willing to cede the future of electric vehicles to china. he said if americans made electric vehicles it would drive down wage said and spell the end of american auto. well, like almost everything else he's said, he's wrong. you have proved him wrong. >> that's president joe biden stepping up his attacks on donald trump while meeting yesterday with united auto workers. we'll have more of biden's comments and his criticism of his predecessor straight ahead. meanwhile, donald trump is essentially confirming reports that he plans to get revenge on his critics if he wins a second term. we'll play for you that disturbing new interview. and plus, a major development out of the middle east. israel is agreeing to daily humanitarian pauses in gaza. we'll get insight on how that could work and the overall impact on the war with hamas. good morning, and welcome to "way too early" on this friday, november 10th. we made it to friday, everyone. i'm jonathan lemire. thanks for starting your day with us. with the 2024 presidential election now less than a year away, president joe biden shifted into much more of a campaign mode last night at a fund-raising event in chicago. the president touted his administration's successes and claimed credit for the democratic party's big wins in several state races earlier in the week. among them was kentucky where biden said last night that democratic governor andy beshear won re-election after, quote, running on programs that were all biden initiatives. notably, though, beshear worked to separate himself from the white house on the campaign trail likely due to biden's extreme unpopularity in his state. biden also called donald trump out by name last night, something he's often been previously reluctant to do. at the fund-raiser biden told donors in attendance that trump was, quote, the only reason that abortion was banned in america and is now running to end democracy as we know it. now, that fund-raiser came after the president spent hours earlier with members of the united auto workers elsewhere in illinois to celebrate the union's tentative deal with detroit's big three auto makers. the president congratulated the union while wearing a local chapter t-shirt as you can see there. and he slammed trump and republicans for not doing enough for auto workers. >> the entire uaw proved what i've always believed. wall street didn't build america, the middle class didn't build america, and unions built the middle class. let's think about this. when my predecessor, the distinguished -- anyway. >> we know. >> here's the difference, when you're in the middle of a fight, i stood and others stood with you shoulder to shoulder with you on that picket line. my predecessor went to a nonunion shop and attacked -- >> yes, he did. >> i hope you guys have a memory. where i come from it matters. the truth is if you had listened to him -- and thank god you didn't. >> the biden campaign also released a new ad slamming trump's record on manufacturing. the 30-second spot aired last night during thursday night football. >> he says he stands with auto workers, but as president donald trump passed tax breaks for his rich friends while auto makers shuttered their plants and the u.s. lost manufacturing jobs. joe biden said he'd stand up for workers, and he's delivering, passing laws that are increasing wage said and creating good paying jobs. manufacturing is coming back to america because joe biden doesn't just talk, he delivers. >> i reported earlier in the week the president's team is about to step up attacks on donald trump. you're seeing it. now back in september, of course, president biden joined auto workers in the detroit area on the picket line making history as the first sitting president ever to do so. as for trump in a sit down interview that aired on univision last night he seemed to confirm recent reporting from "the washington post" and other outlets about his plans to enact revenge on his critics if he wins back the white house. >> they've released the genie out of the box, you understand that. they've done something that nobody thought would happen. they've done indictments in order to win an election. they call it weaponization. and the people aren't going to stand for it, but, yeah, they have done something that allows the next party -- if i happen to be the next president and i see someone doing well and beating me very badly and i say go down and indict them, mostly what that would be -- you know, they'd be out of business. they'd be out. they'd be out of the election. >> in that same interview trump was asked about how he would handle the israel-hamas war if he were the president right now. here's what the gop front-runner had to say. >> how can the u.s. stop more innocent people civilians on both sides? >> you have a war going on and you're probably going to have to let this play out. there's no hatred like the palestinian hatred of israel and jewish people and probably the other way around also. i don't know. it's not as obvious but probably that's it. so sometimes you have to let things play out, and you have to see where it ends. >> joining us now national politics reporter for bloomberg. stephanie, good to see you this morning. donald trump has been incessantly attacking president joe biden, but now it seems