thank you for joining us on another busy monday night. in the wake of last week's verdict, as alarming as it is, it's not surprising how donald trump and all his acolytes have been spending their time. attacking the system that held them accountable with escalating ginger's rhetoric targeting everybody from d8 alvin bragg, the judge, and the americans who served as jurors. trump and his buddies are claiming, once again, that the system must be rigged. if their claims of a rigged justice system couldn't be further from the truth, lucky for us, former u.s. attorney is standing by to set the record straight. governor pritzker will join me to talk about the republicans about party over country. what democrats should be doing in this moment. amy walter will break down the political implications of this for november. first, i want to start with a thought experiment. about this whole bricked argument trump is spewing out there. let's consider we live in an alternate universe. i believe my colleague rachel maddow causes birth two. the one donald trump is pushing in response stress 34 felony convictions. the gist of his argument is the department of justice is a partisan mob on a which one. trump's is president biden is behind his prosecution to, quote, wound him before the november election. if that were true, and to be clear, it is not true, things would probably look different. for starters, the justice department doesn't have anything to do with this case. it was located with the new york where the crime took place. manhattan district attorney ellen break who brought the case doesn't even work for president biden or the department of justice. the decision was his and his alone. furthermore, if biden's doj was acting as an anti-republican racket, they would be doing a terrible job. after all, the doj, indicting a lot of democrats these days like democratic senator bob menendez of new jersey who is currently on trial facing federal corruption charges. or democratic congressman henry clair who was federally indicted on bribery and money laundering charges. or, the president's son, hunter biden, whose trial began today. in that case, president biden and the doj bent over backwards to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. they held over the u.s. attorney david weiss so he can continue investigating the case after biden took office. last year, the attorney general promoted david weiss to special counsel status which gave him even more authority after a potential plea deal involving hunter fell apart. a month after the promotion, he indented -- indicted hunter pronounced charges he filled out while purchasing a gun six years ago. just step back and imagine if the circumstances were reversed. obama appointed u.s. attorney had been investigating don jr. in 2016. do you really think the trump administration would've kept him and given him more power? no. the doj has been -- not been weaponize against trump and republicans. alvin bragg has not done a partisan which one. he could've chosen to bring up the case as soon as he took office, and he took a lot of criticism at the time for not doing that. instead, he took his time to build a strong case of his own and it paid off. let's be real. if trump had been acquitted, alvin bragg would have respected the decision. the conclusions the jury of 12 every day many women came to. if donald trump is worried about things looking rick, he might want to start with a legal strategy. a new report, some activity to say the least is fishy. according to the report, quote, nine witnesses against former president trump have received significant financial benefits including large races from his campaign, severance packages, new jobs, and a grant of shares and cash in his media company. of course, to the ex-president, equal justice under the law means one thing for him and another for everybody else. preet bharara knows a thing or two in the legal system. served as attorney for the southern district of new york and he joins me now. i want to start with the overall point i was making. you were a federal prosecutor under the last democratic -- explain how the ridiculous these claims are. if there's anything i missed, please add it in. >> you were pretty comprehensive. good to be with you. it's perfectly legitimate for people to have arguments about and give their opinions about the nature of the evidence, the strength of the evidence, the rulings by the judge whether or not they are appealable issues. this society conspiracy theorizing that goes on, it stretches every bit of credulity a normal person would have. that the areas you outlined at the start, is joe biden who is the commander-in-chief and president as all this power that he is using to be a puppeteer of someone who doesn't even work in the federal system. he is pulling the strings of alvin bragg to get him to bring the case, causing him to win the case and personalize this power and doesn't do anything about his own justice department who today is bringing a case beginning a trial against his own son. if there's one thing we know about joe biden, i think it's the case that he loves his son more than he wants to hurt donald trump. his erstwhile and future political competitor. next time you have someone on the show as a republican, asked him, isn't it true that joe biden has the power constitutionally to fire the special counsel? the answer would be yes. isn't it true biden has a power constitutionally to pardon and advance his son and spare him from the spectacle? he does, and he did not do those things. the idea that a person who is exercising his