kissinger passed away at his home in connecticut yesterday. he was 100 years old. you are watching "fox and friends first" on thursday morning, i'm carley shimkus. >> todd: i'm todd piro. kissinger was a leading voice in major decisions impacting the united states and the entire world. >> i came to this country as a refugee from germany. so i have known in a way that native-born americans cannot experience what this country means to the downtrodden and to those who need a ray of hope. >> todd: griff jenkins has more on his life and legacy. >> griff: his strategic decision advised five presidents from nixon to trump, his firm kissinger associates made the announcement saying a respected american scholar and statesman died today in connecticut in his home. reaction from around the globe. secretary blinken praising his contributions from israel. >> set the standard for everyone who followed and in this job. few people were better students of history, even fewer people did more to shape history than henry kissinger. >> former secretary of state mike pompeo writing, henry kissinger was a model of service and a great american. from the day he came to the united states as a teen dr. kissinger served this great country and ep cooing america safe. the often controversial -- fled germany, came to america in 1938, became an american citizen in nee 43 and joined the army and received bronze star in world war ii. after the war, he earned bachelors, masters aphd from harvard and nixon appointed him in 1969 and he served as secretary of state serving nixon and ford. he's noted for using tension with the soviet union and establishing u.s. diplomatic relations with china. former president george w bush saying this, america has lost one of the most dependable and distinctive voices with the passing of henry kissinger. he counseled many. dr. kissinger is survived by his wife, two children and grandchildren, henry kissinger dead at 100. >> todd: thank you. bring in robert charles, assistant secretary of state for former president george w bush. your reflections on the life and legacy of henry kissinger? >> you know, todd and carley, kissinger is almost hard to put into a sound bite, he was a titanic figure in the 19th century as your reports have indicated, guiding and help shape major issues for decades. he had four or five stand-out qualities and more than that, four or five issues he really defined. the end of the vietnam war, some blamed him not ending it faster and the paris accords, his work, why he got the noble peace prize. he did open china and really modern china wouldn't be there today without kissinger, for better and worse. he invented diplomacy and october of '73, you had the yom kippur war and egyptian troops were tangled with israeli troops and he went back and forth between egypt and israel to tidy up and get that ended and his capstone in many ways was datante, idea he could apply ideas he studied at harvard, the balance of super power or big power or great power and apply to soviet union and the united states. although henry kissinger is rightly revered as a tactician and extraordinary thinker, he also frankly was not ronald reagan and ronald reagan blew the corners off that box and said we have to call the soviet union an evil entity and take action accordingly. he was controversial, but he was also titanic. >> carley: he was born in germany as an orthodox jew and his family fled nazi germany for the united states and he became a naturalized citizen. the start of his life was marked by antisemitism and shortly before his death, i'm sure he saw this new wave of antisemitism in the united states because of everything going on in israel. how do you think -- how do you think he would view the two main global conflicts taking place in israel and also in ukraine? "new york post" op ed pointed out this is exact opposite approach taken by martin luther king. he aimed for orderly protest to convince people and speak to humanity of all this. that is not happening here at all. >> 300,000 people came and it was peaceful and strong and powerful message. they sent police and america and israel's message was sent not like we see in new york. i believe most of them -- my opinion. >> carley: that comparison is spot on, when you think about how many people peacefully protested together in washington, d.c. and what we're seeing in new york city and cities across the country with pro-palestinian protesters. how do you feel about mayor eric adams and how he is handling it? >> he clearly expressed sympathy to israel and his pro-israel stance. i would like nypd to be more forceful in terms of arresting, everybody should be equal under the law. i participated in many celebrate israel parades and everything was very peaceful -- in the world. >> carley: yeah. let's talk about the war itself, there is reporting president biden got on the phone with prime minister netanyahu a few days ago and said, you can't operate in the south of gaza the same way you are in the north because that is where palestinian people are. how do you feel about that cautious approach the president warned the prime minister to take? >> sure. so thanks for having us on this early in the morning, appreciate it. the issue at my campus, hunter college, have been profound. i have a good friend from high school, no longer attends one of his classes because the environment is so unsafe. we have