50,000 people, the nation is larger. About 200,000 people of. There i know that still smarter for a country, but its a country. Its from New Zealand its got independence in 1962, United Nations 1976. Then, this weekend, they had something really naughty, and potentially exits existential challenging happen to them. For most of the time, they have been an independent country. For nearly 40 years of the 60 years theyve been a country. Samoa has been run by the same ruling party. In fact, the same guy, the same individual man, the Prime Minister from that party, has been in power for as the Prime Minister for the last 22 years. But, he lost the last election this year, in april, samoa had an election it was really close and hardfought. In the end, the pry the Prime Minister, his power has been parties been running in power for 40 years. In a parliamentary system, the Opposition Power since they have a majority, they get to form the new government. That Parties Leader gets to be the new Prime Minister. That transition, the really big transition samoa, it was supposed to happen today. Parliament was supposed to gather to swear in its members with the new party in the majority, they would then swear in the leader of the party as the new Prime Minister. Some oh would have a different leader in charge for the first time in four years, a different leader in 22 years. The big important transfer of power was supposed to happen today in samoa, it did not, maybe, depending on who you ask. This weekend, there was a Shock Announcement in samoa that parliament would be dissolved. They would not convene today to swear in anyone, let alone the new Prime Minister. The equivalent of this in our system, we have a president and not apply, minister but you can imagine what it would be like. The weekend between the four trump is no longer the President And Biden is being sworn in, and Vice President Mike Pence announced that actually the Electoral College Votes would not be counted on January 6th. Congress will not be in session, would not convene that day to formalize the Election Results. So, there would be no form of Election Results in the inauguration is now in question. The equivalent of that happened, right . That of course was the fantasy. The Trump Fantasy between with the January 6th attack on our capital. Ted cruz, brad hawley, thats what they tried to do around the president ial election. Do not count the results. Dont make it official, see what happens when Inauguration Day comes around. In samoa this weekend, this whole same idea behind the Trump Fantasy of january six, it actually came to fruition. They went ahead with it. Whats supposed to be outgoing political party and Prime Minister, they went ahead and said no. Parliament will not convene. Parliament will not meet anymore. That means, the new Prime Minister cannot be sworn in and take power. That was the announcement on saturday. Saturday. That was saturday. Yesterday, sunday, the Supreme Court ruled unequivocally that this decision to suspend parliament was illegal. It was an on a lawful act. Parliament must be convened as planned, so the new members of parliament can be sworn in and the Prime Minister can assume power. That was the clear ruling from the Supreme Court of that country. That was yesterday. Then, this is what happened today. You will see the Guy In The Red Robed and the white wig here, he is the Chief Judge of the Supreme Court in that country, and he arrived at the Parliament Today with the ready to be sworn in Prime Minister elect. It was the ruling of his court, the Supreme Court that said parliament must convene today to swear in the new leader. You will see he grabs the Door Handle here, polls on the door, the door is locked. Hes there representing the judiciary. Hes the higher ranking judicial in the country in the Supreme Court. He is locked out of parliament. The rightly newly effect elected official of samoa is also locked out. They made the most of it after the door was locked, he turned around, they went up to attend they had set up on the lawn outside of parliament and held there a swearing in ceremony for all the new members of parliament from her party. Also swearing in for her, the Prime Minister elect. Her name is sort of mine pronouncing isnt right there. First Prime Minister of similar. Sworn in in a tent because she was locked out of the parliament building. The one whos been in power for 20 years he says, well, that swearing in wasnt official. It doesnt count. After all, it was in a tent, not in parliament. Therefore, he said he is still the leader of the country, her Prime Ministership is not in effect in official. He is refusing to let her take power. Also refusing the ruling of the Supreme Court telling him otherwise. Ng of so, tonight when i say die Power Transfer a power take place . I dont know. Whos the Prime Minister of samoa . The woman, i think in reality. Officially the, owned the old Guy Wont go. In technically in technical terms this is a coup. Him keeping the Parliament Doors locked and refusing to languish power, so the newly duly elected Prime Minister cannot replace him this is a coup. This is how democracys get their throats cut and bleed out. He has been there for 22 years this dude. Over the course of the 22 years hes made these gradual rules to make people have a hard time competing against him and releasing his rule. Those legal shifts enough to keep him in power for all that time, but now he has lost an election and its time to go, he wont accept that. He wont accept that the election had a real result, and that the consequence of that Election Result is he is no longer in power. This is how it happens. Happens this is for the New York Times today New York Times toda i dont know what will happen next in samoa. I know that as americans, we have a specific kind of myopia about democracy. A small democracy. We are farsighted about stuff like this is a country. It is easier for us to see dynamics like this at work when theyre far away. They get blurry are