>> we know that the children in this group, along with two of their mothers, are being treated in a pediatric hospital in israel. the hospital said that they were in stable condition. we haven't been hearing much directly from the families of the group that was released today. this is how it's been working. we can hear from the families in the days after they're released. the day of the actual really lease is often reserved for attending to their immediate needs, and, you know, talking to the press in the public comes mostly in the days after. as far as the hostages we're hearing from in general, what we're hearing our stories of really intense emotional reunions. people seem to be in generally decent medical condition. mental health is obviously a much larger question that we're gonna be thinking about in the dressing in the weeks to come, alicia. >> we keep hearing over and over again, this is a long road ahead for all. ali, president biden spoke with benjamin new yahoo today. we know that we're in a critical 24 hour period. what can you tell us about the conversation? >> yeah, alicia. we know these two have been in new york constant communication since the war began on october 7th. they share the latest called this afternoon, and these two talked about the israeli hostages that have been released as part of this multi-day cease-fire, as well as today's release of abigail when edan, the four-year-old american girl who was released as part of today's tranche of hostages. the prime minister thanked the president for helping broker this cease-fire deal and being able to fully implement it for adding the near -- needed pressure to be able to seal this deal. that's credit we've seen not just from israeli officials, but also qatari officials who since friday, since the steel began, have given credit to the president for his personal diplomatic influence and approach to the steel as it was underway. the two leaders agreed that their work is not done. they talked about potentially extending this cease-fire, the need to get more hostages out of gaza, the need to get more humanitarian aid into gaza, and they said that their work is not done, and alicia, they agreed to stay in very close contact over the next few days according to the white house. >> david, two questions for you. one, what do we know about the palestinians were released? and what do we know about the aid that has been able to get into gaza? when >> alicia, the palestinians who have been released are all prisoners within the context of the israeli military occupation. several of them have been charged, charged, and convicted for serious violent crimes, including attempted brighter. many were being held indefinitely, many of them children, teenage boys especially, without charge, without evidence presented against them. it's because this is happening in the context of the occupation that we're seeing such celebration by the palestinian people in the west bank, who by in large, based on the people we've been speaking to over the last few days, see these arrests and detentions as inherently unjust. as far as the aid, we know that larger numbers of aid have been attempting -- entering the gaza strip according to this agreement. we also know that aid is being more effectively and widely distributed within the dot -- gaza strip, which is a direct result of the hostilities pausing. -- life-saving for many people in the gaza strip who are receiving it, nevertheless, what we all's ways here from the red crescent society is that the aid is insufficient. alicia. >> ali, you spoke about the white house's general sense of the possibility that this could be ongoing, that this deal could be extended specifically on the question of american hostages. are they maintaining hope that more will be released tomorrow we? >> absolutely. the president and white house officials are saying that they are hopeful, but they're also keenly aware of the challenges that lie ahead. and the challenges associated with getting not just the two american women that the president and white house officials have four days said that they're hopeful will be released, because they meet the same terms of release we -- but they are hopeful that the now eight american citizens and one green card holders who are still unaccounted for, believed to be among hamas as hostages in gaza, will all be released, as well as israeli hostages and hostages from other countries. the president saying that he is aware that more work needs to be done, and he underscored how incredibly fragile the steal continues to be. how all of these pieces of this constantly moving puzzle have to fit perfectly together for this to continue being successful. he talked about what we need to be done to get those americans out, how he is continuing his personal diplomacy, personal phone calls with the leaders of qatar, of jordan, egypt, and of course, israeli prime minister netanyahu, and how he wouldn't stop doing that until all hostages are released, alicia. >> nbc's david noriega, an nbc's allie raffa for us at the white house. thank you both for getting started. with us now, aaron david miller, a former -- he's now a senior fellow at the carnegie endowment for international peace, and author of the end of greatness, why america can't and doesn't want another great president. aaron, thank you for being with us. perhaps to the title of this book, this is been described as by one israeli official to my colleague at nbc news as a biden deal, not a netanyahu deal. what does that indicate to you? both about the role that the president played in the five weeks leading up to the release of these hostages, and perhaps, equally critically, the role he will need to play moving forward? >> first of all, alicia, thanks for having me. the administration doesn't have great options here. they succeeded, i think, in deterring a run and hezbollah by deploying two carrier strike groups in the eastern mediterranean. and looks like the israeli lebanese front is -- by the other options, the