Military families they are speaking to make, and what its like to be one of them. And so they speak obviously from their own personal experience. And, you know, we will tune in when the president starts speaking about what message he wants to send this memorial day. We know this has long been something that the first lady has made a priority. She, even as second lady, during the obama administration, working with the former first Lady Michelle obama, made working with and supporting military families a priority, a project that they made sure stayed at the forefront of the administration. And thats something they are continuing to do memorial day weekend. Lets listen flou to the first lady, dr. Jill biden. And we must do everything we can to help them carry the weight of their grief, and always, always honor their service. Ten years ago first Lady Michelle obama and i created joining joining forces. And this work continues to be one of my Top Priorities today. We are going to make sure that our military and veteran families, caregivers and survivors have what they what you need to survive. Our military is a Community Bound together by love, love for our country, love the men and women who serve beside you or the Service Members in your life. And love for the communities that you all have built together. Its time that our nation matches that devotion. May God Bless You all, our troops and their families. And now im excited to welcome our next speaker, brittany bean. In addition to being a mom of three, a veteran herself and a fellow teacher, brittany has navigated much of this pandemic while her husband, major Nathaniel Bean is deployed to afghanistan. With brittanys service, this is their familys seventh combined deployment. Brittany, like so many moms, i know that you are the rock of your family. Okay. Weve been listening to the First Lady Jill Biden speak to other military families. She herself one of them. Talking about all the shared sacrifice that families make we will tune back in to Joint Base Langlois as soon as the president starts speaking. All right. Lets move to the big vote today, republicans are going to wlok the bill to create a commission to find the truth what happened at the u. S. Capitol january 6th. 554 to 35. I think we have the faces and names of the republicans voted for the commission. Six Susanne Collins with lisa murkowski. Mitt Romney Ben Sasse and rob portman voted for moving forward with the commission. Ten votes were needed to create the Bipartisan Commission, though. Yes, and it also should be noted. Fear or feelty to donald trump, the republican minority prevented the American People from getting the full truth about january th. The republican minority prevented the senate from debating the bill. This vote made it official. Donald trump ace big lie has now fully enveloped the Republican Party. Shame on the Republican Party for trying to sweep the horrors of the day under the drug because they are afraid of donald trump. Cnn chief Congressional Correspondent manu raju following this. As victor said six senators voted in favor of getting information, finding the truth. Nine senators did not vote at all. How did they explain that. Nine republican senators didnt vote. Two democratic snorps didnt vote. They were reaching out to offices. We have gotten explanations others have not gotten back to us as of course the beginning of the holiday weekend. There is a recess next week and some may have decided their vote wouldnt have made a difference at the end of the day and left town. One republican senator actually who left would have voted for this. Pat toomey of pennsylvania, one of the seven voting to convict donald trump at his Impeachment Trial. And the second Impeachment Trial his office said he had a Family Commitment and couldnt attend but he would have voted to move forward. The two Democratic Senators who were not there patti murray of wanting state and also Kirsten Sinema of arizona. Both would have been likely yes votes. That would have still been short of the 60. I asked senator Chuck Schumer about the next steps here but also about the two Democratic Senators who skipped and his reaction to that. You said that youre open to a select committee in the house. Would you encourage your chairman in the senate to investigate this, number one . And number two two members of your caucus skipped todays vote. Is that okay with you given how important a vote this was . Okay im not getting into individual members of our caucus. We always made sure wed have enough votes on all issues. On the first issue, i have a lot of faith already, Senator Klobuchar and peters are looking extensively what went on january 6th. I have faith in what theyre doing. Theyre working together and occasionally reach out to other committees like intelligence where they need expertise there too. So he was talking about an investigation that is happening already in the Senate Rules Committee and Senate Homeland security committee. They have a report expected to come out first week of june looking at security on the Capitol On January 6th that day. He wouldnt talk about Additional Investigation that is might be reached. I tried to press on that but he wouldnt answer. He did express support for a house led select Committee Going forward. He said better to investigate than not at all. And the democrats in the house are keeping that option open. Expect that to be the next step here. Necked have a vote, set up the select committee. But democrats are on the committee which would be differenten than the outside Commission Split 50 50. Thank you very much for that Breaking News on capitol hill. Meanwhile we want to bring you back to President Biden speaking at Joint Base Langlois in houston. Around the world. And you are simply stated you are the back bone of the country. Youre the back bone of the