authority to protect to some is otherwise a puppeteer of a local prosecutor in manhattan borders on ludicrous and absurd. >> i want to touch on something you said. david weiss, he kept him on. he didn't have to do that. there were other moments where he has i had to keep him in the job. we do not know what will happen in the outcome of this case. as you just mentioned, alvin bragg, he does not work for joe biden. does not work for the department -- it does not work that way. he does not direct them. >> even people in the justice department work at some remove, orders from the president. i was fired by former president trump in part because i refuse to speak to him in march 2017 because it is inappropriate for a sitting united states attorney who has jurisdiction over his company, his foundation and other things, to talk to him without communicated with by the attorney general of the u.s. there's independence of the justice department which is triple or quadruple or infinite when talking about a local prosecutor who is elected by the people of manhattan. not appointed by the president of the united states. >> it's important for people to know and understand. if doj officials, in the street, i would move in the other way to avoid them. i want to ask you about, you have dealt with juries, you have dealt with the totality of the judicial system. i have been trying to highlight how dangerous these attacks on people participating including the jurors. none of whom have come out, and i hope they do not, tell me for those who work in the legal system, how dangerous this is and concerning when you hear these attacks, not just from trump with the enable those around him? >> it is terrible. there is a legitimate place for good-faith debate and criticism of judicial rulings and arguments made by the defense or prosecution. people on the left legitimately, i am one of them, in my podcast and elsewhere, criticize legitimacy of the supreme court and talk about whether or not sam alito clarence thomas should recuse themselves from -- that's open debate. people who have a problem with judge merchan not recusing himself, you can have the argument the court of appeals will have the final word. attacking jurors is a bridge too far. a prosecutor would've said, and i said, we did not win every case we brought, alvin bragg would've taken in stride an acquittal in this case. the rational thing to have done , you can fight in the court of appeals, see you disagree with the jurors decisions but we created a climate -- not you and i, but trump and his supporters created a climate in which it's acceptable to talk about attacking jurors and putting their safety in jeopardy. it is an unusual thing. the white-collar case does not involve violence. keeping the jurors anonymous is a function of donald trump and his supporters. it's not a good thing. >> that's an important thing to remember. there's a reason we do not know their names. i want to ask about this propublica piece, trump funneling money and benefits to witnesses in this case which seems to raise red flags. benefits from his campaign. extra bonuses. it raised red flags to me but i wonder what you made of it. >> i do not know. is rings hollow. it rings true. in a more insidious level. trump is known to have interfered in cases before. he is known to send messages of social media to witnesses who will be against him either admonishing them not to be against him or suggesting there was something good in it for them if they would be for him. he's done that before. the question of whether he is engaged witness tampering has been raised before. there are interesting issues raised by the article based on the timing of benefits given to folks. it's a difficult thing for a prosecutor to prove there was jury tampering based on what was happening and reported so far. i take a moment to examine them further and see if there's other reporting and investigation that follows. it's troubling and not surprising. >> troubling, not surprising. more we need to know. the other thing i want to ask, nearly every single republican official are far too many is taking the opportunity to attack the bird again rule of law. yesterday on meet the press, tom cotton seemed reluctant to even contempt, threats against jurors. i want to play that. >> since the verdict, there's been a spike in violent rhetoric online toward the jurors including calls to publish their address of physical attacks. which you contend those attacks? >> i don't know what obscure websites of going to >> i hope every juror is stephanie ruhle -- doxxed may god strike them dead. we will and they will pay. >> again, i will always say that violence has no place for politics. i don't know what obscure account you found a social media. >> it wasn't a trick question i think from peter to condemn violence or threats against jurors. i am trying to wrap my head around, what does it tell you that a sitting senator is hesitant to condemn these calls for violence? >> i don't know. i cannot put myself in the mind of a u.s. senator and that particular senator. if someone has an aspiration to be vice president or cabinet member remember the supreme court all of which are not on viable prospects for someone like him and others, you don't want to get on the wrong side of donald trump. donald trump's rhetoric i think is the model here for everyone is talking about it. it is performative. it is dangerous when talking about separating out good-faith criticism of the judge or the prosecutors and defense lawyers and jury. have not seen that before. there are decisions made of the country