fast track a vote on banning bump stocks following the supreme court's controversial decision to make them legal again. and we'll have new reporting on just what donald trump is looking for in a possible running mate as we're now less than a month away from the republican national convention. good morning and welcome to "way too early" on this tuesday, june 18th. i'm jonathan lemire. thanks for starting your day with us. a lot of news to get to this morning. we'll begin here. president biden will take new executive action today that will remove the threat of deportation for hundreds of thousands of people who are married to united states citizens. the program known as parole in place would apply to about a half a million undocumented immigrants. it would allow them to stay in the country while applying for green card status. the current law requires them to return to their home countries to start such a process, which can take years to complete. to qualify new applicants must have lived in the u.s. for at least ten years as of yesterday. the president will also announce an executive action that will allow daca recipients and other dreamers to quickly receive work visas if they have graduated from a higher education institution and have a high-skilled job offer in their area of study. meanwhile, the biden campaign is calling out donald trump for saying he would take questions after a speech in detroit over the weekend and then leaving without doing so. in a video posted to twitter x yesterday the campaign played the two moments back-to-back in response to trump attacking biden for allegedly never taking questions from reporters. >> at the end of the speech i'll be taking some questions, so this is different than joe biden. he isn't taking any questions. ♪♪ >> additionally, the white house is joining the biden campaign in pushing back against recent video clips that have gone viral online that make president biden look as though he's confused during the public events in other appearances. white house press secretary karine jean pierre blasted the misuse of the edited videos which is made to make the president look bad. >> they are cheap fakes videos. they are done in bad faith, and some of your news organization have been very clear -- have stressed that these right-wing -- the right-wing critics of the president have a credibility problem because of the fact checkers have repeatedly caught them pushing misinformation, disinformation. i think that it tells you everything that we need to know about how -- how desperate -- how desperate republicans are here. and instead of talking about the president's performance in office -- and what i mean by that is his legislative wins, what he's been able to do for the pattern people across the country, we're seeing these deep fakes, these manipulated videos. and it is, again, done in bad faith. >> the republican account, rnc research, that had been circulating many of these cheap fakes reacted to the white house on social media claiming the videos unedited and promised to keep posting them. last week "the washington post" posted an video online about these cheap fakes. the posts show the edited clips alongside the original source videos or from different angles revealing how they were altered or manipulated. but there is growing concern that attempts to fact check these videos may not be able to keep up with the spread of the deceptive clips online. elsewhere in washington, a bill aimed at banning bump stocks could come to the senate floor as early as today. the vote is in direct response to a ruling from the supreme court last week that voided a trump administration era federal ban on bump stocks and other gun accessories that allow rifles to fire quicker. senate majority leader chuck schumer will seek to fast track the legislation hoping to pass it through a unanimous consent vote. the trump administration imposed the ban after a 2017 las vegas mass shooting that killed nearly 60 people and injured hundreds of others. the shooter at that country music festival used bump stock-equipped guns to open fire. senator schumer referenced the tragedy when he announced the vote. >> the maga supreme court is now even further to the right of donald trump, who's very hard right himself, so this week the senate will step in to try to fix the chaos the maga court just unleashed. passing a bill banning bump stocks should be the work of five minutes. most americans support this step. poll after poll show that a majority of people including independents support restrictions on ar-15-style rifles, which are what bump stocks are designed to emulate. shouldn't we all agree that preventing another tragedy like las vegas is just plain common sense and a good thing? >> democratic senator jackie rosen, who's up for re-election in nevada this november, is criticizing republican senator j.d. vance for remarks he made yesterday about bump stocks. vance, who is widely seen as one of donald trump's top vp contenders called leader shumer's efforts to ban the devices a distraction. take a look. >> look, i think that we have to ask ourselves what is the real gun violence problem in this country? and my very strong suspicion is this legislation is aimed at a pr problem, not something that's going to meaningfully reduce gun violence in this country. >> this is not a fake problem. let him come to las vegas. let him see -- let him see the memorial for those people who died. let him talk to those families. las vegas was changed forever because of what the shooter did and the bump stocks helped him. and let j.d. vance come, and i'm going to take him to the memorials, talk about our first responders, our ambulance drivers, our police, firefighters, people at the blood bank, regular people. shame on him. shame on him for disrespecting the dead and why they're dead. >> elsewhere, house speaker mike johnson paid a visit to donald trump at mar-a-lago yesterday. the pair met with republican national committee chairman to reportedly discuss campaign strategy as house republicans try to hold onto their