country. And although our son beau was the Attorney General of the state of delaware, and had spent nine months in kosovo as assistant u. S. Attorney trying to set up their criminal Justice System and i might say i can do this with the military. Im going to brag about him a little bit. He is the only foreigner to have a War Memory Yam erected to him in kosovo just below ft. Bonsdale and the first highway they built named at joseph r. Beau biden memorial highway. He was proud as hell of his work. But then he had contracted an exposure to a virus in when he was in kosovo and in turkey as a civilian. And he came back with a problem. But he kept going to walter reed. I couldnt understand why. They finally found that prevented him from having what they call bamboo spine. But he kept going back. I couldnt understand why. I thought i knew why. But he went back because he was trying to get an exemption to be able to join the United States army. He was a sitting Attorney General. As all my colleagues governor and bobby scott, and congresswoman, they all know, is that when you do that he joined the National Guard. And his unit deployed. And he wanted to deploy to iraq with them. So he literally had to give up his seat temporarily. He couldnt have any Business Done as you National Guard folks know. You cant do any business with the state if in fact youre now federal property. And so he gave up the seat. And had the courage to appoint a fellow who had been the Republican Attorney general as Attorney General while he while he went. The proudest thing he ever did. The proudest thing he ever did. And he spent a year in iraq. And it was it was one of the great honors of his life to do it. He won the bronze star the Conspicuous Service award like many of you have. But he never talked about it. I remember we had an event at the white house. I shouldnt be talking so much about my son but im not going to apologize for it. We had an even for iraqi veterans at the white house. And the president without telling me and jill invited beau to be there with another 75 soldiers and sailors and airmen. But he wouldnt wear any decorations. And the general called him and said put put them on now. Swear to god. Without of the vp residence he wouldnt wear them until then. Thats the first time i saw the bronze star on him. When im telling you that, he is like a lot of you. You do your duty. You dont expect anything for it except get a little respect. You deserve so much more. You deserve so much more. And, you know, im honored to be joined today by Governor Northam and by two great represent he was of the commonwealth, Congresswoman Lori and congressman scott. And i want to thank thank you for all you do to represent these service veterans, because they are devoted to you. Their family members, caregivers, survivors, all call virginia home. Im especially honored to share the stage with brittany and jared and nathan and margaret kathryn. I love those barrettes in her hair, man. Look at her looks like she is 19 years old like a little lady with her legs crossed. Brittany you are doing triple duty as a veterans, Military Spouse and teacher. And, kids, thank you for being there for your mom. I can remember all those times when all of you remember the spouses when your husband or wife were deployed. Every morning you wake up, you say the little extra prayer drinking your coffee. You spend a little more time wondering. And, you know, you make up 1 of the population defending 99 of the rest of us. And we owe you. But you do your job so gracefully. You hardly ever say anything about what youre doing. But it matters. It matters to your families for that time were sitting across from an empty Charity Kitchen table, the dining room table, those birthdays or christmases, or holidays where theyre gone. You know, there is a famous english poet who said they also serve who only stand and wait. Also serve who only stand and wait. I know major bean, having been deployed to afghanistan during the pandemic has only made everything much harder during the pandemic. I want to thank you so much, your entire familys service to our country. Youre all incredible. You so underestimate how important you are. There is nothing that jill and i enjoy more than spending time with our troops here and abroad. Youre stationed here in the United States or deployed around the world, ive been in and out of iraq and afghanistan over 20 i think 25 times. And ive seen i wish everyone could see what you do when youre there. I wish they could see every day how you saddle up, jump in that cockpit, just see no, youre just doing your job. Not to mention all the troops ive had to chance to visit in the middle east, europe and indopacific recently. Weve traveled all over. Jill traveled all over with me on her own visits to Service Members in iraq. I think she is the only second layer lady to ever go into a middle of a war zone because she wanted to be there and see it. I always want you to know, always, that the issues you and your family are facing we need to know how we can support you better. I mean it sincerely from the bottom of my heart, support you better. There is a reason for that. And i said, we bidens are proud to have family in the military. And our son beaus service was among the achievements as i said, he was most proud of. My heart swelled seeing him in uniform. When i went into iraq, i was there for five times when he was in baghdad. And i i remember first time i saw him he had his name was hurn. He said what in the hell happened . He said i didnt want anybody giving me special privileges because my department is vicepresident. He got special perming to have a different name tag. I listened to him talk about the needs people had when he got back home. About all the folks he served with who came back with post traumatic stress. And he was back being