Designed to basically to find out what was going on and republicans stopped it even if their own lives are at risk. The house will establish a select committee on the January 6th Insurrection. The timeline will be as long as it takes for them and they need to do the investigation of the causes o f this. Speaker pelosi fleching on Mitch Mcconnell for blocking an independent commission into people that wanted to kill them all . It is imperative that we establish the truth of that day and ensure the attack of that kind cant happen and we root out the causes of it all. It is clear that republicans are afraid of the truth. This committee will have Subpoena Power so they can hold any witnesses with questions of who knew what and when and focusing on trumps role. The Department Of Justice released new body camera video. I want to warn you this video is disturbing. 500 have been charged in federal court in connection of the terror attack. A guilty plea for conspiracy and construction. Joining me now is Michelle Goldberg and ellie missell. I am going to start with you, so we got 500 people who have been under investigation and they have been arrested. How far do you think is going to go . I am as comport as the next person the people trying to overthrow this country being brought in. You have people walking out with just probations. How many of these 500 people do you speculate may actually see jail time for attempting to overthrow america. You are starting with 500. Still 800 people breached the capitol. 35 of yall got off. Very strong words for what hes going to do but what he did do was now she spreads some stuff of black lives matter. If i may play the Jason Johnson of this show today my concern is that we are not doing enough to stop these people. Select committees are great. They have Subpoena Power. You know who else have it . The committee, don mcgahn showed up yesterday after dodging two years. I am not psyched with this select committee. I am still unconvinced that had mayor garland are going to bring the conspiracy charges necessarily to punish these people. With that in mind, juanita, we had the judge yesterday, when the judge hands out the ruling, he said look, it is utterly ridiculous when you had members of congress who said this was a tourist trip and people were hanging out and apparently we had some judges of how ridiculous this is. This happens to be a judge who cares about americans have common sense. What do you think is going to be the results once some of these people end up in front of judges that are Donald Trumpor selected. Who may give statements encouraging future behaviors. Thats something we should be concerned about. And i want to remind you that this is the judge that told the defendants sentences that hes cutting these people a break. We know black people have faced worst penalties for sitting at the corner store. These are people who walking into the capitol building. It is the epiphany of White Privilege to go i am embarrassed and i did the wrong thing even though i posted that, i had a great effin time on the day but now i am contrite and thats why i should not get six months of jail time. These judges need to get it together and hold these people accountable. I am looking at pelosis select committee to hold elect members accountable for their effort in riling up these crowds. There are gop members tweeted today is like 1776, be prepared to defend the white house, lets do this for trump. A lot needs to come out of the select committee. I think we can uncover a degree of truth thats going to have an impact on the american public. Pelosi says this is going to go for as long as it is going to take. I am sure republicans are cringing at the idea of this is going to be a drum beat situation going into 2022. You can hear these people who got busted, oh, i read a book and now i know slightly better. I watched season four of the wire and now i realized i am wrong. I dont think thats going to work. Come on. Michelle, i want to ask you this, we are going to focus on pelosi putting the evidence on the committee. The values of these committee is twofold, one, we can find out more information about the people who try to overthrow the country. They are also communication, there are performance art. What kind of people do the democrats need to put on the committee to make sure we are getting those kind of loud, viral jim jordan moment so the Republican Party is complicit of the attack that happened. It is not just about performance. If you look back at the Benghazi Committee arguably, we would have had president presidency. The fact she had these emails on the server that we heard about in 2016 and 2017. We had two impeachments, both had a number of superb prosecutor in the house. The job in the committee is not just have these these 500 cases are going to give us a fraction of what happened that day. In order to give us a holistic version. Donald trump, the people who set up that rally. The members of congress encouraged him and look at what was going on at the white house as it became clear there had been this breach and we were on decapitation of a branch of government. In order to get that picture, you need basically people who are skilled investigators and legal fighters. You are right that don mcgahn was able to resist for two years but eventually he was not. This is going to go on for a long time. Juanita, when we have this committee together thinking of it from a Community Strategy standpoint. Where do you want to start . Does pelosi want to drag men and women who may be under investigation already. Where do you think of a good starting place . Lay the ground work for what they need in 2022. Where should they start . It is about perspective, setting the individuals who were in the building that day and showing the threat they faced and costodial workers. When you start to paint the full picture of what was happening behind the scenes, what trump was tweeting before and after when they decided to move the rally day 2w0 january 6th. When you sta right turn to fill that in, it all comes back to. This was the active threat people are facing. Ot only the tangible threats but the threats who are our democracy which we know it is still under attack through voter depression bill. And so, tieing all of that together under the Perspective Setting of this was an active threat of humans and our democracy is going to be a big deal. So, ellie, i