vaccine if you can, president trump obviously had plenty to say tonight about the state of the country and most notably perhaps about the job joe biden is doing. while he said he wasn't quite sure before when he might announce another run for perhaps office in the future, he certainly didn't have any shyness about talking about the things that he is seeing happening on the border with respect to illegal crossings. >> they are coming in from everywhere. they are dropping them off and they are pouring into our country. it's a disgrace. >> former president trump holding nothing back in his started this petition that are avid proud boy members, part of the three presenters, right-wing militia group, supporters of qanon. >> newsom was pushed on whether he believes the 2 million californians who have reportedly signed the petition are extremists. the governor sidestepped the question. the fact is we don't know if this point, neither does gavin newsom with the political affiliations are of those who back the recall. but one of the movement's most outspoken leader's claims he does know and he told us tonight around of third of those who signed either democrats or declined to state a party. >> it's about people and the people have a gripe with gavin newsom and that's why we've been so, so successful thus far to get it on the ballot. >> the recall effort has "the washington post" under scrutiny overcorrection the paper had to issue. using a single anonymous source to claim the former president trump in a december call with the top investigator for the georgia secretary of state told her to "find the fraud." >> one thing i will say it, "the washington post" did a correction. a lot of pressure was put on them but they did a correction because they realize what they did was wrong. son i have to find out was at "the washington post"'s fault or the people that run the elections in georgia? >> shannon: let's get reaction to the interview from fox news contributors guy benson and deroy murdock. great to have you with us. "the washington post" erik wemple writes "misreporting the words of the highest elected official in the land is a serious lapse and one that in this case seems so unnecessary. when it comes to phone calls the only good sources are the ones were dialed in." >> i would like to focus on the consequences of the story. it wasn't just a random error. it's a fake news that wound up as part of president trump's second impeachment trial. the consequences, will anything happen to the writer who wrote the story, the editors who approved it. will he be fired, suspended? will they pay any price for it or will they just go on and continue as if nothing happened. these egregious errors occurring, nobody pays any price and that's probably part of the reason it keeps coming up and we see more and more examples of this seemingly every day or every other day. >> shannon: "the federalist" go through list of similar errors caused a great deal of trouble for president trump and yet they can't discern that anyone suffered any real consequences. they say five totally bogus stories. wikileaks emails, michael flynn's russian relationship, u.s. intel agencies agree. anthony scaramucci and the investment fund and trump direction to lie. it doesn't seem to be an isolated incident and they seem these errors or anonymous stories that are change later, they seem to fall in one direction. >> that i think is a key piece because if it was evenly distributed with stories that made big mistakes in favor of president trump and big mistakes against him, that would be one thing. people make errors. we are all human and journalism isn't perfect when you see this zeal among almost all the press corps who hated the former president, i think corners were cut if the goal was to help take them down. there was a huge appetite for that, huge incentive among the press corps especially the elite press corps to take him down a peg or more and that's why you see the direction of almost all the mistakes, the dominoes falling, the cascade in one direction. this is the latest one. it is a black eye for "the washington post" and the many other news organizations who ran the exact same falsified quotes saying that they had independently corroborated it i guess from the exact same source. now we have the source material. here comes the correction. eye-opener. >> shannon: when you look at this, of course the former president raising claims it could have impacted and a lot of people think the georgia senate races because of the suggestion that he was doing something inappropriate for the georgia didn't have things under control. that there were other ripple effects what happened. also they were pointing out "the new york post," the story on hunter biden, essentially silenced by big tech leading into the election. how stories are drafted, what stories are promoted, which are suppressed. it does have a big impact on elections potentially. >> it has a huge impact and i think it's a great contrast. how this fake story was pumped up, as guide pointed out, the actual story that there is a federal investigation of hunter biden and there was last fall. that story was squelched as you may remember "the new york post," oldest newspaper in america had its twitter page unplugged for 15 or 16 days at the height of the political campaign, exactly that time voters should get information make their decisions. that contrast is quite dramatic and very telling and very unfortunate. >> shannon: guy, and to the issue about punishment, the fact that a number of companies