razor thin majority in the chamber. johnson posted this picture on social media writing in part "i am confident we will send president trump back to the white house, win back the senate and grow our house republican majority." shortly after meeting, trump went to truth social to offer up multiple endorsements for republicans expected to face close races this fall. joining us now congressional reporter for the hill, good morning. thanks for being here. let's start there, the meeting between johnson and trump, it comes on the heels of trump's trip to washington where he urged marjorie taylor greene and others to back off johnson, let him keep his job. what can you say we should read into this as to the state of the republican party? >> yeah, a lot of face time between speaker mike johnson and former president trump just in the last week as you mentioned, both yesterday in mar-a-lago and last week in washington. i think this is two pronged, jonathan. "a," first off, republicans are trying to show their reunited in november. the past year and a half of the # 118th congress has been marked by chaos, whether it's chaos in the conference, in the speakership, mccarthy losing the speakership, having to find a new one. when you look at the fringes, those against trump, who are for trump, sort of seeing them work through that dynamic, this past year and a half was mark by gop dysfunction. top republican leaders now are trying to show they're on the same page as we're now about five months out of from the election, so that's the first thing. and "b," we've heard speaker johnson say this on a number of occasions, he wants to prepare for the case republicansvise, the trifecta come next year, control the white house, the house, and the senate. johnson has said he doesn't want to put the cart ahead of the horse. he said that multiple times, but nonetheless he wants to prepare if republicans get that trifecta. it's both showing that unity, "a," and showing they're able to govern and they have plans to get that trifecta next year. >> we shall see what happens in november. let's go back to the bump stocks vote. schumer trying to call this now it comes on the heels of some folks that had ivf or birth control, which he knew would lose but want to get republicans on record. is this simply another show vote, sore there are a chance this could happen? >> this is thing that has bipartisan support, right? banning bump stocks has enjoyed bipartisan support up on capitol hill, but there are a few details here. "a," schumer is going to try to do it through unanimous consent. it's a fast track process, but the pit fall that comes with that it only takes one individual to oppose that and stop it in its tracks. that's expected to happen with the number of republicans who are against this effort. so that's the first thing. "b," a lot of republicans are criticizing schumer of going through this path of trying to force a vote on the bump stocks and not working on a bipartisan group to come to some sort of consensus. someone like tom tillis says he doesn't see this as a true attempt by schumer to make law because he's just bringing this bill to the floor immediately without having conversations in a room with a small group of bipartisan senators to try to come to some sort of consensus. at the end of the day, again, bump stocks banning them does enjoy bipartisan support, so one would thing this would get bipartisan support on the senate floor today especially in the wake of the supreme court decision, but republicans are apprehensive to hand president biden a decisive win in an election year, nonetheless so close to an election year especially as something on polarizing on guns where an achievement on gun legislation would be massive for the president. >> politics coming first there. and the supreme court decision was criticized in many quarters. lastly, just a quick second on your latest piece you're writing reporting about how donald trump is trying to navigate abortion and other reproductive rights issues, which has been an electoral loser for republicans since the dobbs decision. what's the latest. >> typically when you look at the relationship between donald trump and moderate republicans, those running in districts president biden won back in 2020, donald trump has been an issue for them, and moderates sometimes try to separate themselves from him bombastic style and his controversial positions. this time it seems like donald trump has learned his lessons from 2022, seeing how the issue of abortion galvanized democrats, and he's sort of giving these moderate republicans space to speak about the issue in a way that caters to their constituents. so he had that closed door meeting with house republicans last week, told them to talk about it, quote, correctly in a way that caters best to their constituents, backed exceptions for rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is in danger. so it's really fascinating to see how he's navigating this issue, and bottom line, jonathan, it shows republicans are recognizing this is so important after 2022. for republicans and democrats they've got to figure it out and we're so close to november. >> they've got to figure it out every step of the way. coming up here we're going to look ahead to one virginia primary today pitting former president trump against the chair of the house freedom caucus. plus, it was indeed a big night for boston with the celtics winning the 2024 nba championship. banner number 18 has arrived. oh, yes, we'll bring you all the highlights. those stories and a check on the forecast when we come right back. ght back here's to getting better with age. here's to beating these two every thursday. help fuel today with boost high protein, complete nutrition you need... ...without the stuff you don't. so, here's to now. boost. ah, these bills are crazy. she has no idea she's sitting on a goldmine. well she doesn't know that if she owns a life insurance policy of $100,000 or more she can sell all or part of it to coventry for cash. even a term policy. even a term policy?
