wave. but that isn't stopping donald trump from making his play for latino voters in two swing states in the sunbelt, as the 2024 race heats up and a day after extreme temperatures at an arizona rally, gave his supporters literal sunstroke trump was just on stage in las vegas, using hot, overheated rhetoric to paint himself as a victim, as he preps for his first video meeting from new york probation officer tomorrow, following his felony convictions. but the critical issues in arizona on topics like immigration and abortion and its on actual policy that trumps campaign rhetoric has been lacking this weekend. on the other hand, president biden is flying back from france after using his pulpit to take action on our southern border, and the biden campaign starts the week hoping to cease on shifts in his favor on polls conducted after trumps 34 felony convictions. he now is minute berrigan. democrat from california, and chair of the congressional hispanic caucus. congresswoman, thank you for joining us tonight. let's start with some exclusive breaking news from nbc news today. former president donald trump is scheduled to sit for an interview tomorrow with a new york city probation officer, trump will be joining by videoconference from mar-a-lago. that accommodation most people convicted of multiple felonies would never receive. and yet, trump continues to argue he is being treated unfairly. how do you think american voters are adjusting to the reality of a presidential candidate and former president who has been found guilty of crimes by a jury of his peers? >> thank you for having me, reverend. i think everybody should be treated, in this country, the same nobody should be above the law, shouldn't get that special treatment. but we are seeing that happening here. look, i haven't heard from my constituents very much other than to say we now have a convicted felon who is an ex- president and we have got to make sure that he doesn't get back into the white house again. there's a lot of concern and fear, of course, of what a second trump presidency will look like, especially in my latino community and across the country when we are traveling with the hispanic caucus on the road in latino communities. >> now, the trump campaign launched its latino outreach efforts today in nevada were temper have reach 100+ degrees this afternoon amid a southwest heat wave yesterday. trump went ahead with a rally in arizona as the temperatures topped 110 degrees. and some attendees had to be hospitalized. the trump campaign says it is taking precautions today, but as we both know, trump is a climate change denier, and is not the first time that his supporters have needed hospitalization, after being exposed to extreme temperatures at one of his campaign rallies. what are your thoughts as he targets latino voters this weekend, seemingly oblivious to their real health and safety? >> reverend, this is no real latino outreach. this president is a fraud and if you take a look at the record on what he did for latinos when he was in the white house, he is no friend of latinos. he was the one who separated families. he was the one that had the highest unemployment of latinos when he was in office. this is somebody who tried to take away the affordable care act, which would strip millions, healthcare away from millions of latinos. so he is no friend. and let's remember that he is going to do mass deportations. and he has even said that he is going to sweep people who shouldn't even be swept up. it is a beautiful people, he has said. this is somebody who latinos should be very concerned about, and worried about. but what is interesting about the rally today, you didn't hear donald trump at all talk about abortion or women's reproductive rights. why is that? because in nevada, 81% of latinos believe that a woman should have the right to choose and should have access to healthcare. and now -- >> 81%? >> 81% of latinos in nevada believe that the right to choose and should have access to abortion. he didn't talk about it all. he didn't talk about this new attack on women not having access to contraceptive, and ivf so this is a real issue, and this former president is not talking about that in a critical statement like nevada because he knows, or maybe he doesn't know, but that this is how they feel. and so again, he is no friend of latinos. he is a fraud. i am hoping that we can go in on why the american people of this record. what he says he is going to do to latinos. it is not good. >> highest level of unemployment of latinos when he was president. that is interesting. let's move on, though, to this caucuses response to president biden's recent executive action limiting the number of daily asylum requests. as caucus chair, you expressed your disappointment with the action, which follows several meetings the caucus had recently with the president on immigration. after congressional republicans killed a more comprehensive immigration bill to please trump. who wants to run on the issue in this election. what does the order get right and what does it get wrong, in your view? and what impact might it have on president biden for latino support, which polls show to have eroded ahead of the election? >> as you mentioned, i am disappointed the president is going in this direction. we have seen that under the former president, he used this very same authority to stop people from coming and be able to claim asylum. that is just very un-american. it is not what we are, what our values are. so one of the things that we, as a hispanic caucus implore the president to do is to make sure to not only focus on enforcement only, but make sure that we are pairing that with positive, and the things that we can make sure to lay latinos that we are fighting for. for example, making sure there is protection for the spouses of u.s. citizens. this has been the top ask and the top priority of the hispanic caucus, asking the president of the white house to make sure that they are doing. and this is something i would understand is being considered but we need to make sure we are