and harder for us to understand when we are closer to home. And so, speaking of not conceding, one of the things we have eyes on tonight we will be covering later this hour, is the worsening weirdness. The sheer ridiculousness of the republicanled recount of the president ial Election Results in arizona. It remains a story that is actually laugh out loud funny. I will admit it is absurd that trump supporters have just seized 2 million, and the Voting Machines are now being declared that they have found their own results of the president ial election, which they like better. Guess what the results will be, right . Absolutely absurd. They are not only gonna do it in arizona, they will do it in georgia, wisconsin republicans are gonna make them do it there as well, the republican controlled counties all over the country that are starting to do it as well. All to declare that Joe Biden really isnt the president. The last election, 2020, it shouldnt count. Trump did not really lose his election bed. It is actively nuts. Especially the closer you look at the cast of characters involved, and whether crazy theories are about why the election should count. Lved, and whether crazthe closer it is. And its silly and less consequential than it seems. Why didnt the app at your a little bit . Step back from that a second . Look at the new poll that came out today that fines are about 53 of republicans in american who believe that right now, donald trump is currently the lawful President Of The United States, and Joe Biden is there for an illegal you super occupying the White House even though he lost the 2020 election to trump. The majority of republicans already believe that. Where does this go as they now start to uncounted the election from 2020, and invent the reason explanations, and wild tales about what happened to the Voting Machines, and would happen to the ballots. I mean, the 2020 Election Shouldnt be counted. I mean, the way it worked in samoa, they didnt storm the capital, they just locked out the incoming Prime Minister elect. They just lock the door. Theyre equivalent of an inauguration could not happen. The court intervened. So, now its a coup. If you do not obey court rulings, and did not respect Election Results, and you hold on by force, that is a coup. Its a question of how long how much everybody holds their temper. How long break before some further pressure besides a locked door comes to be. I hope that does not happen. Weve already shown here that force will not be a big Threshold Issue for us. Force is not going to be a problem. Is not going to for the side tho concede in our election. Again though, sometimes its harder for us to see this stuff up close than when its farther away. In another direction, but also far away, belarus, the guy in charge there has been in power for 26 years. Baylors used to be part of the soviet union, its only had a president since 1994. The same man has been in that job, has been president , there since they established the office of president 26 years ago. He is the only president that belarus is ever known. Alexander you but Shane Coy is joined at the help with russian president Vladimir Putin. They talk about joining the two countries together. Hasnt happened, yet couldnt any. Moment Shank Oh is called europes last dictator. I honestly dont like to say, that it feels like urgings to me. How things are going though, sure. He is a dictator now for sure. Why do we think hes gonna be the last . Do not jinx it. Authoritarianism is having a moment. Dictatorship is going to feel like they are on their way back. Why do we think he will be the last one in europe . That said, the people of belarus seem like they are kind of done with him. In august, as we were going up for our own president ial election last year, you wish ankle was facing his elections he allowed. He did one dictators do. He had been for example been thrown into prison. When he didnt expect was that that Candidates Wife that he was running against, the teacher who had never been involved in politics before, she took up the banner, and ran for president in her husbands place, while her husband was in prison. Citizens of belarus one to polls in august, and it kind of seems like she might have won. And so, how does a Dictator Respond to that . So, how doesthe elections arend to be real, theyre supposed to be for. Show the shang could declared victory for himself and said it was a landslide overwhelming victory which everybody agreed was not true. People turned out in the streets, by at least the hundreds of thousands if not millions, protesting. Biggest protests ever belarus protesting against the infamous dictatorship they were stuck. And protesting against a faulty musk falls democracy they were playing in which is now an observer level result. If he won, i guess he won. Millions of people protested, Tens Of Thousands of people were arrested. Some died in custody. Hundreds of people made credible allegations of torture by police in custody. There are videos like this of force confessions by people who are showing the signs of being beaten. A woman holding up this photo here. This is one who ran against love Shank Oh. This is a photo of someone who was beaten very badly after being arrested for taking part in the protest. The candidate, she is in exile now. She used to live in lithuania. All the Opposition Ventilators have all been arrested or chased out of the country since the Election One against lev shinkle. Put up the previous picture though. Look which hes holding up there. You see the photo of a very injured man. I know thats hard to see. The photo is water marked, it has words written on it and a pattern and diagonal. I initially thought those are tattoos or something on the guy that was beaten. Its not. Its a Media Outlet Water mark. Nexta and he ex tsa. Next up is an Opposition Media in belarus which has only been able to survive because its leadership has also fled the country. Its editor who was also in exile in lithuania, hes 26 years old. He was