like the idea of the committee, i think this is a good mood. I had a feeling that pelosi is going to do this after everything failed in the nate. The idea of how far democrats are going to go. Symbolically, do you think the House Democrats are committed to not only putting out subpoenas, but hey, you have to show up. My concern going into this is it is a brilliant idea but if everyone found their nose at this committee then it is a bunch of members of congress are talking among themselves. How long do they need to go to make it effective . They have to go all the way. Lets put it on the table right now. The democrats will not go far enough with these things. I am happy for them to do it themselves. I dont see why we have yorng yorng i dont see democrats willing to do that and not to blow up anybody particular spot but to employee up all of our spots collectively, the media is not ready to back them up either. One of the reasons michelle pointed out about benghazi was correct. The emails they uncovered. That worked because the media did won millions and billions of stories about millions of stupid emails. Is the media going to put the select committee on tv and focusing on the empty chair that we learned where Marjorie Taylor greene to be seating . Are they going to do that . Thats part of the problem. It is not just democrats unwillingness to go. It is the ability to get board when the government i isover thrown. We are concerned because it is not bipartisan. Are you hearing anything like that . Or people are like lets go ahead with it, pelosi have the right idea. The reporting that i have seen talked about fears that wont appear to bipartisan. It is not attributed those fears to begin. I am sure there are some democrats who are going to be spooked it is why republicans decided to take this gamble. It is really is a gamble. Republicans agreed to i think they have to embrace the fact that yes, people are going to call it, theyre going to say it is not bipartisan and they have to be why is that . Why is that only democrats have been willing to lead an investigation into january 6th when we extended a hand and you slapped it away. I think they have to do, you not, not be worried about it. I think most people care about this commission. Exactly. They got power now. Michelle goldberg and michelle. Thank you so much for joining us on the show. We have a deal a huge historic moment, biden meeting with a Bipartisan Group today on jobs and infrastructures sawing they reached the deal but there is a catch. 600 billion for bridges and roads but leaves out a ton of what progressives want, nothing on climate change. Look, the bipartisan bill from the beginning was understood, there is going to be a second part of it and not just signing the bipartisan bill. We need physical infrastructure but we also need the Human Infrastructure as well. They are apart of my overall plan. Here is the thing. The senate had been talking about infrastructure, reconciliation second. The danger that manchin and sinema would vote yes on infrastructure. Pelosi says she wont allow a vote until after reconciliation passes. There aint going to be no unless we are going to have a reconciliation. Plain and simple. Dont start, no bill wont be no bill. Joining me now is Cornell Belcher and libby casey. Libby, i am going to start with you. I want to play this sound and get your thought on the other side. Progressives calling on biden to go faster and bigger and harder than do it alone without republicans if need be. I know there are some of my party discouraged me to seek an agreement with the republican progress. Libby, joe biden, he hears what democrats want. But, within the white house, are they satisfy that this deal on infrastructure speaks well for future deal they may be able to make or theyre trying to get points on the board. President biden has told the American People that he can work across the isle. It is a lot of what he campaigned on and trying to show americans the sense of unity at a time america. Theyre going to be pushing for that that other track to keep him continuing. The Infrastructure Bill could pass with 60 votes potentially. Okay, you got that one . On the other hand, you got this Reconciliation Bill that had so Many Democrats priorities. We are talking about they only need that 51 votes, thank you Vice President harris to get them over the finish line. Senator sinema is on board and some of the facings you saw today, the democrats have to be together as a block. President biden had to talk to a couple of members who wont be joining him about liberals ch. There are a numb of senators who are i saying, look, we have this bigger package and following through a democratic party. I am going to play some sound from two of those senators and get your thoughts from the other side. Way too small. It has to be cop biened with a second much more robust, at adequate r quit package. We have had to have the whole they think and not just little pieces. Bigger, bad every, faster and stroller. If the democrats are not able to get through a reasonable number of things to conciliation. Is that going to harm them down the road . That umt what it is going to boil down to. Can they convince other democrats that if you dont get Ericson Silluation that you will. It is problematic. Democrats dont want ne of i think it is problematic in that way. It is take what you can get and when you can get it and come back for more. Of course senators are going to say we want more and we want all these other things. Because thats politics. Ty would be crazy not to. And negotiate with. I got to tell you this. That image of bipartisan senators standing with biden. That, my friend is political goal. It is all that americans want and what they believe in joe biden is that hes a guy that can work across the area. Lord knows, i worked for a by whos struggled to get anywhere. This guy is standing in front of the white house around a really and we can argue, it is not everything in it and im siting here watching d. C. With bridges falling down. Americans are going to take whatever Infrastructure Bill they can because it bakes them more activitity and it makes your life better. I think it is a big victory for president biden. [ ding ] we have evidence of how they flipped the votes and how it was designed to flip the votes. The machines can be hacked. There is no question about that. We are going to clean this