Were just hours away from the massive category four Storm Making Landfall in the window for people to evacuate is closed closing fast, one official in tampa saying, quote, ive never seen anything of this magnitude we have Team Coverage with cnns randi kayes standing by in sarasota. But first lets go to Meteorologist Derek Van dam. What do we know . Right . Derek. Alright, panel, were getting that 11 00 a. M. National Hurricane Center update passing you the latest information at this critical juncture, this critical moment in time still a category four storm, although there has been some observed weakening, i do want to stress that this storm and the Storm Surge Potential will come on shore very consistent with a category five hurricane, even though the winds may not say so because of the amount of energy that this has pushed up from the eastern gulf of mexico. Nonetheless, an Impactful Storm is bearing down on florida and were already feeling the outer effects of The Rain Bands from Hurricane Milton. This is also new with the 11 00 a. M. Update, a category three, but there is explicit language within the national Hurricane Centers discussion that we are just getting now that this will be teetering on a category three category four, strength as it makes landfall still overnight tonight. So that is going to complicate the scenario here as this will be, of course, during the dark of night, making it that much more difficult for anybody who decided to actually ride out the storm to deal with surge and the wind impacts Tornado Threat as well. This is ongoing. You saw the image that pam flashed on the screen a moment ago of these tornadoes that have been popping up across Southern Florida, some of which have been rather large and they have been confirmed not only visually, but on radar as well. There it is on your screen. That is an impressive tornado in the language from the Forecast Discussion that national Hurricane Center, theyre saying tornadic Super Cells have been swarmed over Southern Florida and will continue to do so. And you can see several warnings ongoing with a Tornado Watch valid through 9 00 p. M. Tonight anywhere from Tampa Bay southward all the way to miami dade county. Now, one fact that we want to hammer home here is that there will be a lot of rain that will fall from the sky. So not only do we have this very rare high risk thats only issued 4 of the time, but 40 of fatalities at 80 of damages comes out of that area. We got to learn what happened with helene two weeks ago and north carolina. But this is going to win pork against the Storm Surge that will be pushed in from the ocean. So the water has nowhere to go, but up this is the current Wind Gusts that are actually taking place across the west western coastline of florida and they are edging closer and closer to that tropical stormforce. And the reason i bring that up is because there are so many bridges that line the Barrier Islands here and those will be shut down once this becomes sustained, tropicalstormforce. So the window is narrowing for anyone who decided to actually ride out the storm that they want to leave now, because the worst of the storm is going to start to really settle in and catastrophic wind with a category four Hurricane Bearing down on sunday for florida, as we speak, pam all right. Tell us the alitas, they are Randi Shore Of Sarasota and were at a Neighbors Home who has evacuated, but he gave us the right to use his backyard here. Hes not sure if his boat is going to still be here when he returns. That is because of the Storm Surge we spoke to the mayor here, liz alpert, and she said her biggest Hes Concern here and sarasota is that Storm Surge likely going to be ten to 15 feet as you were hearing derek has been talking about that all morning. Of course, a Hurricane Helene was a Storm Surge of about seven feet. So that is very concerning for residents here all morning, pam, weve been seeing sort of the different bands coming through. Weve had some heavy Rain Weve had some thunder, some lightning. Wind is certainly concern, even just a few hours from now, were expecting to see 40, 50 mile an hour winds so that is why theres concerned about that here behind me and other votes along this waterway. And you can see there out in the homes, the homes there in the distance. Those homes are all boarded up either with Hurricane Shutters are with plywood, just its like all of the businesses in town, the restaurants have closed. This is really pretty much a Ghost Town here in sarasota. Thats because people are very concerned given what they saw happen with Hurricane Helene. Theres debris everywhere there everywhere around these neighborhoods that weve been driving through people told me that they spent 15 hours a day just pulling out room queens from their home, the remnants of what happened after Hurricane Helene so much of the homes were destroyed so we did speak to one woman who said that they are planning to ride out Hurricane Milton, even though they said that Hurricane Helene had destroyed the home that theyve been living in on Siesta Key for 25 years heres what she told me about that now, as this