president as focused primarily on the hostages, it seems to me. because they offer the only diplomatic pathway to do two things. and i don't think you have to be a brilliant analyst to read between the lines. number one with -- enormous pressures as a consequence of humanitarian catastrophe in gaza. this is a way, as the president and jake sullivan -- needed humanitarian aid into gaza, both in southern gaza and in the north. the second issue is even more complex. that is, how do you extend this in a way that would perhaps de-escalate the situation? either delay will constrain, at some point, the looming israeli military action, which is gonna be focused on southern gaza where presumably, the senior leadership -- hamas is located, as well as, perhaps, the hostage -- where the israeli objectives and the administration's objectives may well be diverged. the israelis could determine to, again, using their words, to eradicate hamas both above ground and below, kill the senior leadership, but how does that with -- the administration's objective right now in extending cease-fire in order to regain or see more hostages released? >> when you talk about that key decision point, that looming decision for israel, resume the ground campaign or continue negotiations, what and who is factoring into that decision? >> i think the families of the hostages are critically important here. that was one of the reasons, in 2011, that the israelis agreed to -- win for over 8000 palestinians. one of the most extraordinary -- trades. the hostage families and that situation played a critical role in bringing pressure on the government, and the same applies here. the more hostages that are released, the greater the need on the part of the hostage families for those who are still in hamas captivity, the greater the pressure on the netanyahu government, which is why i believe that you may get with another four or five days out of these sorts of negotiations. -- today's release of 177 hostages remain. 61 women and children, and 116 adults, both civilians, men and women, and israeli defense force soldiers. and it seems to me, at some point, hamas is gonna run out of hostages to trade. they're not gonna give up. those adult males, let alone the idf soldiers. they will be kept for further trades down the road. and clearly, hamas's objective is so patently obvious. it's to dribble out hostages in the hopes that pressure -- internal pressure, external pressure from the arab states, from the qataris, and even from the biden administration, will force the israelis to delay, constrain, and perhaps, even at some point, and their prospects of militarily eradicating hamas's military infrastructure. frankly, i doubt whether or not that's gonna be successful. >> our, and we reminded ourselves over and over how fluid this all is, how ten u.s. at all. as i would argue in the past 24 hours the deal seem like it was off for a period of time. it came back together, reminded again the nature of these deals as allie raffa, my colleague said puzzle peaches having to put together. this would seem to be a critical 48-hour period given that tomorrow is supposed to be the final day of the cease-fire. i want to know from you what is that you are watching for as we move into the next 24 hours? >> the israeli decision to extend the truce, or cease-fire buyer, however you want to describe it for additional hostages per day. hamas apparently, reference to a statement wants to explore that option. hamas has added the idea of releasing more palestinian prisoners. in a 3 to 1 ratio, hostile mans may go up, i think they're still negotiating to be done but i do believe that in the interest of both the israeli government and certainly given hamas's strategy to trade time for hostages, to continue this humanitarian truce. we may get another three, four days perhaps even as many as six out of these negotiations. but at some point, the government in israel needs to make a critical decision. and i think the decision has already been made to pursue their campaign, to destroy hamas's military infrastructure, not its political organization, not its deep roots in the community of gaza, but to destroy the military infrastructure above and below ground. it's hard to believe that they would create a situation where hamas would be able to continue to survive and have a final day of some sort of cease-fire, the imposition to launch more rockets. that would be a victory of extraordinary proportions and defeat for the israelis and by implication the biden administration. >> we'll continue to watch and see how this unfolds. aaron david miller, thank you for your time. another big story we're tracking, police in burlington, vermont, are investigating the shooting of three palestinian college students as a possible hate -- mayor. young man were walking to a dinner near the university of vermont saturday when police say a man opened fire on them. one of the victims the scene's serious injuries, the other two are in stable condition. according to the arab american anti discrimination committee, the men were speaking arabic and two of them were wearing traditional palestinian scarves at the time. we're told president biden has been briefed on the shooting and in a joint statement the families of the victims said, quote, we're grateful to the doctors, nurses who are working tirelessly to save our children's lives. and city officials are giving their full attention to this horrific hate crime in the pursuit of justice. a reward is on the table for information that leads to the shooter. we're gonna have a live report from vermont later in this hour. coming up, more on the hostility goshen zinc looting new reporting on what led to hamas's decision to remeet four-year-old american, abigail edan, a -- blast health -- harassment in new york and a panel of judges can do about it tomorrow. ♪ ♪ ♪ calms the nerve down. and my patients say you know doc, it really works. why give your family just ordinary eggs when they can enjoy the best?