teachers who teach english and other subjects that you will see them handing out material for no other reason than to bring it up and they target students in class. basically bringing that up in a hostile environment puts all eyes on anybody visibly jewish and they get stared at and called mean things and harassed online is a regular occurrence. students have gone after me because i've been vocal on this network and in general, which i don't mind, i'm going out and speaking publicly. it has caused others to not feel comfortable about what they are experiencing. we have students who basically can't function properly in class environment because they feel threatened and that is affecting their work and ability to function whether extracurricular or other activities. it has been damaging on the homefront. >> todd: these administrators have an obligation when they receive your tu i guess dollar to educate you and keep you safe in an environment where you can feel like you can safely study what you want to study to then get a job afterward. it is amazing they have lost thought of this. why are university leaders so sensitive to students who support terrorist and so scared to stand up to antisemitism? >> yeah, thank you so much for having me on. over a month ago i asked university administrators whether or not penn allows for "pro-terrorist rallies" on campus and i was met, i don't know, we'll get back to you. it's been over a month and 10 follow-up e-mails and i don't know what the answer is. until on monday, when a student was recorded three blocks from campus called the october 7 massacre glorious, said, i want all of you to hold that feeling in your hearts, never let go of it, channel it through every action you take, bring to the streets simple this someone on penn's campus others can feel safe? >> lawrence: good morning, the big debate is tonight. ron desantis against gavin newsom and it is really, we call it the red state versus blue state because both candidates will have the opportunity to present their agenda and defend their record. florida is a swing state, more trump country, really all of georgia is trump country. republicans lost two senate seats. it is interesting to see if some of them are buying what newsom is selling or do they want more of the desantis approach that is in florida? >> todd: you heard carley's interview with two people that will vote, they live in california and florida. do you think that ultimately, end of the day, the views they express are what candidates talk about or are they going to try to dodge and weave, and bob and weave. a lot of stuff if i'm gavin newsom, i want to avoid. >> lawrence: it is clear the mama bears of america really started to take the reigns back from the state back in 2020 because they were upset, they discovered things their kids were being taught and they have not given it back to government ever since. be careful with gavin newsom, he has this way of presenting ideas and defending bad policy while still saying that he understands you. he is a crafty politician, very obama-esque, and there is a danger there. the record is the record and he'll be pressed on that, let's see what he does. >> carley: unemployment rate in california is 4.8 and in florida 2.8. million people left california and 70,000 moved to florida. something i find surprising real clear politics approval rating for ron desantis has him at 35%. >> lawrence: yeah, and i think honestly, a lot of that approval rating came from when he decided to declare he was going to run for president. as candidates have gone back and forth, his record in florida has not been highlighted, as well. once he starts going back to the record of florida and why people decided to move to florida, that is his best thing. when you go against a goliathlike donald trump, expect hits to happen. that is why his approval rating has went down. >> todd: there is an elephant in the room, by elephant, i meet donkey, symbol of democrats. why is gavin newsom doing this debate? obviously not. >> todd: tudor, my second most important line of this to follow up on jim jordan say his first one is the line that says the following: these payments did not appear to correspond to any services rendered. that, to me, is really the crux of all of this. all these foreign entities, speespecially china paid hunter biden a lot of money and to do, what? >> right, exactly. again, we have to talk about the fact that his history was very storied. he had quite a history with drugs, with alcohol, with prostitutes. this was not a man who at that point in his life was capable of providing anything from a business standpoint. sad as that is, he really wasn't in that position. and to have somebody who, let me tell you this is not from the oversight committee. this is something the oversight committee found. so these are people outside of the republicans that came and said look, there is a really serious situation. at the time i believe he was -- he had been vice president. this was 2018. i think that this came out. this is before this all started -- this investigation started. they said this is a situation where one of the most powerful men in the country, his son has been compromised. we need to be aware of this. and, yet, democrats are still sweeping this under the rug. if i were the democrats or the republicans right now. i would be saying who are the other family members?