like the biden campaign has begun to hit back. we reported earlier this week that they had thought that trump's gop primary rivals would take a lot of shots at trump. that never really happened. the biden team ramping up their own attacks now, and you've got some new reporting about the state of these two campaigns. tell us about it. >> you're 100% right. the biden campaign has been stepping up their attacks, and reporting from my colleagues and i this last week revealed president biden and outlets groups have outspent every single candidate in the election so far on advertisements and an unprecedented amount compared to incumbents running for election. he's spent 39 on advertisements and advisers are saying that this isn't a sign of worry among the biden camp, that in fact this is their way of getting ahead of the curve, of trying to target and figure out messages that resonate with voters over the general election. but republicans don't necessarily see it this way. they react to this as, you know, thinking that the biden campaign is scared, that they continue to lag in polling, and this might be their way to try to help bump up president biden's favorability. >> the campaign won't really get launched until january, but certainly right about upping their attacks. let's talk about what happened yesterday. it's been a pretty good week for the president, obviously. democrats did so well in the elections on tuesday, and now he got to take a bit of a victory lap yesterday in illinois including with the uaw president sean fain. so talk to us about how important it is for the president who has billed himself so pro-labor to try to win not just union endorsements and uaw hasn't give him theirs yet but we all expect it. and the actual union members in 2016 and 2020 a lot of them broke for trump, these white working class voters. what's the biden campaign's pitch to try to get them back? >> certainly. they've been touting bidennomics for a very long time that they're trying to build out the middle class. and in some ways this is a reaction to what we're seeing in polling that voters are reacting to domestic policies. and in fact bloomberg news and morning consul poll released yesterday voters really are thinking about issues more close to home. more viewers view the u.s. border with mexico and immigration rights issues are more up to of mind more so than the israel and hamas war. foreign policy is really top of mind, i think the biden campaign recognizes that many of the issues that will drive voters to the polls in 2024 will be domestic issues. >> national politics reporter for bloomberg, thank you for joining us. we'd love to have you back soon. we turn now to some other headlines, a big one here. democratic senator joe manchin of west virginia has announced he'll not run for re-election next year. the conservative democrats' decision is a blow to national democrats as control of the senate will be up for grabs next year although manchin faced a very tough re-election campaign and may not have won. manchin did not confirm any future electoral plans, but he most certainly did allude to a potential run for president. >> after months of deliberation and a long conversation with my family, i believe in my heart of hearts that i accomplished what i setout to do for west virginia. i've made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that i will not be running for re-election to the united states senate, but what i will be doing is traveling the country sw and speaking out to see if there's an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle and bring americans together. >> there's been a lot of speculation that manchin might end up making a no labels third-party run for president, certainly would be damaging to the democrats. as for the senate, most democrats think they've got a shot to hang onto it, but it would be 50-50 at best which means, of course, you'd have to win the white house and break a vote to have the senate. it would be very, very close. meanwhile as the november 17th government funding deadline looms, there's been a new setback for house speaker mike johnson this morning. in a further sign of dysfunction in the lower chamber, the republican led house finished the week by canceling votes on two party line funding bills. one was a fancial services measure, which was pulled due to divisions on abortion-related provisions and funding for the newly planned fbi headquarters. the other a transportation housing bill pulled over concerns from some of the gop about proposed cuts to amtrak. it's a step backward for speaker johnson because he hoped to show progress on appropriations bills championed by conservatives as a means of securing their votes for aonnuing resolution to prevent the government from shutting down. the ongoing chaos prompted one house republica to call the party ungovernable. congressman troy nails of texas told nbc news, i don't think the lord jesus himself could manage this group. he added he would pray for a new speaker over the long weekend as members departed washington yesterday ahead of the veterans day holiday being observed today. they're back on monday. we should note government funding expires one week from today, seven days away. still ahead here on "way too early," the civil fraud trial against