Attorney General having to deal with it. But here is the point. You do so much. And you ask for so little. You know, our experience is a fraction of what so many of you and your families have gone through. A family like brittany and her kids. Youre the absolute best america has to offer. Our heart, our honor, your solid steel spine. My message to all of you is quite simple. Thank you. Thank you. Not thank you for your service. Just thank you for who you are. Because its contagious. Thank you for choosing the Selfless Service to your country. I know we have mostly soldiers and airmen in attendance today. But there can be a lot of friendry rivalries on a base. Each branch has its own Proud Cherished tradition and culture. I know how proud langlois is of the premier f22 raptor wing. I asked. Im the Commander In Chief why the hell cant i command you go up in one. But i cant. Ft. Ustes primarily used by the navy all about as joint as it can possibly get. Every day more than 20,000 member of the air force and army with civilian and earn personnel come to work with a shared mission no matter which branch of our armed forces you represent. Youre part of the greatest Fighting Force in the history of the world. Thats not hyperbole. The greatest Fighting Force in the history of the world. Youre integral to the most powerful nation in the world. Theres been no army, navy or air force ever like you or marines. Mere at joint Base Langlois Ustes you enable the success of our mission around the world. You provide intelligence support and air power. You ensure our soldiers and airmen are ready, trained to deploy in the cocoms around the world. Including this year adhering to covid19 Safety Protocols and quarantines before troops ship out in order to minimize spread of the virus. I know that many of you deployed yourselves probably more than once. Over the past 20 years our Volunteer Force and our military families have made incredible sacrifices in this country. Early in my term as vicepresident i traveled overseas id meet servicemen and women who deployed the fourth, fifth, sixth time. Remember going into baghdad you had to fly in wed do the circular deals we wouldnt get shot at or wouldnt get hit. I walked up in the cockpit of a Silver Bullet they had me in. I asked there were five people in the cockpit, looked master as well. How many of this is your first tour . Nobody raised their hand how many second tour in nobody raised their hand. Third tour. Two raised their hand. Fourth tour, two raised their hand. Fifth tour, one raised their hand. No other war have you gone in, served, got back up again and go back again, and again, and again. Once. Once. Wiping the blood off the seat of a humvee is enough to get you focused. But to saddle up next time and go back, and back again, youre incredible. Youre incredible. The country, they owe you. And this time they are more appreciative. In my generation you didnt come home and get off the airplane in a uniform in an airport come back from vietnam people treated with you respect but they have no idea the sacrifices you make in theater. As we bring we get close to bringing down the longest war drawdown in american history, the troop presence in afghanistan. I want to recognize the significance of what all of you, the United States armed forces accomplished in the past 20 years. You went to a afghanistan with a clare purpose to get the people that attacked us in 9 11 and prevent algd using it as a base to attack america in the future. We achieved that. You achieved that. Year after year deployment after deployment america pursued the Terrorist Threat through some of the most unforgiving terrain on the planet. I have now had the pleasure from the fobs up in the konar valley down south looking at all the poppy fields, and all in between. Its one god for saken landscape, but you all just showed up and did your job, and to help make sure there hasnt been another attack from afghanistan for the last 20 years. You never gave up until we delivered justice to osalma bin laden. I got criticized after 9 11 for saying well follow the Son Of A Bitch to The Gates Of Hell thats exactly what you did. You got him. And now as we draw down were also focusing on the urgent work of rebuilding over the horizon capabilities allowing us to take after algd if they return to afghanistan. But the focus on the threat has metastasized the greatest threat is not from afghanistan, its going to be five other regions of the world that have significantly more presence than both algd and organizational structures including isis. Were going to update our Security Stance and turn our forces to the threats dominating our future, to assure the security of the American People for decades to come. But well never, ever, ever forget the terrible cost that we paid as a nation. Many of you likely lost friends or colleagues in afghanistan and iraq. I know this is personal to you. Especially as you head into memorial day weekend. We as a nation will always remember and pay tribute to knows we lost. After i announced my decision to end the war in afghanistan, the first thing i did was visit visit section 60 of Arlington National cemetery. Just walked through the head stones. Seen all those stones. Our son did not die in iraq. But he came back at an incredibly healthy young man and came back with a severe brain tumor, because his hooch was downwind from the burn pits. I dont know thats the reason. But he came home and it was just a matter of how long he would live. I still carry with me every single solitary day i and my staff or the last since the war began, i have my schedule in the back of my schedule it says, u. S. Daily troop update. U. S. Troops died in iraq and afghanistan, 6927. Not over 6,000. Total Fallen Angels across the board, over 7,000. Every one of these lives lost is a tragedy. An empty seat at