inconsequential cases including the o.j. simpson case 30 years ago. people disagreed with that and i do not remember people talking about her seeming to accept the idea violence against those jurors. it's something we haven't seen that much of before and it's dangerous and improper. >> preet bharara, thank you for joining me. , illinois governor talking about what democrats should be focusing on now that the guilty verdict is behind us. our conversation is coming out. when i sat down with my next guest last fall, he seemed to have a reasonable request from his republican colleagues across the aisle. >> i know great republicans out there who have not spoken up yet but who believe, as i do, that donald trump is dangerous. >> do you expect they will speak out? >> i know there are people afraid and that's what donald trump hopes. there are republicans that need to stand up and call it out and i would like to see that sooner rather than later. >> if you have a public platform and you think something is dangerous, call it out. that's reasonable sounding. that's what leaders are supposed to do no matter your political persuasion. what we have seen over and over including recent days is not the kind of courage at all. we have seen far too many republicans continue to echo trump's attacks. and studying -- instead of calling out his dangerous -- the overwhelming majority are amplifying it. not the profile encourage my next guest had in mind. what is his message to those republicans now when what should democrats be focusing on five months out from the november election? i went to bring in illinois governor pritzker. thank you for taking the time. i enjoyed our conversation back then and i was reflecting on it today. when i spoke with you a few months ago, you said which is reasonable, you hoped republicans would call trump out on his dangerous rhetoric. instead, many are amplifying his attacks on the justice system, especially the last couple of days. it might not surprise you, but what's your message to all of them now in this moment? >> they should begin by renouncing the violence and the jailing that trump is calling for. you have heard a lot of his supporters, congressman from george's, calling for the death penalty or jailing of people who do not support donald trump. it is divisive. what they're doing is now taking sides with donald trump. that is the part i think is un- american. this idea that we are going to have a country where you can no longer speak out with your views as a democrat or even as a republican. i know many are afraid as i said months ago. the idea that now you will be threatened with violence. that's a challenge i think the american public will stand up to. it will call to americans who really want a country where you are allowed to stand up and vote as you want and say as you wish in the political arena, standing against that being for violence. that is un-american. >> absolutely. marjorie taylor greene said earlier today and then get your reaction. >> we are literally a banana republic. the american people don't give a [ bleep ] >> she -- her comment, we should shut down the government over a guilty verdict. this is an attack on the system and the rule of law. it's happening in washington. you are not in washington, but i felt the need to call it out. >> the american people have a choice to make. it is clear. a president in office who is trying to truly make progress. there's a convicted felon running against him who is trying to make bail. these are choices that americans are going to have in november. i think the campaign from now until november needs to be a reminder of who these two people are, and particularly, that donald trump, a convicted felon, adjudicated is a serious contender for the presidency? i think that will be rejected by a majority of voters. >> appoint the campaign is made is that trump is a convicted felon. he has been convicted of these crimes. it will not be central to their message. i believe they need to connect to how things will impact the american people. i think you are as well. talk how much the message you think that should be. it's a historic moment in a dark way. what percentage should be about other issues that people are thinking about out there in their homes? >> this will be decided in november at the ballot box. what will drive people to make their decision is what the stands are by the two candidates. let's talk about that. although before donald trump's name, convicted felon and adjudicated rapist. biden needs to remind people that he will preserve our freedoms. let's talk about reproductive rights. let's talk about workers rights and voting rights and civil rights. that is what joe biden has been fighting for and as president of the united states. who was on the other side? a guy who literally sent jobs overseas while he was president. he rejected science and the result of that is that hundreds of thousands more people died than should have been the covid- 19 pandemic. this is a former president who is a racist, a misogynist, a homophobe, xena foe. a person who does not represent the values of american families and american people. we have to make that very clear from now until november. >> one of the issues we have talked about is abortion rights and you have been outspoken on abortion rights for the totality of the time everybody has been fighting against dobbs being overturned. 