the trump organization is moving into the next phase. we'll take a look at who is expected to take the witness stand for trump's legal team, plus how senate republicans derailed an investigation into alleged ethics lapses on the supreme court. those stories and a check on weather when we come right back. n weather when we come right back. hello. it is so fantastamazing for me to see other trolls. is this how people feel when they meet me? israel has expressed fears that hamas would use them to their advantage. what sort of impact could it also have on the overall war effort? >> yeah, both those are true, jonathan. just looking at it big picture how do you functionally make a 4-hour pause work? how would people, refugees know when those four hours are going to be, and then it's just a question what if some of these folks are wounded what if they need assistance getting to whatever that point is for evacuation? it's a pretty tough situation all around to execute that pause. at the same time i'm sure the israeli defenses are quite worried this provides an escape hatch for hamas. it has happened before where they have used some ort of medical or humanitarian asset that is in gaza for their own purposes of being surreptitious iniding their military operations. it is a tough challenge for israeli defense forces. also you have to ask from a logistical standpoint while they're trying to do military operations, this is the idea principally in north gaza how would they do this? how would they execute this humanitarian corridor? and think of it from the soldiers perspective it would be very tough for them to do both missions at the same time. you might remember back to a war in iraq when the u.s. military faced very similar problems after a couple of weeks where they were both doing military operations and trying to do humanitarian operations at the same time. it usually does not go very well. >> so we've reported about some of the frustration u.s. officials have with how israel has conducted this war. you can see it a little bit on the president's face just there. and he confirmed he asked netanyahu for a longer pause to help secure the release of the hostages. clint, give us a break down why israel is so reluctant to do that and also what you think, what happens next with these hostages who have been there for more than a month now, many of them very clearly in a war zone. >> every time militarily they trade time, they are giving an advantage to hamas is the way that they see it. meaning those underground complexes every time they know there's a 4-hour pause or a longer pause, let's say a multi-day pause, this allows hamas to consolidate and reorganize its forces so they continue to fight. also, though, this time factor is critically important because the longer the war goes on, the more civilian casualties there will be. it is quite likely this will only get worse, and then israel starts to lose broader support for the attack that was done on them and their continuing operations in north gaza. so all of these tradeoffs are impacting them, and it's really two counter veiling forces. hurry-up to finish off hamas and at the same time don't go too fast because you don't want to create civilian casualties. the israeli defense forceerize in a tough position, but they need to narrow down probably on what their objectives are, and i think that's one of the questions is they did move in quickly about two weeks after the attack, and now what are the objectives because they haven't really defined what their exit plan or sustainment plan would be in north gaza. >> all right, former fbi special agent clint watts, thank you. i'm certain we'll speak to you again soon. still ahead here on "way too early," we'll go live to cnbc for an early look at what's driving the day on wall street. plus, some sweet news for doughnut lovers. what krispe creme and mcdonald's just announced about expanding their partnership. we'll be right back with that. ng their partnership. we'll be right back with that. i got this $1,000 camera for only $41 on dealdash. dealdash.com, online auctions since 2009. this playstation 5 sold for only 50 cents. this ipad pro sold for less than $34. and this nintendo switch, sold for less than $20. i got this kitchenaid stand mixer for only $56. i got this bbq smoker for 26 bucks. and shipping is always free. go to dealdash.com right now and see how much you can save. you guys see this starting next month disney plus and hulu are going to be merged into the same app. streamers are merging. pretty soon they're going to be in one giant app called cable. what are we doing? >> thank you. and i think the biggest thing that's happened for my fellow veterans was president biden signing the pact act last year. when you talk to vietnam veterans they had to fight for decades to get the benefits they earned from exposure to things. because of the leadership here and what happened in congress my fellow veterans exposed to burn pits in places like iraq and afghanistan, we aren't going to have those decades long fights. i think it's part of this country standing for what it believes in and its obligation to those who wore the uniform. that's the biggest positive accomplishment. the things that i see hurting veterans, you know, i saw proposed cuts come