the dinner table. A missing voice at the holidays. Every one of them left behind a whole community. Not just one, a whole community. We can never repay that debt. But i promise you this, to all the gold star families across the country, we will never, ever, ever forget each year memorial day offers us a chance to reflect on the enormity of the sacrifices generation after generation of americans has made. And the responsibilities that we bear, citizens bear, in return. Ive said many times it used to get me in trouble 25 years years ago, 30 years ago in the senate. America has many obligations. We only have one sacred obligation. The obligation is to our children and the elderly and many other things. But only one sacred obligation, is to prepare you when we send you into harms way with everything you need, car for your families when youre gone. And when you come home, care for you and your families and the needs that may be a consequence of the war. We owe it. We owe it to you. And we particularly owe it to the memories, to affirm The Very Best of what america stands for, to uphold honor and democratic values. They are the foundation of the strength of this nation. You know, i sometimes get criticized for saying what i deeply believe, having done this the bulk of my life. Were in a battle between democracies and autoocracies. The its more difficult for democracies to come together and reach consensus. Ive spent more time with president xi of china than any world leader has. For 24 hours of private meetings with him. With just an interpreter. 17,000 miles traveling between china and here. He firmly believes that china before the year 3035 is going to own america. Because autoocracies can make quick decisions. But america is unique. Of all the nations in the world, were the only nation organized based on an idea. Every other nation you can define by their ethnicity, geography, religion, except america. America is born out of an idea. We hold these truths to be selfevident, all men and women are created equal, endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, including life, liberty, et cetera. None of you get your rights from your government. You get your rights merely because youre a child of god. The government is there to protect those godgiven rights. No other government has been based on that notion. No one can defeat us except us. Its an idea that generation of patriots have fought and died for to defend it. I know thats a conviction that each and every day you all share. Thats why you joined up. Why youre running around danger when duty calls. Its my greatest honor it should not surprise anybody. It should be anybodys greatest honor in all of life to be able to serve as your Commander In Chief. No greater honor. So thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for spending this time with me today. And thank you for your commitment to our country. Because without you, as i said ill end where i began, you are the spine of america. The spine. I cant tell you how much it matters. I think you underestimate the consequence of mo you are and what you do. So thank you. May God Bless You. And may god protect our troops. Thanks. [ applause ] weve been listening there to President Joe Biden speak at joint Base Langlois Ustes with what sounded like great personal pride and gratitude to these Service Members and their families. On this eve of memorial day weekend. And he talked about the great pride that he had in his own son, beau biden, who served in the National Guard and went to iraq, and how much that meant to him, and how much the sacrifice of all of these families and every Service Member who has given the ultimate sacrifice means to him and to the United States. Yes. The president lost his son six years ago this weekend, may 30th, of 1250u li 2015 that he died of geo blastoma. The president saying to these men and women thank you not just for your service, but thank you for who you are. A lot of those remarks off prompter. Speaking personally. Sharing stories weve heard some before. But speaking about his relationship with his son, pride in his son and pride in the people he was speaking with today. And telling them we need to know. And i think he was speaking as a country. We need to know how to support military families better. And, you know, i think its a great reminder for all of us, so many of us think of memorial day as the Great American barbecue. But of course its really important to be reminded for all military families and all of us, of course, of the ultimate sacrifice so many gave for the rest of us. Absolutely. Sanctioned russia for one of the worst global hacks ever, the same group of kremlinbacked hackers committed another massive cyberattack. Microsoft flagged the infiltration, found that 150 Government Agencies think tanks, other organizations hit as well. Microsoft determined it started with the u. S. Agency for International Development and by gaining access to usaid the hackers sent out convincing looking fibering emails like this one on the screen users unknowingly click on it and unleash malware that opens a back door for cyberattacks. David sanger is cnns National Security analyst and National Security correspondent for the new york times. Great to see you, david. Is this your Garden Variety email hack . Or is this a sophisticated cyberattack. Its not especially sophisticated. I think there are many in the u. S. Government who would argue this was the kind of thing they see every day. But i think whats really important here alisyn is the context of it. So President Biden is going to be meeting Vladimir Putin in two and a half weeks in jgenevap pat of the in is the pace of the russian attacks on the United States of this kind, a much more Solarwinds Attack which got into both Government Agencies and many of the biggest companies. And whats interesting