officially designated by lukashenko as a terrorist in november. Designated a terrorist for running a Media Outlet that had the severity to report on the protest on that countrys dictator. Media outlets that published photos like that one of how people were abused after they were arrested. This weekend, the dictator in belarus, lukashenko sent up a Fighter Jet. A Fighter Jet to intercept a commercial Passenger Plane that had taken off from greece and was flying to lithuania. Theres Eu Countries and it was overt Bella Races airspace. The Fighter Jet forced the plane to land inside of belarus and the 26 yearold then took off that plane was that young man whos the editor of nexta the Media Outlet. The young man that lukashenko had designated a terrorist for the crime of him running a Media Outlet that covered the protests. They arrested that young man on the tarmac and took him into custody at belarus. He turned up in a forced Confession Video Today obviously under duress and bruised confession in weird technical language hes never used before to all the things lukashenko has charged him with. Absolutely terrifying to see it. And you know, in an autocracy, and a dictatorship i know were trying to expect anything but we almost never expect something this dramatic, right . Something affecting this many countries. Something this violent divide of how the world is supposed to run. Theres plenty of bad leaders and poorly run countries around the world and very few were random Passenger Planes minding their own business are threatened to be shot down by Military Force just for being there. Theyre not even taking off from the country are landing there. Theyre just flying over it. Im in response to what lukashenko did, the European Union is now blocked any belarusian planes from entering into our Space Or Landing in Eu Airports and theyre calling on all European Airlines to stay out of belarus is airspace indefinitely which right. Since butlers which will use its military to hijack aircrafts with civilians. Again, this was a ryan Air Jet that was forced down. The ceo of the company called would happen a, quote, state sponsored hijacking. Ryan air is an airline that is based in ireland. The irish foreign Minister Today called it aviation piracy. Some piracy. State sponsored terrorism. State sponsored hijacking. What do we do about that . How do we fix that . I mean, its consequential stuff for the whole world. Whether or not you identify with a and baylor is or want them to get rid of the dictator. Whether youve even heard of belarus. What does this mean about the world and how we move about it . Between russian Military Equipment being used to shoot down a civilian airliner over ukraine in 2014 and now russian allied Military Equipment being used to force down a Passenger Plane over belarus. Passenger aviation is having to do some weird stuff now to avoid former soviet airspace. Just logistically ridiculous right . Commercial Passenger Airplanes now have to stay away from ukraine because some russian missile might shoot you down there and now they have to stay away from belarus because some russian made Fighter Jet might force you down. Belarus and ukraine are big countries. Air travel routes over that part of Europe In Asia are going to have to be as roundabout weird as the Shipping Routes all of a sudden to avoid the horde of somali pirates. And i know this is all far away stuff but i think sometimes it does make it easier for us as americans to see these dynamics at work. Timothy snider, a History Professor whos the officer of On Tyranny and ive talked about short pocket sized practical bible for resisting rising authoritarianism. He had this to say about it which i found really hopeful. He said, quote, no matter how important you are its unlikely that a dictator has scramble the Fighter Plane to force down a Passenger Flight just so he can arrest you. This just happened that the young belarusian journalist ronan. He is important because he told the truth about his own country. Last august the belarusian dictator sought to stage yet another victoria victory. His usual tactic of disqualifying and arresting opponents was not working. The wife of one of his opponents ran against him and almost certainly one. Sometimes it is easier to say these things from far away. Then it is to see them right here in front of us. Joining us now is timothy snider, professor of history at yale university. Hes the best Selling Author of On Tyranny, 20 lessons from the 20th century. Its a pleasure to have you here tonight thank you so much. Very glad. You talk about democracy being a global phenomenon that rises and falls in a global way and the necessity of people seeing democratic movements that work both as an inspiration and as essentially shoring up our courage to do it ourselves. Given, that in the face of this flagrant, flagrant sort of offense in belarus, what is the right way for people who support democracy to Stand Up for and for democracy here . Well i think youve already made the basic point really beautifully which is that if we want to have democracy we have to have facts and if we want to have facts we have to have the people who produce facts. This is a problem all around the world, as you say its a problem we might see more sharply in our own case if we first noticed it abroad. Of course, it seems really extreme to have a dictator scramble a jet in order to arrest, object, and now punish one journalist. But weve had a president who referred to journalist as eminem east of the people. We are not belarus but we have far too few journalists who are paid good salaries to cover local news. Thats one of our biggest problems as a country. So i think one thing we can do is recognize these people. We call them dissidents when there are broad but we dont respect them at home. We can recognize these people for the courageous and heroic necessary work that they do. When it comes to belarus, i think we have to recognize that belarus is in a neighborhood. This thing which just happened