doing everything we can to protect folks who have been here for a long time. undocumented folks need those protections. and many people, reverend, think that if you marry a u.s. citizen, that you automatically have a fast pathway to becoming a citizen here or getting a green card. that is really what we are asking for is the ability for people to work. the ability for people to stay here who have been here for a long time, and so we are hoping that the president will take action soon, as quickly as possible, to make sure that we, you know, offset the enforcement because we know enforcement only doesn't work. >> before we end, let's get back to the issue of reproductive rights. house republicans just past a veterans funding bill that limits abortion access for vets and active troops. at the same time, the supreme court is expected to decide two major abortion rights cases ahead of this summer recess. one way restrictions on a commonly used abortion pill. the other on whether an almost total abortion ban in idaho conflicts with federal law requiring emergency medical care for patients. how are you seeing these issues play with democratic voters in your los angeles district? and the hispanic community, in general, ahead of november? >> well, it is a huge issue, and it is going to continue to be a huge issue. as you mentioned, right now people are on edge. not knowing what is going to be protected and what will not. the number one thing we have to do is we have to pass federal legislation to make sure roe versus wade is back in power and we codify that because it is so important. but as you mentioned, what is happening in idaho, where women are being turned away from getting healthcare, even in emergency situations are being flown somewhere else. doctors are leaving idaho. we can't have this happen across the country in every state. it has been chaos, it has been a mess. it has been really hard for women. especially latino women who are disproportionately impacted by these bands that we are seeing both on abortion and the effort to go against making legal contraceptive. i never thought i'd see this happen. why can't everybody support a women's ability does decide when they have children or not have children with contraceptive this decision is something that we are all waiting for because it impacts women's ability to have emergency procedures when their health is at stake. and that, i think, is something that we should continue to tell the american people about so they know that if donald trump is in the white house again, there could be a national ban so even safe states, like california, nevada, and others would be at risk and the women there would be at risk. and that is why we need to make sure we are going on the road, we are talking to people where they are and they know what's at stake in this election. >> all right, thank you, chairman of the hispanic caucus, congresswoman annette barragan. let's turn now to the veep's sweepstakes of the veep's. former president trump has handed, he may announce his pick at the republican convention, now just five weeks away. the trump campaign has reportedly vetted several candidates recently. sources tell nbc news that four of the top prospects right now are north dakota congressman, doug burgum, senators marco rubio of florida, tim scott of south carolina, and jd vance of ohio. we had another possible on politicsnation last night, conger smith byron donald of florida, following his controversial comments about the jim crow era. take a listen to part of our conversation last night. >> m.e., how can you even live with yourself and think like jim crow was a good error or better era for black? what happened to you? >> that's real cute. >> strata question. >> i am not talking to someone, my gosh. >> explained to me what jim crow did to help families? >> the marriage rates during the jim crow era were higher or black families. a great society. i did not say that. i did say jim crow three times. that is not to say that it was better. i never said it, those words never came out of my mouth when are you going to get that through your school? i never said that, and the difference? >> we'll have years and we heard what you said. joining me now is my political panel, two former congressman, max rose, a democrat in new york and david pacelli, a former republican of florida. david, from what you just heard from congressman donald, is he vp material? >> no, reverend, first, thank you so much for confronting rec donald on that. he is a lightweight that would not survive being donald trump's vice president. he is a backbencher in florida politics who has never really done anything impressive. he emerged here in the tea party, lost a race then, and it up serving four years in the state house, and won a nine way primary by about 700 votes. he has been one thing that a lot of lightweight republicans like to do, attach themselves to donald trump and avoid themselves of any substance and what we saw on display was an inability to enter into an intellectual exchange with you about a critical issue and really stupid comment he had made. he is not someone that would be prepared to be president of the united states, which is the most important qualification to be vice president of the american people. we should hope that byron donalds is not donald trump pick >> , there are several black men on donald trump's show business potential, has the potential to be vp pick, including ben carson and the senate only black republican, tim scott, recently launched a new effort to win over black and nonwhite working-class voters in seven swing states. would it benefit trump to choose a black man as his vop literally works what impact would it have all on his face? >> it is good to see you, rev. vp picks rarely have an impact on just about anything. let's not move so quickly away from what he said just yesterday. there's two responses here. the first is, he is engaging in the weirdest form of triangulation. between jim crow, also trying to appeal to african-american voters, so he is trying to get more african-american