and media outlets have done this kind of thing over the last three or four years and probably dating way before that, they make mistakes or they make errors that a lot of people worry and wonder whether they are intentional or at least because of a driving ideology behind the story as it's being written. what will there be for a consequence? the people reading the stories probably many subscribers wanted to hear that president trump was doing some thing wrong. they are not going to run out and cancel their subscriptions to "the washington post." how does anybody get held accountable for what happened here? >> is part of a wider truth or a higher truth or a general truth even if these specific details in a given story are factually wrong. i think that's inexcusable. it's not journalism. a lot of journalists talk a lot and paying much lip service to the concept of accountability for a politician. there has to be accountability for members of the media as well. if the media looks at the polling right now and it's not new. this has been for years. they are, especially these days, they are at a nadir. a majority of americans and some polls, super majority of americans do not trust the news media. the whole phrase fake news which deroy used, it's not something people chant in a trance. people have been angered, radicalized by these types of mistakes that seem agenda driven for years and trump started punching back hard, sometimes too hard in my opinion. it resonated with people because of the dishonesty and here we have a concrete example of fake news that ran in one of the most prestigious and influential newspapers in the country. as you said, it's not the first time and i suspect it won't be the last time. >> shannon: guy benson, deroy murdock, thank you both. >> thank you, shannon. >> shannon: a man in custody following a series of fatal shootings at three atlanta area massage parlors that leave eight people dead. reporting live tonight on the latest details, good evening. >> it started about 30 miles from where i'm standing in atlanta. five people were shot, four killed. one of the victims is in the hospital. authorities say the alleged shooter came here to atlanta. i want to show you where this all unfolded. it happened at two spas along a busy part of atlanta. police say they were responding to one spa when they got a call about shots fired at the spa just across the street. at one, they found three bodies. at the other, they found one body, all were asian women. it begs the question, was it racially motivated? discuss the latest. sheriff alex villanueva. sheriff, good to have you back. would you call yourself a tough on crime type? >> i call myself a smart on crime. there's two extremes, tough on crime, soft on crime. neither one serves the public interest. after focus on smart on crime. >> shannon: this is why george gascon is saying the pursuit of justice is timeless. that requires us to safeguard the integrity of our system going forward and to look back to correct the injustices of the past. do you have any issues without going through these old cases to see, if there was racial bias or prosecutorial misconduct? he says the number of people in jail wrongfully convicted is higher than we would think. >> i think he is judged by the people he's surrounded himself with. he goes to jail he believes everyone there is innocent. he couldn't find a crook in san quentin. but the point is there's a process already. the scales of justice allows for due process and gives ample opportunity for someone who truly innocent at the investigative level, at the beginning, at the first deputies on scene. who gets detain, who gets arrested. investigators hone that. if there is probable because they do a search warrant and executed. it goes to a trial. goes to the d.a.'s office to prosecute someone to the fullest extent of the law. from there there is ample opportunities for appeal but now he wants to revisit everything as if everyone in jail is innocent and all the cops are guilty. he's increasing the ability to prosecute law enforcement while decreasing his prosecution of violent criminals. >> shannon: we are hearing from a number of victims, loved ones of family members were left behind watching him take these reforms. i want to play something from the son of a murdered california officer about how he feels under gascon's leadership. >> i don't feel safe. i don't feel justice. i feel going forward is going to have horrifying repercussions for law enforcement officers. already on the edge, having to watch everything they do. these are the people protecting us. going forward, it's terrifying to me as a victim and as a normal member of society, what this means just being on the street. >> shannon: share of you and i have talked about victims and family members left behind. gascon has said that they have to go into parole hearings and face people up for parole who have may be harmed or killed members of their family and a prosecutor is not allowed to go in. that is gascon's role. we hear more and more people, like this young man, saying that they're worried about what's happening under these new plans. >> i spoke with family member member whose son was murdered and prosecutors and the person was upper parole and she explained to me yesterday that she was previously assisted by the district attorney's office since they abandon her, she herself had to get a copy of the investigative file, something that she never saw. she was shielded because it had images of her murdered son in graphic detail. she had to