20% of people in the recent times pole blame joe biden for jobs being overturned. i am asking you how does the president and how does a party convince the public the people who think that, that that is not the case? >> it is messaging. reminding people, it's clear what the choices are. donald trump keep saying, not only is he opposed to abortion rights, he is also opposed to contraception. he is opposed to ivf. this is somebody who i think most americans would say is out of touch with modern american society. women should have the right to make decisions for themselves about their own futures and it's about their economic futures. it's about the future of their families. we are not just talking about poor single woman who may want to get an abortion. that is something that happens and we want to make that available. also about families and spouses who were making decisions about the future's other family. they may have children now and maybe trying to have more children with ivf. donald trump wants to cut that up. we got a hint of this extension of the antiabortion movement in the decision that was written by current justice thomas when he talk to you going after contraception. going after lgbtq writes. going after ivf. we knew this was coming, and now we have a presidential candidate who used to be president was proven he believes in the philosophy. he appointed the suit -- the three support supreme justices who put dobbs in place and we know what the future of women's rights are going to be as a result of a donald trump second presidency. >> i know a lot of democrats out there watching are looking forward to the convention and all the speeches. there are a lot of concerns expressed about potential for protests, potential for violence , hopefully not. can you tell me about the preparations happening in chicago and how concerned you are about that? >> let's remind ourselves that the last convention in chicago was in 1996. it was a phenomenal convention. i think i've been to every single convention since i was able to vote and that 1996 convention here was the best, if you ask me. the convention we are about to put on, even better. we will show of the values and diversity of the democratic party. the tremendous, amazing cans of advancements that have been made because of joe biden and his policies. they were bipartisan bills that allowed us to build the infrastructure, to invest in the chips and science act, bring climate change policies that are good for the american people. that will be on display at the convention. in terms of safety in the city, we have every level of law enforcement from the secret service and fbi all the way down to illinois state police, chicago police, even milwaukee police. our sheriff and sheriff deputies on duty to make sure everybody has a safe and productive time, secure time, while in chicago. there will be protest. we will stand up for the right for people to express their first amendment rights, but we will make sure everybody has the ability to enjoy the city and to get to the convention safely. i think the american people are going to see the best of the democratic party inside the convention hall. >> nowhere better than chicago in the summer. thank you for taking the time. next, donald trump and his campaign think they can use his felony conviction to court black voters. it's another racist ploy you can add to his long list. i will explain. explain. if you're one of the millions of people with diabetes who suffer from low and high blood sugar, dexcom g7 is one of the easiest ways to take better control of your diabetes. my blood sugar would suddenly spike or really go low out of nowhere. it was really scary. (announcer) dexcom g7 helps protect against highs and lows. call now! president biden has said many times that he owes his election in 2022 black voters. it is true. black voters have been the democratic party's most loyal constituency and election cycle after election cycle which is part of what joe biden is made out of reach to the black community a priority to earn their vote. however, trump suddenly thinks he has a chance to make inroads with the black community. why? because according to trump in his mind, his criminal record is a big selling point. listen to what he said in february the black conservative federation annual gala. >> i got indicted a second and third time and fourth time. a lot of people said, that is why the black people like me because they had been hurt so badly and discriminated against. they viewed me as i am being discriminated against.'s been pretty amazing. >> trump and his campaign didn't stop saying that. they stepped up that pitch, the one you heard, and the wake of his conviction. never mind that he is clearly indulging a completely racist stereotype. he thinks his guilty verdict makes him more relatable to black voters. it's pretty rich given trump -- for a range of reasons/he has a history of overt racism dating back to the earliest days of his career. the federal government sued trump for allegedly discriminating against black apartment seekers in the 1970s. in the 1980s, a startup racial animosity during the trial of the central park five who were innocent, by the way. who can forget trump was a leading voice of the birther conspiracy theory, baselessly claiming obama was not an american citizen. after that, he did not stop. he refused to renounce david duke in the when he endorsed his campaign. recently had dinner at mar-a- lago with the known white supremacist and sympathizer. he used racist attacks and slurs against black protesters holding him to account. executors. this week, producer worked on the apprentice broke his silence about what he witnessed filming the show. the story is literally 20 years in the making. literally. that's a long you have to wait