voters while also inciting a base of maga, xena phobic, racist extremists. that is not a winning possibility right there. it doesn't make political sense but then he comes on your show and says, hold on, didn't have anything to do with jim crow. it was really trying to say is that african-americans were better in a free great society era. that really be true? prior to medicare, medicaid, unprecedented investments in infrastructure and education and improvements in addressing poverty, all of which led to incredible improvements in healthcare outcomes, as well as decreasing poverty? that is what he thinks, this was a better country for anyone? that gets to the very fabric of what the republican agenda is right now, and that is something we should not take for granted and we should take him on. >> and that i said to him. nothing in the great society did anything that hurts the families. in fact, they were making families be able to get things like medicare and manpower. the other thing is, jim crow was an explicit race law you can't divorce race from jim crow. that's what it was. but david, the new york times just published a lengthy profile on north dakota governor, donald berger, who is not well-known nationally but emerges as a possible option for donald trump. also appreciates his full head of hair for the people who are less familiar with him what would governor bergen bring to the ticket? >> i actually think it is down between bergen and rubio. who knows? those are my parlor bats. and here is why bergen. nobody knows who he is. they will probably never learn who he is and would make it all the way through november without bergen taken a bit of the spotlight from donald trump. that is very important that nobody cares about the vice president. secondly, he is very wealthy so he can write a check and contribute. and three, i think he and trump really share some type of business profile that they get to admire each other by being on the same ticket. he is your anonymous pick that would fit nicely and not attract a lot of scrutiny unless he fell on his face like byron donalds just did on the issue of race or culture. marco rubio is the second one because he is a proxy for nikki haley voters. because he is a proxy for nikki haley voters, maybe donald trump doesn't want him. >> max? conventional wisdom would suggest trump should give a strong consideration to a female running mate. but there hasn't been a lot of positive push surrounding the rumored options like congresswoman elise stephani or governor christie mill. noticeably missing from the list is former south carolina governor, nikki haley, who remains a popular figure with some republicans, which she announced recently she would vote for trump this november. she warned him not to take her supporters for granted. now this comments, politico says after his recent felony convictions, trump is more focused on juicing the base then winning over moderates. what do you make of this strategy by trump? >> look, it is not winning strategy. it is pretty confounding because still, nikki haley is appearing on primary ballots. and she is still pretty consistently winning 15 to 30% of the vote in each of these primaries, despite the fact that the voters knew she had dropped out of the race long before. nikki haley hasn't fully resoundingly endorsed donald trump she has said that she is planning to vote for him an act of cowardice but nonetheless, not wrapping her arms around. which i think reflects where she thinks her voters actually still stand with him. you know, you could go through a bunch of reasons why they are making decisions. but they want a fully owned subsidiary sycophant right now. and that is why we have seen amongst the potential vp candidate is the sycophant olympics. >> give me your guests. >> it is not going to be bergen , i disagree that because he is actually a successful businessman. donald trump was not so donald trump would not want to be overshadowed by his vp. what i personally think? because he views everything as if it is the next iteration of somebody, apprentice. it is not going to be one person on that, they're going to try to introduce some level of excitement, anything to distract voters from their actual agenda, which seems to rip women's healthcare away and destroy the fabric of this country. >> all right, thank you both for coming on. a solemn anniversary, i will share my thoughts on d- day, jim crow, and what americans can teach our leaders today. that is next in this week's rise up. visionworks. see the difference. these days everyone is staring at screens, scanning the news, and watching their spending. good vision is more important than ever, but so especially now is saving. that's why america's best includes a free eye exam when you buy two pairs of glasses for just $79.95, that's a savings of at least sixty nine bucks. two pairs for $79.95. includes a free exam. that's not just a better deal, it's america's best. book an exam online today at america's best.com. ann, you're on mute. it's time to feed the dogs real food, not highly processed pellets. the farmer's dog is fresh food made with whole meat and veggies. it's not dry food. it's not wet food. it's just real food. it's an idea whose time has come. i thought i was sleeping ok... but i was waking up so tired. then i tried new zzzquil sleep nasal strips. their four—point lift design opens my nose for maximum air flow. so, i breathe better. and we both sleep better. and stay married. were you worried the wedding would be too much? >> first, thanks for having me. i think that the contrast is clear and it's stark. i think that president biden is doing a remarkable job of venerating the 80th anniversary at a time where our country is deeply fractured, in part because of donald trump's politics, the ways in which he is trying to return us back to a time, in this country, of the jim crow south. of a second-class caste system for black folks. i think that it is apparent in many of the policies that he puts forth in the rhetoric and the folks he surrounds himself with, the politics he engages