out of my republican colleagues earlier this year that would have hurt veterans in v.a. funding, and i often think about, you know, we see and hear thank you for your service, and often it's not backed up enough by action, by making sure we have a fully funded and staffed v.a., the mental health care is there for my fellow veterans and more. i always want to encourage folks express that gratitude but then push and make sure your legislators and elected officials are there standing up and fighting for veterans and the care that we need. >> few things more important. thank you for delivering that message, congressman. we mentioned earlier in the show the ongoing dysfunction in the house of representatives with the cancellation of these party line votes on funding bills ahead of the possible looming government shutdown just one week away. give us your assessment and reaction to what's going on the republican side and how worried are you that a deal, even a continuing resolution won't be reached by next friday. >> no, you're right. as you say the republican leadership has now pulled several of these spending bills. and let's go back a few months. we have under the law now an agreement for a budget. this was the debt ceiling deal as then speaker mccarthy and then president biden worked out. it wasn't a perfect deal. it was a compromise. i voted for it. i've urged my republican colleagues to just honor the law, honor that deal and let's not have spending bills that are filled with these poison pill culture war attacks, and let's just honor the deal. since they aren't doing that clearly and they don't even have the votes on their own side right now to pass those bills, they should move a clean continuing resolution. let's keep the government funded and open and not do some crazy partisan right-wing thing. i haven't nor has anyone seen what speaker johnson is going to offer for a continuing resolution. so i don't even know what their proposal is, and keep in mind we have one week left to get this done before the government might shutdown and might hurt a lot of people in this country if that happens. >> yeah, there's been seemingly some momentum for a continuing resolution. that now seems a little bit in doubt. congressman, lastly, we of course mentioned you are a veteran of the iraq war. give us your analysis, if you will, where things stand in the israel-hamas war. you're moving into urban warfare there in gaza. what are the risks there for israel, and what are your fears about the possibility of the war expanding beyond hamas? >> well, i hope that it doesn't, and certainly israel needs to defeat hamas, which has brought suffering to see many in palestine and israel. and so i think if you talk to anyone who served in the wars of our generation of veterans whether in iraq especially against the enemy, in this case, hamas that is willing to put civilians, innocent people at risk to embed themselves in innocent population. it requires discretion. i know the biden administration, secretary blinken in particular, has urging that kind of discretion on the part of our israeli friends as they take the fight to hamas and defeat them as they must. so i've continued to encourage that, and i have been glad to see several of my colleagues who have experienced in wars like iraq, sharing their voice here and reminding folks that these fights aren't easy and you can really see a lot of suffering among civilians with an adversary like hamas. >> democratic congressman, chris deluzio of pennsylvania. thank you for being a guest ander for your service. >> thank you. coming up next on "way to early," vivek ramaswamy was said to have been created in a right-wing edge lord factory. matt lewis is here to explain what he meant, and break down why republicans who share the candidate's style are now on the rise. then coming up on "morning joe," president joe biden is building momentum for his re-election campaign, trading his suit jacket for a united autoworkers t-shirt as he celebrated the union's victory and bashed donald trump's record. plus, democratic congressman jim clyburn of south carolina and seth moulton of massachusetts will join the conversation. also ahead, the actor jason sudaikis will join the show. n sudaikis will join the show. ica, including mental alertness from one serving. to help keep me sharp. try new neuriva ultra. think bigger. oh, hello! hi! do you know that every load of laundry could be worth as much as $300? is it about time? is it going to be effective? >> i think this is the only way to win. this election will be about donald trump. trump will drive turnout and whether that means 2ru6r7 wins because of republicans or whether it means biden wins because trump drove turnout of democrats, it's about trump. might as well embrace it if you are joe biden, and this is going to have to be, i think, a very negative, nasty race inherently. if you are joe biden, it's better to accept that at this point i think than to figure it out, you know, when it's even closer to election day. >> yeah. the theory is the more we're talking about donald trump, the better it is for joe biden. senior columnist for "the daily beast," matt lewis, thank you so much. have a great weekend, and thanks to all of for getting up "way too early" on this friday morning.