mess now. President trump won by a landslide. We are going to prove it. Joining me now is John Flannery who works with Rudy Giuliani in the Southern District of new york. I have to start with this because i find all of this bizarre and strange and i dont know how all of these have not lost their licenses at this point. Rudy giulianis argument was i was just sharing what witnesses said. Everything i said about this case comes from a witness. Sometimes two or three witnesses. I have a woman whos willing to testify that she was taught how to cheat by Democrat Party in detroit. You got to listen to this in other words his argument is basically like the other people lied to me so i am just lying for them. Does that work in court unless it is night court or something . It may delay the conviction in a few minutes but it ends up in the same place. I am told the number of prosecutions in which you have the i dont know perjury. Usually you can prove that. Everything around it except the incident they claim not to remember which is exculpatory. He made a big mistake here. When he was in pennsylvania and this is why new york has a stake. It was because he had a new york license and appeared in pennsylvania. When he was talking to the court, he was saying fraud, fraud, fraud, and the court at one point said, well, was that in your complaint and he said at first it was and then it was not. That in itself was a lie. It even said joe frazier is still voting in 2021. When he died in 2012 for a couple of months he was on the role. His lies are petty and big. 75 of republicans think the election was stolen because of his lies. This had an effect. When they say in new york we are going to suspend you, they are suspending you and may gave you a chance to rebut it. What he says is so dangerous. At the end of the day there is a good chance it will be disbarred. I would like to think that this is the spring of the reckoning and we are able to surface the reckoning. America is nuts for somebody that actually be punished for the wrongs they have done. Rudy giuliani at the top, right next to trump and several other people. So, john, and i hear you and clearly when ever Rudy Giuliani gets in trouble. It is Somebody Else and he initially goes to the shaggy defense, it was not me, it was Somebody Else. The danger he caused by spreading the lies and what the consequences the have been. I want to play a quick sound byte in his own words questioning the election. Well talk about it on the other side. Those are the ballots that were stuck in the machine eight or nine or ten times. I dont know what the vote in michigan is. Our vote is owned by two if they claim this election, why dont they make all the machines available immediately . The same argument being made by democratic activists and organizers all said they were crazy. John, after hearing Something Like this, what kind of defense . The suspension now he could be disbarred. What would be the line . What else does Rudy Giuliani have to do to be disbarred in new york . Well, we have a limp of prosecutorial team. What we really have is an interference in the election of the 2016 elections and the 2020 elections and every place in between and cover up to avoid it. Nobody is punished for it. It is not enough to ring your hands to say oh, you should not do it and we do nothing for it. No man is above the law and plainly these guys are. I wish the Southern District and the das office and georgia would do it. We Start Talking about rioters. Lets look at what the intelligence people were doing or not doing. Thats the big case, it is not about the rioters, theyre the facility for incitement and insurrection. Really quick. Now that Rudy Giulianis license is suspended, does this mean conversations he had with people have no Attorney Client privilege . Would that be an opening . Few of the conversations we would be interested, Attorney Client privilege in the past through the president even while hes suspended. If i talk to him now, his license is suspended, can he advise me . A, i dont ask and b, why would you ask . Nobody would listen. John flannery, thank you so much for your time. I appreciate it. We did hear screams but i could not tell where they were coming from the rubble or the apartments . She was there. She was an amazing person. It is not fair. It feels like a horrible nightmare, it is not for real. Joining me now is miamidade commissioner, thank you so much and my condolences for those who are suffering and those who are left with anxiety right now. This building is termed to be unstable about a year ago. I have to ask how common is that . Is it common to have buildings that were built in the 70s or 80s, to be deemed not safe. How common is this . Good question. The answer is for this it is considered some what Young Building and young structure. We have a 40year inspection thats a standard as far as a year ago and hearing that the building was deemed unstable, i heard that the first time. I am a County Commissioner in this area. This is the first time i am hearing about it and we have brand new structures and older structures surrounding this complex. Good disgraces. Thank you so much. Turning now to nbcs vaughan hilliard. The County Commissioner just said this was considered a Young Building, it was built in 91. It may be older than you or some of us, i got to imagine a lot of buildings in that city built in the 60s and 70s, the foremost concern is half of this collapse. The 40 of that complex, the gas have been shut off here in the surrounding areas and hotels and across the way. There were also all evacuated here because of the concerns about the infrastructure here that led to this, this morning. Frankly we dont know, was it a Gas Explosion or a sinkhole of sorts or more of an infrastructure here. We know there are concerns of this particular building of cracks in the wall. Was there also issues with rustling steal or concrete structure. Building collapse like this is not normal. What we do know is there is still a Search Operation here. There are 99 individuals presently unaccountable for at this time. They added up the number of individuals who normally would be staying there over night. Thats how they got to that 99 number. It is a tough afternoon for the search crew here. I can imagine that vaughan. I want to follow this real quick. Of 99, is there hopes, maybe they are trapped in part of the building that was