sift through it herself and explained to the parole board why this person was not suitable to be released. that's unconscionable. why we would victimize people already suffering for so much. our investigators are going to step in where we can and our cases but unfortunately we are only one-third of the cases coming out of l.a. county. we need the chiefs of police had all the investigators from all the other agencies to do the same to fill in a void that they district attorney has abandoned. >> shannon: the covid-19 pandemic. u.s. state department former lead investigator believes the virus could have come from research being done on a bio weapon from a lab in wuhan, china. that investigator joins us. david, welcome. >> thank you very much. nice to be with you. >> shannon: i want to read something. talking about the huge delay in getting experts into the country to look around and the delay in the report. the covid origins report postponed likely due next week. they say in the end, the team of investigators arrived in wuhan more than a year after the first cases. they were discovered in december of 2019. what can we expect to find out? what may we never find out? >> i think one of the first things your listeners need to understand is these people really aren't investigators. they are medical doctors. they have different capacities in the medical field. none of them is a real professional investigator. there are people that are medical sleuths out there in the world. we have a community of them in our center for disease control. you can notice none of them is actually invited to join the w.h.o. delegation. the one american leading the u.s. contingent i guess we'd safer the delegation is a fellow who was employed by the wuhan institute of virology. the level of complicity and compromise to begin with, massive time delay. the time the chinese have taken to destroy evidence, covered up and now handpick the members of our own delegation including their guy who's worked with them under contract ironically funded by our own lead doctor, dr. tony fauci. it's a mystery. it's all summarized around one phrase and that's called gain of function. that may sound really complicated but it's not. it's the manipulation of genetic material to increase the virulence of developing the vaccine to protect against a weapon, there's not much of a difference these days. you're not going to really understand the nexus of this program and what it was trying to accomplish (avo female) get 0% for 63 months on select new 2021 models. now through march 31st. >> governor newsom, i implore you to open up our churches by easter sunday. we have a 3,000 seat auditorium that sits empty. we gave you last easter. we want to be safe but we've been doing this for a year. it's time. >> shannon: a california pastor going viral for his public plea to governor gavin newsom to reopen golden state churches ahead of easter sunday. a full year into the pandemic. the author of "faith in the spotlight," megan alexander. good to have you back. >> always good to be with you. >> shannon: this pastor has racked up more than $100,000 in fines because the church was continuing to be open. this pastor is saying if people can go to walmart we can safely meet. it's a trying time for a lot of churches. saying we just want to be able to worship together safely. >> my heart goes out to this pastor. i flew to phoenix, arizona, for spring training baseball game with my boys. i sat shoulder to shoulder with people on that flight, much closer than i would if i sat in church. i sat with my fellow baseball fans in the stands and i even went to walmart. i went willingly knowing the risks. people on easter sunday should be given that choice. let's go back to giving people the freedom of choice. knowing the risk. let them make the choice to walk through those doors. there still a very large group of people in this country that believe churches and houses of worship are essential services. >> shannon: yeah. constitutionally protected rights to our freedom of religion. every state is handling this differently. i visited you in the nashville area. we could go to church in person. it was the only time i have done so because where i live they are not open, at least not any big extent. in canada, following a case of a pastor who is in jail because he refused to stop pastoring and leaving the church. he said it was his conviction that the church should be able to meet together. it is about a principal. he's going to be held in jail until may for his trial. we are not at that situation here but i worry. >> absolutely. a pastor's job is to care for his flock and any time someone feels they can't fulfill their god-given destiny, it's difficult to work through. as you mention, different states have different rules and different people of been allowed to do different things. many of us are puzzled as to what was deemed an essential service. vaccinations are looking good. hospitalizations are down. it's been a year. i think by easter sunday you can see the argument of this pastor in my heart goes out to this one in canada who just wants to worship. >> shannon: yeah, we hope there's a lot of hope on the horizon. i think there is. we've talked about people have been through so much and they have lost so much. i found people are turning to faith in a new way, deeper way. they are searching because they feel so lost and they have a lot of pain in their lives. it was over the last year that i wrote the book that you've been so kind in talking with me on podcasts and instagram.