with in the ways he disrespects soldiers, specifically soldiers of color on a regular basis. i think this anniversary is also an opportunity to just commemorate the time in our nation, and together to fight against really historic worldwide harm that was hitler and what he was trying to do in europe. but when he was in europe at the time, that hitler, he is been told that hitler is a mighty foe, but he must have learned that from the. there is racism that also has to be contended with a serious way, and it is a very clear contrast between the two residents. >> lindsey graham of south carolina has been criticized for comments he made about d- day on this morning's sunday shows. take a listen. >> to celebrate the 80th anniversary of d-day, it was a failure. it was the unnecessary war by winston churchill. we had a dozen chances to stop hitler. it is not about nato, it is not about american weapons in ukraine. it is about a megalomaniac wanting to create the russian empire by force of arms. >> now to be fair to the senator, he seems to suggest that d-day was a failure because he thinks the conflict could have somehow been avoided. but he also seems to have adopted the trump-y and view of history where truth is relative and sacrifice represents weakness. much the same as we heard from congressman byron donalds in his comments regarding jim crow. what are your thoughts, richie? >> i thought his comments were rather incoherent so i'm still trying to process what he was even trying to say. but i think it's, it is alarming, to say that d-day, of any kind of battle, specifically given the fact that it was the reason that we won the war was somehow unnecessary sacrifice and specifically because so many perished in that fight. so i don't quite understand the point he was trying to make. >> let's stay with trump and republicans for a moment. i wonder what your thoughts are on a possible second term. the former president and his allies have spoken about a major expansion of the military, including deploying troops to the border. in order to deal with crime and homelessness, realistic little demonstrations. they have also floated ideas for cutting funding to veteran affairs departments and many privatizing many of its sectors and dismantling programs at the defense department. how much do these policy proposals concern you? >> all of them are deeply concerning. i think one, we can go back to d-day insofar as eisenhower led that action and he, years later, warned about the military-industrial complex and the ways in which our military was going to grow at the behest of folks who were financially motivated, had interests around power and not necessarily for protecting the freedoms of part and parcel to the whole entire project of the military, or should be. and so i think by way of a second term with trump, and the kind of policies that he is trying to propagate, dismantling veteran affairs. i think is something that the republicans have always been opted for i think that goes back to talking about world war ii is about what the almost million black veterans who served at that time, less than 5% came back and got access to the g.i. bill, right? and in the decades that have proceeded, there has been racial disparities and access to veterans benefits that has cost hundreds of millions of dollars in lost compensation to vets that served honorably. so i think that they likely know that. they don't want to contend with that because the conversation about what reparative justice looks like in this country. >>, to follow up on the issue of race. i know that, by the way, that you are going to the white house tomorrow to participate in the juneteenth event there with other activists and leaders and you're going to see vice president nash actually be there, as well point black -- back in march, a historic black represents and case against the united states will move forward against the u.s. department of veterans affairs, claiming racial discrimination against black veterans in housing, education, and disability benefits, since the inception of the g.i. bill, following world war ii. it has been over two months since this happened. can you give us an update on the status of this case? >> first of all, become aware of it. most people do not even know about the fearless fund case. black women want to support other black women and businesses aren't allowed to do it. you don't tell j.p. morgan they can't create an investment fund. we're going to tax new market tax credits or anything like that because they are supporting someone that they want support. we have funds on wall street where if you want to support companies that are only doing climate change, you can, because that's your interest. to say that you can't support black women, specifically to go after black folks, want to support black folks. >> who have been discriminated against. >> black women said, we are going to get ourselves together and support ourselves and then you have people who are still fully coming to attack. i asked people to become aware of because it is under the radar. we need to shed light on it. support organizations like the lds, the association, the naacp. equal defense fund, support the organization. when it comes to housing termination, their pursuit, i knew that their organizations like the national fair housing alliance that does that sort of work to protect you. so we have, over generations, put into place the blueprint and organizations to combat and fight this law, we asked the people join the fight. this is a call to action. when evil people plot, good people have to plan. >> before i let you go, what can you tell us about superman? >> superman is a great, great example of american ascetic at work, right? that is all i can say about that. but i am so happy to be a part of it. i play the editor of the daily planet. >> wow. i can't wait. actor extraordinaire and activist, i want to say, wendell pierce, thank you, it was an honor to have you. >> the honor is mine. >> thank you very much. i learned from byron donalds. i will be right back. frustrated by skin tags?