is that despite the fact that President Biden issued new sanctions, threw out diplomats and all that, the russian daily assault on u. S. Institutions just proceeds ahead. So clearly they havent gotten their arms around this. So then what works . Because the sanctions obviously havent worked. Lets add attempts to isolate russia from international community. That has not worked. What are they considering . What possibly could they do. Its a great question, victor. And theyre stuck here in a little bit of what in the cyber world they call the escalation trap. People use cyber and nations use cyber because they know that most countries are not going to take military action. Theyre not going to risk an escalation of a serious confrontation for a hack, even a very damaging one. And so its sort of a freefire zone. And what the russians are trying to do is over time get into enough american systems that basically the government no longer has confidence in the security of its own computer networks. And thats a really effective way of undercutting a country without risking a military response. And so President Biden is a little bit stuck, as his predecessors were. He said the other day he wanted a proportionate response, didnt want to provoke something bigger. But now he has discovered that the daily attacks, normal attacks just keep coming. David, in other words theyre not looking for any specific information. Theyre just trying to kind of infiltrate the system and spread chaos. And dont we have any fire walls against things like this on state Department Email . We do. But whats been interesting in recent times, alisyn, is that rather than try to go into the State Department which does have fire walls not terrible effective, the russians have been through them before. Theyre going into the software of American Contractors who are providing services to the u. S. Government. So solarwinds provided Network Management software, a lot of Companies Use it. The government uses it. In this particular case its a Company Called Constant Contact that managing big email blasts. They got into the State Department account im sorry, the u. S. Agency for International Development account with Constant Contact. And once theyre into thaton once they can pretend theyre the authorized user they send out emails that look like they are coming from the u. S. Government. You can imagine the costs that imposes on peoples confidence in all this. And they are doing espionage. A lot of this was aimed at humanarian groups, human Rights Groups that have been very critical of Vladimir Putin. David sanger we appreciate all your reporting on this thank you. Thank you, david. Thank you great to be with you. Still ahead, trump or change . Its not even split. But we are seeing the gop divide. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called out the other 44 gop senators in a statement reading in part republicans clearly put Election Concerns above the security of the congress and the country. Here to talk about in and so much more we have cnn Chief Washington correspondent and anchor of the lead and author of the new Best Selling Book The Devil May Dance jake tapper. Great to have you, jake. Thank you. So jake, this news that broke before we came on the air about the 44 republican senators who dont want to find out what was behind the capital insurrection and the truth. As well as some who couldnt be bothered to vote. The Capitol Police wanted this Bipartisan Commission. And so for these senators who voted against finding the truth or didnt bother to vote, how can they ever with a straight face against say they support the police . Well, i dont know but i im ready to make the prediction we will hear them say that. But by the same token lets dive into some of the explanations they gave into why they voted against the bill. The creation of the commission. First we heard that they were afraid it was going to be too partisan, way back in february. Kevin mccarthy, the House Republican leader sent a letter to nancy pelosi saying he didnt want more democrats on the commission than republicans. They wanted there to be equal subpoena power. He had a host of requests. And ultimately democrats gave in to every single one of them. Okay. So then that bill, that house bill negotiated by a democrat and republican, Bennie Thompson and john katko passed 35 House Republicans voted ford it. Gets to the senate. Still concerns from Mitch Mcconnell and others that the bill is is not the commission is not bipartisan enough. So Susan Collins offered amendment to improve it make it better. That was good enough for rob portman. Who said, okay, as long as we get a vote on the collins amendment i will vote to proceed with this. So that problem is really off the table. If you have a problem with how the commission is going to be made up, democrats basically acceded to every republican demand. So you cant with a straight face say well we thought the commission was going to be unfair. It doesnt make any sense. Well, we heard from john thune that the concern was that this was going to spill over into 2022, electoral consequences for them. The do you think theyre right, that this is there will be far fewer consequences for not endorsing the commission than there would be from getting the answers from this commission . Well, first of all, i mean there is a way to have the commission make its conclusions known either before the end of this year or to hold the recommendations until after the November 2022 election f2 thats important. Thats not really a principle. You cant say well were afraid of the truth and what the Bipartisan Commission is going to find and whether or not those facts have voters expressing disapproval with us. Thats not thats not a principle naked political fear. But even if that were the case, your question is is that calculation