for his nda to lapse. how trump refused to allow a black contestant win the first season of the apprentice. as he is describing this, trump, he referred to the contestant using the n-word. there are decades, decades of evidence of trump showing and telling us exactly who he is. there is no evidence he has changed at all. donald trump was responsible for breaking up a crowd of peaceful black lives matter protesters in 2020 and he called them thugs and inquired about shooting them. it is especially disturbing all of that, but given trump later gave maga extreme is to foment political violence on his behalf. he called the january 6 insurrectionist very special on that day. he now wants to reward them for storming the rapist pardoning their crimes. that was not lost on president biden who pointed out trump's glaring double standard in a speech to black voters in pennsylvania. >> because insurrectionist to storm the capitol patriots. patriots. if reelected, he wants to pardon, quote, every one of them. think about this. what would happen if black americans had stormed the capitol? i don't think he was talking about pardons. >> president biden is right when a group of protesters looked different from trump, trump tweeted, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. trump showed who we was then and he hopes he -- they won't believe him or suddenly forget. coming up, the most unpredictable voting block in november may also be the one responsible for the outcome of the election. we will dive into the world of the double haters as they are called. she digs into this and other things, amy walter joins me after a quick break. ck brea hi. i'm gina. i was really upset at the way i had let myself go. my cravings were out of control. i had to do something. we all know it's important to take care of our health but it seems the trend is looking for a quick fix. and as a nurse it's really important to me what i put in my body. the main difference with golo is the way i felt. i wasn't jittery, my cravings went away. i felt satisfied and healthy and had tons of energy. give golo a shot you won't be sorry. shingles. some describe it as an intense burning sensation, or an unbearable itch. this painful, blistering rash can disrupt your life for weeks and could make it hard to be there for your loved ones. shingles could also lead to serious complications that can last for years. if you're over 50, the virus that causes shingles is likely already inside you. and as you age, your risk of developing shingles increases. don't wait. ask your doctor or pharmacist about shingles today. okay, everyone's vote matters but this selection will be one core lost in six or seven states. within those states, it's a smaller group of swing voters who will determine who will sit in the oval office come next january. central our group that has become known as the double haters. that is when name. they are people who are not excited about either candidate. political wrote double haters could be the linchpin in a possible biden victory. a new poll yesterday confirms they are fed up with donald trump's ongoing legal problems. according to nbc ipsos poll, two-thirds with unfavorable opinions of both candidates think trump should end his candidacy. of course, that doesn't mean they will turn out for president biden the there. that just means they may be turned off by the legal stuff. is amy walter point out out, the candidate his liabilities are most front and center in the fall is the likeliest loser. amy walter, editor-in-chief or cook political report joins me now. a lot of what i've learned about double haters, i have learned from reading you and the things you write. let's start with the basics. who are the double haters, percentage of voters are the? >> that's a good question. they mostly fall -- define themselves as independents. i talked to one poster, and the polling he is done, up to 40% of independents say they dislike both candidates. that's a significant -- >> is a bigger than normal? >> overall, in the swing state polling that we did about 2.5 weeks ago, what we found is 16% of voters can be in the category. i've seen polls up to 25% of all voters. it's a significant group. in 2016, it was between 13 and 14 overall so were little more than 2016. we know what happened in 2016 that those voters at the end were disproportionately for donald trump. part of the reason why, who the spotlight is on at the end matters more than anything, what were we talking about going into the weekend before the election? it was more emails, james comey, it was the spotlight dashes >> who the spotlight was on. >> you usually watch her candidate in the spotlight in the final days of the campaign, but in this case, both candidates would be happy if the spotlight were on the other candidate. specifically on the liability. >> let me ask about the demographics. as i understand, younger, more diverse. >> they don't identify as much with the party. in your previous piece about black voters, i think you have a lot of black voters who were singing, i don't see a reason for me to vote for joe biden. they are sitting in this uncomfortable place where they do not know if they will vote, why they should vote for biden. they are not necessarily over on the trump camp. you can put that into that category. many of these younger voters of color have felt disinclined to be part of the process for a long time. they do not feel like they have a place in our modern politics. they have not been excited and the candidates have not been speaking directly to their issues. >> there are so many different issues