is of course an outrage and the economy will be punished for it but theres no way that this could have happened without russia. Theres no way this could have happened without at the very least russian permission. By talking about voters were missing that larger international question because what we said at the beginning that Democracy Rises answer nationally, it also falls internationally. And russia has that very much in mind and of Course Russia is just as concerned if not more so about greatest generalists report about democracy, who report on protests of democracy and who lead a legible record for their own country, for people on their own country and around the world. Talking with the staff of the Show Today about this story and about this topic, we talked a lot about Press Freedom and small democracy and some of the dots have been trying to connect here but what are the other things people are raising to me which really stuck with me is that it does feel scary and unsettling to see the degree to which authoritarians particularly those aligned with or in the model of Vladimir Putin or putting himself, their willingness to use force against their own people or against people they perceive as enemies anywhere in the world. This willingness to assassinate dissidents or go after people in britain, in germany, even in the united states. The fact that this was a plane that was flying between greece and lithuania, to Eu Countries. That was never the forest down. Full of civilians who had nothing to do with belarus. It feels like there is this emboldening thing thats happening with authoritarian,s particularly along the Put Model thats a real task for the west in terms of how much they can get away with outside of their own borders. Yes, absolutely. On The One hand, these men are in a very fragile position. Lukashenko, and even putin are not popular anymore. Lukashenkos case, he lost an election to someone he never thought he could lose an election to. And putins, case hes facing a parliamentary election in september which at least by the standards he expects hes also going to lose. So on one side, they are fragile and so theyre very fertility, its a very fragility which demands that theres some kind of spectacular success abroad. It was interesting to watch russian propaganda admire lukashenko for the boldness of what he did right. Where is the rest of the world is condemning it and the russians are saying its a wonderful thing, we wish we wouldve done it. Its as combination where there we can therefore they have to act abroad as though there are strong. Theyre losing at home but around the world, democracy in general is weakening and so if youre in a democracy, you cant take it for granted. You have to realize that youre in a fight and the values you are asserting had nothing to do with the way the world has to be. You have to build them out into the world and in a dramatic case like this theres a real opportunity to do something dramatic which im afraid were about to miss. Timothy snider, the author of On Tyranny, professor of history at yale university. Professor snyder, thank you very much for your time this evening. I was happy to talk to you about this tonight. Whatever else happens in our lives, it will always be true that we collectively have lived through a really quite unprecedented moment in american history in which, the immediate past President Of The United States had to pardon his national security, advisory foreign policy, advisory and Deputy Chair of his inaugural, and Campaign Chairman, went to, president and his personal lawyer went to, president his other personal lawyers is under federal Criminal Investigation, and he himself personally is seen five press and multiple federal felonies. He himself personally is currently, as we speak, under active Criminal Investigation into states. This is our life, congratulations. This is what we have done. But even amidst that, being indicted, and or admitted in coasts conspirators of the former president , who wants to be president again, his Campaign Chairman specifically still manages to stand out, and is still making news today. You will recall, his name is Paul Manafort he was convicted of Tax Fraud and Bank Fraud and secret payments he got from his former employer. A pro putin authoritative leader of the ukraine. He served as small Prison Sentence before trump pardon him out of office on his way out of office. There is enduring out of his with Robert Mueller and why it collapsed. He had lied about a whole bunch of things. In lying to them, that voided his deal, avoided the Cooperation Deal he had made with them. The judge looked at all the evidence of that and agreed with the prosecutors. That Court Episode of that has remained unredacted, until now. Remainedthey sought to Lock Up E The Key Run Away from his plea deal. He was a really cooperating since he was continuing to lie to them. In the process of trying to get that done, muellers lead prosecutor, Andrew Weizmann, told the judge that Paul Manafort had Quote A series of lies about manafort had told a series of lies that were redacted. Speaking about those lies, weisman told the court quote, the issue of blank, blank, blank is in the core of what it is that the Special Counsel is supposed to be investigating. Of course the core of what the Special Counsel was investigating are connections between the Trump Investigation and Russia And Russia trying to help trump win. Thats what we have. Now, the court has released less redacted versions of that transcript. So now we know today, in black and white, white Trumps Cane trumps Campaign Chair lied to prosecutors about. The pain of federal prison time for doing. Then heres Andrew Weizmann speaking to the judge to the judge that is constant teen colin nick, the u. S. Say isnt russian t russian manafort lied to prosecutors about the nature of the data he was sharing. It wasnt internal, valuable data, that was a lie. Also, he lied about whether he was giving it to someone he knew would pass it on