the right one. Yeah. That squashing it and killing it, as mitt romney suggested making it look as though youre trying to cover up the truth will be better than actually letting the commission go forward. And i dont know. I think one of the calculations going on here is that nancy pelosi, the speaker of the house, a democrat will create a select commission. That select commission will be seen as more partisan thus the conclusions will be so, i dont know. We have to see what the pelosi suggestion, recommendation is. If she says, no, i want to keep this to be bipart sab. Heres the republican, i want to be in charge of it. Heres the democrat, i want to be in charge of it, and it goes forward, fairly credible, even better for democrats and people hoping for truth. Even if not, this is going to be something that we cover, whether or not its under the guise of a Bipartisan Commission like the 9 11 commission or a select committee. Voters dont really care about that. I dont really know that i mean, there were at least seven congressional investigations of the benghazi attacks. And i doubt people could tell me which ones were headed by democrats, which ones were headed by republicans, which one was a select house committee. Theyre just congressional committees and people just listen to what the conclusions are. And also we do need answers. We dont know what happened during those hours. What was President Trump doing when he appeared to be awol . Why wasnt more help coming . 160 Capitol Police officers were injured, some of them grievously. I want to move on, jake, because yesterday we saw the two faces of the Republican Party in this interesting split screen, between paul ryan and matt gaetz. Heres a moment of that. If the conservative cause depends on the populist appeal of one personality or of secondrate imitations, then were not going anywhere. This is Donald Trumps party and im a Donald Trump Republican were not going back to it the days of the bushes and the mccains and the romneys. Our way, america first, is the way forward for america. Well, the choice couldnt be any more stark. Which one is winning at the moment . And the choice couldnt be more stark which one is under federal investigation but i guess thats a separate matter. Look, the party is in a really weird place right now, a bad place. I am of the opinion that the United States of America Needs a strong, thriving conservative party. Hopefully the Republican Party. A party that represents the views and opinions of millions of americans who believe in what the Republican Party believes traditionally. But what we have now is too Many Republican leaders enthrall to donald trump and in fear of the voters that donald trump has great has a great deal of sway with and not enough Republican Leaders standing up for conservative principles. And it is a very ugly fight. You know, after mccarthy, joe mccarthy was censured in 1954, there was an eagerness of the Republican Party to move on. After Richard Nixon resigned in 1974, there was an eagerness of the Republican Party to move on. We dont have that now. We dont have a Republican Party eager to move on. We have a Republican Party eager to repeat the mistakes that have been made in the last six months. Yeah. And we heard from judge amy jackson that steady drum beat could bring an insurrection again. Let me move on to your book. Youve got a new one out, i know, because you sent me one, you signed it, and i appreciate that, jake. The devil may dance. Set a couple of decades back but the story applicable to today. Tell us about it. The book is based on the real story of when after working their heart out to get President Kennedy elected, the rat pack expected that when President Kennedy came and visited california, that he would stay with sinatra and he had his compound built up, a helipad and more but Attorney General Robert Kennedy had a tough decision to make because he was going after organized crime. And is sinatra was buddies with a couple of mobsters. Thats where charlie goes to investigate to see if sinatra is really mobbed up. But the resonance the subtext of the book is what happens to you when you dance with the devil, what happens to you when you come into an alliance or make a friendship with somebody who has lower ethical and moral standards with you, whether its the Kennedy Campaign with the rat pack or sinatra with the mob or charlie, my main character, hanging out with the rat pack, what happens to you. And were seeing that play out in real time with House Republicans, with some notable exceptions, i should note, like liz cheney and Adam Kinzinger and others. When you make a deal with the metaphorical devil of donald trump because hes able to get you the judges and policies he wants, even if that means embracing a lie that led to great violence on january 6th, what does that do to you . Because it does change you. It does. Thats the lesson of the book and the lesson that were sadly seeing play out in nonfiction right now. Not only have you written this political misery or thriller, but you also, i guess, a lyricists in that you have created some of the lyrics in this for frank sinatra, am i right . Its funny because the last book i learned if you quote more than one line of the song, the lawyers will say, you cant do that because well get sued. So i wrote i have several Sinatra Songs in the book but theyre not real songs. Theyre fake. The lawyers for my publisher and said, tapper, weve been through this. You have an Entire Sinatra Song in here that is an intricate part of the climax of the book. You cant do any of that. Its all copyrighted. I said, no, no, its not a real song. Its a fake song. I made it up. Good enough to fool the lawyers. Well, if this whole political reporter thing doesnt work out, i think be you have a future in that. I want you to sing it, thats the thing.