the parties want to talk about. democrats abortion rights. the biden campaign spent money. the trump team wants to talk about his legal issues. also about immigration and the border. what do voters want to hear about? >> we have been taking a deep dive into some of these voters who are not double haters but are undecided. a bigger sample of people who are undecided or falling into third-party. many of them, a portion is a critical issue for them. other group of voters where abortion is critical are people who do not show up in every election. you probably know them is drop off voters, less inclined to show up in every single election. abortion is a important topic to the. it might motivate them to actually come out and vote. i think that's why you are seeing so much of the advertising from the biden campaign by the focus on of the vote -- biden campaign talking about this issue. the economy is the second. that is something they are concerned about. >> on the economy because it just keeps popping as the number 1 issue including the recent harvard poll among young people. voters under 29. what is the message that -- is there a message clear they want to hear? >> i think the message is they want things not to cost as much, especially the cost of housing. this was what we found in our polling that was the most problematic for the president is you ask people what is your number 1 concern? the cost of living. okay. do you think the president has the ability to bring the cost of stuff down? overwhelming majority said yes. the president can do something about this. do you think joe biden can do that? no. do you think donald trump can? yes. when it comes down to it, things cost too much the president can do more than he is doing. he hasn't been able to follow through. donald trump can do there. that is why this conversation about unemployment and infrastructure is not breaking through. not because people do not like those things but because they want the cost of stuff to be less. >> we have a lot more to talk about. stay where you are. here you ar . for revolutionary support without underwires, and sizes up to a g-cup, find your new favorite bra today at knix.com ah, these bills are crazy. she has no idea she's sitting on a goldmine. well she doesn't know that if she owns a life insurance policy of $100,000 or more she can sell all or part of it to coventry for cash. even a term policy. even a term policy? the third party is on everyone's mind. >> they are sitting there not necessarily because they like the third-party candidate but because they don't like their other choices. many voters sitting on rfk or i will vote for a third party, i think those are dissolution voters. many of them would, on their face, look like democrats. again, younger voters of color. these are the people, women, that you would say, okay, these are voters that democrats can win over but why are they sitting in third-party? why are they undecided? i think it goes back to the main topic which is the economy. they are feeling frustrated. they are feeling frustrated about what they see has not happened under biden's tenure. they can't bring themselves to put themselves into the trump camp. this is a nice resting place for many. >> that -- they may not know. democrats down ballot and a number of they six or seven states are performing currently better than president biden. what does it tell you? are there lessons the biden campaign should take away? is it normal? >> we always think, especially the last couple of elections, the top of the ticket and bottom, senate races, have gone exactly the same way. susan collins the only senate candidate to inject in a state where the presidential nominee of a party did not win. you look at that and you say, if biden loses in some of these places, the democrats in the swing states cannot run either. where senate candidates are not getting that poll from the economic bad news that biden is, they may blame biden but not necessarily blaming democrats. republican candidates are not getting the benefit from republicans being the republican nominee but taking the toxicity associated with donald trump. that is from those independent voters. finally, the voters that do not show up, low propensity voters, they are not supporting biden that they are supporting right now the senate democratic senate candidates. you can look at that and say maybe they will get back to biden. these are voters who want to vote for democrats but they are unsure about biden. or they do not want to vote for biden. they are voting for the down ballot democrats as a check on donald trump. >> so many dynamics. >> and it's only june. >> you need to come back. thank you so much for joining me. house republican spent the day doing the same thing they have been doing for the past four years. attacking dr. fauci. i will explain why it's predictable but why it's unproductive and why it's dangerous. dangerous. hi, i'm jason. i've lost 228 pounds on golo. ♪ changing your habits is the only way that gets you to lose the weight. and golo is the plan that's going to help you do that. just take the first step, go to golo.com. her uncle's unhappy. i'm sensing an underlying issue. it's t-mobile. it started when we tried to get him under a new plan. but they they unexpectedly unraveled their “price lock” guarantee. which has made him, a bit... unruly. you called yourself the “un-carrier”. you sing about “price lock” on those commercials. “the price lock, the price lock...” so, if you could change the price, change the name! it's not a lock, i know a lock. so how can we undo the damage?