collapsed or people underground trying to survive with water and air or did they think somebody was not home because they were working late. Whats the timeline for trying to find some of these 99 people . Thats exactly the case. Reporter there is hope that some also you are dealing with the fact that we know there are six citizens who were here, we also know there were three columbian citizens that were here. Thats where these officials are trying to go. They ask folks to reach out and call because theyre trying to get a true sense of how many individuals here. We have seen in earthquakes past where individuals able to find and survive within these small pockets and able to find some avenues of oxygen here but again i cant underscore the unfortunate circumstances this afternoon were difficult. There was a thunderstorm that held up operation and there was a fire smoldering here which there is a large plume of smoke that made its way through the course about an hour here. Vaughan, thank you for bringing this story to us. Thank you very much. Coming up, matt gaetzs mistakes, the federal sex crime probe, i will explain. George floyds killer sentenced tomorrow. Were back on the eve of the sentening of former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin. Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison after being found guilty of seconddegree unintentional murder, thirddegree murder and seconddegree manslaughter in the death of george floyd. That killing sparking nationwide protests and demands for Police Reform over the treatment of Black Americans by law enforcement. Joining me now is msnbc correspondent and host of the into america podcast, trymaine lee. Youre out with a new podcast in the wake of George Floyds murder. First your thoughts on the eve of this sentencing. Whats on your mind right now . Yeah, jason, thanks for having me, man. This is a big deal tomorrow. To see Derek Chauvin finally delivered some form of justice. But i would want folks to understand they might need to temper that i expectations here. While the maximum for seconddegree unintentional murder is 40 years, someone with a clean background rarely gets that much. The prosecution has asked for 30 years. The defense team has asked for probation. So its likely that it will fall somewhere between that. Also folks should remember that in minneapolis, if we assume that Derek Chauvin will behavior properly and have Good Behavior in prison, hell be out in twothirds of that time. So if he gets 30 years, hell only spend 20 with Good Behavior. I know folks are weighing this moment. Is this a moment of true accountability, is it justice, is it just someone who tortured and murdered someone in public getting their just due or not . Well see tomorrow. Its a big day. Followup, do they have any sort of truth in sentencing . Like is he going to have to serve at least a certain amount one way or another . As a former Police Officer, theyre not going to put him in gen pop. So is there any minimum that he would have to serve whether he had any Good Behavior or not . I dont know. I dont know that answer. But wed have to assume that there will be special circumstances made for him. Im not sure what the actual law is in minneapolis. But again, hes facing special circumstances as a former Police Officer, but also the nature of his crime. Youd imagine they wouldnt want to have him sitting in gen pop. As you said, that could be dangerous. So you have a brand new podcast called into america, which im a big fan of your writing and your reporting in general. Tell us a little bit about this podcast and some of these early episodes, what youre focusing on and what youre bringing to the American People with it. Thank you so much. This is our glimpse into america. But we also speak through the lens of the black american experience. On this weeks episode we do something that you rary ever see. We are two black men here in media having this conversation. But in this space what we did was i got a black activist and a black Police Officer to engage on this idea of what reform actually looks like, could it look like. The black Police Officer says, you know what, reform has to come from the inside. And then the activist said this and i think this is great perspective. He said ask black cops to reform the system from the inside is like asking the oversear to reform slavery. The overseer is in no position to reform slavery. Ive got a question for the sergeant. In the 23 years that youve been on the force, have you ever held a single Cop Accountable for wrongdoing . Me personally, yes, as a sergeant, yes. All the time. But is it common . No, of course not. Because thats the issue. Its like, its weird to hear you say that other people gotta hold police accountable, when all you got to do is slap some handcuffs on somebody when you see them doing wrong whether theyre a cop or not. Right. And we just dont see that happening. We just dont see accountability. But again to have this conversation with two black men on either side of the conversation, really there was one thing they had in common. They both want the best for the black community and black people and believe that something has to change. One believes that he could tinker with the machine from the inside. The other says you may have to dismantle this whole machine. How did the officer im fascinated by this conversation. Im on the abolish the police side. How did the officer respond to that . Did he understand what sort of the activist was saying or is he like, look, man, thats crazy. This is the only way we can work with that. How did he respond to that difference in opinion . He understood. On one hand this officer you have some officers who are blue first and not black. This officer is a black man first so he understands. He says that one of the issues is that the system does not care about the pressure from the outside. It only cares about what happens on the inside. And when you talk about defunding, they say the officer would say youre going to take money out of my pocket but when theres a guy with a gun you still want me to show up. You know, there might be some circumstances where the guys with the guns dont need to show up so hes not totally against the idea of redistributing some funding to other programs, but he says the bulk of officers are going to feel like the work is still having to be done and youll call me when the stuff hits the fan.
