abigail, adon, who turned that age in captivity, being held by hamas after her parents were brutally murdered in front of her. she's the first american released and returned to family members. that leaves two women who maybe could be in the next few days a part of this conversation. but the white house has not wanted to weigh in on anything in advance when it comes to the specifics. they want to let this play out because it is of course so fragile, so fluid, and a very active situation. but the president has been on the phone throughout the holiday weekend over thanksgiving he was constantly being briefed and speaking, again, to counter parts and world leaders to try to make sure that the four-day agreement stayed in place, and then to continue this extension. and early today, the white house indicated that they would love to see that continue. they want to see another couple of days or even a longer amount to continue to get as many hostages out, and the president has really pledged that he will not rest until all of them can get out, and the flip side to this, alex, is they argue the longer the pause can go, of course, the more humanitarian aid can flow into gaza, and that has been a priority for this administration in recent days as well. >> monica alba, thank you so much for that. we have another conversation right now. joining us, former israeli prime minister ahud barak, your reaction, how positive is this for israel? >> it's positive. i cannot tell you another extension, another two days, it might take still a few days before it's over this stage. >> we have yet to hear definitively from israel that they have agreed to the extension. is that because they want to have all of those being released right now as we speak arrive in israel before they agree to anything? >> i don't think so. i think technical matters for sure. and agree to it as well. >> prime minister, who is benjamin netanyahu listening to right now? we know that the white house has played a very big role in the current cease fire deal, all of those who flew to israel to save the agreement from unraveling when it was in a precarious state last week. how responsive is the current prime minister to pressure from the key negotiators? >> the joke is he listens to his wife and elder son, but more seriously, he listens to our intelligence, to some other advisers, and hope he doesn't listen to politicians these days. >> but the extent to which he listens to those who are negotiating these deals for him, sir, you would think it would have to be a fair amount, notably, relative to the united states, with joe biden's personal involvement. i know that one day president biden spent time making 12 separate calls to him in one day during these negotiations. so he's spending time with these negotiators, certainly. >> i think we all have to be thankful to president biden for thanksgiving in nantucket, making sure that everything had been agreed. will be accepted on the hamas, in order to make sure. very thankful to him. i think that netanyahu is listening to the president, probably might not follow every accommodation of president. he's listening seriously. sometimes he is talking to his base more than to reality, but i think and hope that he listens very well to the american advice. >> what about word we're getting that there are those that are not serving held by hamas? the pentagon said the u.s. is lacking clarity on how many american hostages are being held by hamas, versus another group in gaza, perhaps like the palestinian islamic jihad. how concerning is this for the israelis that are being held right now? >> it is a real problem. we hold hamas to be responsible for every single individual, and to be best of my knowledge, hamas has enough leverage at this stage, over islamic jihad to convince them to speak to be more responsive when it comes to being ready to exchange the hostages. for sure it would become more complicated, when men, probably elderly people might be easier to relieve. but come to young men, especially soldiers, men and women, also some women soldiers. this will be the more complicated part of any thing. >> how would the israeli public view this extension deal that seems to be on the cusp at the beginning, if it were to fall apart, would it send a message that getting back to military operations is more important than saving these hostages at all costs? >> the public mind, the hostages is much more important than destroying the hamas. strategically speaking for israel it's much more important to destroy hamas. but the issue of the hostages is not more important but much more urgent. we need any opportunity, bring any individual we can bring back. and that's a priority of the public. everyone understands at the moment the deal is over or it stops. fighting really resume full scale, probably slightly different style, but full scale in order to complete the strategically essential mission of destroying both the military capabilities, as well as the government capabilities of hamas. >> i want to pick up on that with our final question because benjamin netanyahu has also said that israel has to, to your point, sir, demilitarize, but also deradicalize gaza before it can start rebuilding the strip. particularly that last part. is that goal even possible, and if not, what happens to gaza? >> i would not take netanyahu, he climbed down from several others in the last ten days or so, but the basics of what he said is true. we have to make sure that hamas will not govern the gaza strip, and it will not govern the gaza strip only if its military capability will be destroyed. destroyed. i think that the objective to fully complete might take longer time than we probably have, and that was created by lack of enough attention to the need to give the direction that could be completed in the time frame which is feasible. now we have to fight for more time, and we'll try to do it. i think the strongest hamas should be executed by israel, even if it faces certain rejection or certain kind of friction with our best friend, but at the same time, i have seen that we have to listen very carefully to the very kind of logical recommendation that we have heard from president biden, even in his article. that the objective should be to establish a multinational moderate soon kind of members of the axis of the moderate. egypt, jordan, saudi arabia, and so on. and they can take over the gaza strip from israel once our mission is completed, and taking it for limited time. they will prepare modified, strength and reinforced palestinian to take ahold of hamas, stay with them for several months and basically this is the wide vision. if you take netanyahu, he thinks that it won't work. that it's not the ideal situation. i'm confident that's the only viable option and should be followed and accepted by israel. >> and we will see if that advice is followed. former prime minister, ehud barak, thank you so much for your time. i want to reiterate the names of the first five of the 11 israeli hostages or we are not certain if they are all israeli. let me give you names of the first five we have confirmed those being sharon aloni cunio, emma aloni cunio, yuli, and 16-year-old sahar calderon. and eriz calderon. meantime, coming up, the dozens of hostages have been reunited with their families, those prior to today. 11 more hostages on their way back to israel. their journey to recovery is far from over. the nephew of one hostage will join us. what he says his aunt has endured. two more days and 20 more hostages, what the extension signals about diplomatic talks behind the scenes. but first, police arrested a 48-year-old man accused of shooting three college students of palestinian descent. the shooting in vermont. what police are saying about the attack. we're back in 60 seconds. ck we're back in 60 seconds is kitc.