to the russian government. Heres the judge, quote heres the judge, quote why would donald trumps criminal linked Campaign Share be sharing protected Information Polling data with the russian Intelligence Intelligence Agency why russia was carrying out and then tack to get him elected . That was one half the Mueller Investigation was about. What russia did to the election to try to get trump to be president and what we thought happened happen. Trumps Campaign Chair, Paul Manafort sharing this with the russian Intelligence Agency is the proverbial smoking gun. Giving Russia Material they could use to target their interference on trumps behalf, which they then did. Andrew weizmann, the prosecutor who led the case against paul joins us now. Newly unredacted profilings and transcripts started to be released on friday, and continued to be released over the course of today. They reveal that trumps 2016 Campaign Chairman, Paul Manafort, lied to prosecutors repeatedly about handing over sensitive internal Trump Campaign Polling data, to a russian intelligence officer. A man named constitution kilimnik. Documents unredacted today show kilimnik bragging on at least eight separate occasions about him having access to internal nonpublic Trump Polling data. One part of the transcript that we are just seeing today they say, with Andrew Weizmann saying what was provided to this in August 2020 . At the crucial Turning Point in the Trump Campaign will russia was trying to work to get trump elected. They were at a meeting where they specifically talked about Battleground States, the voters they wanted to appeal to their. And they are talking about trends, or trend is all over the data. Joining us now is Andrew Weizmann. A former Senior Agent of Andrew Weizmanns team. Hes the author of where law in. Inside the Mueller Investigation. Mr. Weizmann, great to see you. Thank you for joining us tonight. Nice to be here. Nice to be here. I know that there are parts, you have to be careful, i know the you real and president i know you take the seriously, i want you to talk about anything you dont want quickly to talk about by the ethical constraints that you are under. With that said, at the time you were detailing manaforts lies to the court in 2019 and could see so much more of that now with these new redactions, we have learned since then that he was passing on Polling Data to the russian intelligence surfaces. You told the court of the time that the Polling Data was about Battleground States and the Word Trend was all over the data. How should we understand the point you are making to the court there, what should we take away from that given that Puck Book Information we had since then . Well, there was a group of people that focused on Paul Van for that if there was supposed to be coordination with russia by members of the Trump Campaign the saw was that Paul Manaforts team was the most likely person not that there wouldnt be other efforts are attempts that which were documented whether it was roger stone or in the Trump Tower Meeting in ukraine as you noted the russian regime seems like the likely target. In the meeting, starting in August 2nd and going till passed the election and the actual inauguration where we saw not only what it was in the Trump Campaign but there was also discussion of what it was that russia wanted in return, which was an effort to take over half of ukraine which was discussed before the election and after the election. So there was quite a lot of data there that you noted. One of the things that we learned from recently as we did not know what they did with the data. We had strong suspicions that he would pass it on to russian intelligence officers but thats now been confirmed by this Administration And One has this patients about where that came from. But its now been stoned by what clinic did with this. Can you talk about the suspicions a little bit . It is interesting that you and the Special Counsels office was able to figure out that manafort had given the stuff to kilimnik. As you said, you did not determine or say anything about kilimnik did to it but you have this declarative statement now from the dni. From the biden Administration Intelligence Community saying what kilimnik did was he gave its a russian intelligence which of course was running the operation to try to elect trump. Why do you think the biden administration was able to declare that to be able to publicly confirm that now . So this is just what i would say is foreign speculation, but i dont have anything inside bases for this but i would assume that came from that knew the information at the time of our investigation did not want to come forward, given that trump was the president and they waited until he was out of office to share that with american intelligence and they said i dont know thats in fact what happened but that would be an explanation for why it is that american intelligence was able to learn this so quickly. And rachel, one thing i would point out is in the first segment on belarus i think that this story and the story you told about muellers are actually quite connected because we like to think that were quite different than belarus but its really just a story of corruption and in our Electoral System about facts being undermined by the president s use of the pardon power. The inability to get to the bottom of exactly what happened due to obstructive conduct by various people. There really is an unfortunate parallel between your first segment and this one. Yes, and unfortunately doesnt even have to be an analogy. And this case, were talking about some of the same players involved in the same kind of corruption just in different parts of the world. Andrew weizmann, former senior member of Robert Muellers team. Former fbi general counsel, and its great to have you. Thank you. Thanks so much rachel. All right, weve got more ahead tonight. For a full week, the cuckoo for cocoa pucks made up audit of the president ial Election Results in arizona has been put on hold.