hurricane is barreling down directly on our community, it feels like maybe helene was just a rehearsal for whats to come there talking possible 15 foot Storm Surge. None of us in 100 years have seen anything like this. It is shocking now they lost all of their belongings and their home, all their clothes, all their furniture, everything. Pam, they are planning to ride it out. Hurricane milton on the ninth floor of a Condo Building in Downtown Sarasota that building is built to withstand Hurricane Jane Category 5s. So they are hoping they will be safe, but they did tell me that they have actually counted the number of steps it will take to get to the to the stairwell just in case because they do expect the elevators will go out and in case of an emergency and i did speak to the mayor, as i said here, and she said that even for people who stay, they should have one weeks worth of water, one and weeksworth of food because they just dont know how long it will take. What do you say to these residents who decide to make moves like that as the storm is about to bear down On Sarasota in the area where you are right . Now consider going to one of the shelters or instituting your plan to get to wherever it is that you were planning to go to ten to 15 foot Storm Surge . Its not just about getting high, its about whether or not rescuers can get to you if you need them and with this type of Storm Surge, sometimes that is just not possible, especially with the wind there will come a point where were not going to be able to run rescue vehicles. And so that becomes incredibly dangerous for anyone to try to say this morning, nearly one in four Gas Stations in florida are out of fuel, more than half of Tampa Gas stations are empty according to Gas Buddy how dire is the situation with the Gas Shortages in your area . So we are providing transportation to our shelters, state of florida has also made an arrangement with uber to provide transportation. So if somebody doesnt feel like they have enough gas that they can get to a shelter. There are there are mechanisms in place for us and Manatee County if they dial 311 that will connect them to one of our operators, they can tell us what where they are, we can tell them where Pickup Point is. And if their Special Needs than we can arrange for transportation to our Special Needs shelter. I think thats really important. And it actually brings me to my next question. The people who might not just be able to hop in a car and flee. I want to ask you about the homeless living in the tampa st. Petersburg metropolitan area. The national alliance its to end homelessness, says there are nearly 16,000 people living on the streets and in shelters. One of the highest rates in the country have there been special efforts to care for these people who so often slipped through the cracks yes, maam. Have a very active Community Paramedics program. They do a lot of outreach during regular Blue Skies with the homeless community. And they have been working nonstop over the last few days to make make contact with those folks. Let them know whats happening, let them know where the shelters are, and our Manatee County Public Transportation has arranged Pickup Points for all of those folks. So we are weve done everything we can do to prepare and were just waiting now so what does that mean for you . We know that but there was issues with people getting gas and that kind of thing that makes it more difficult to flee now for us, its probably too one of the shelters that we have set up here locally or two friends, or we have 130,000 Hotel Rooms here in central florida. So theres still Hotel Capacity and its more people are evacuating to orlando. Were going to get hit by category four hurricane. And yet the people from the coast for evacuating over here because theyre going to be hit a three or four category three or category four hurricane. So we still have Hotel Rooms that are available here. So you can still evacuated to orlando or from orlando if you choose to do that. But i would say by midafternoon were gonna get start getting bands that are going to make it extremely dangerous to travel so youre about at the end of that window you talked about how youve faced other hurricanes in the past with this hurricane, what is your biggest concern . I think the flooding that were going to experience we experienced a tremendous amount of flooding during ian and some of these areas that were impacted, then will probably be impacted again. Obviously, were inland, so we dont have Storm Surge, but we do have localized flooding the thing during ian, which has couple of years ago with didnt have Hurricane Force winds. So we didnt have a lot of trees down. Weve unfortunately had a little bit of practice with Hurricane Helene and just had all our equipment staged, our personnel called up ready to respond to any emergencies. So as far first Fire Rescue is concerned, and Hillsborough County in general we are prepared. We have all our equipment or personnel staged and now its just a Waiting Game minutes ago, we just learned that some 10,000 people are sheltering in Hillsborough County. Is the Window Closing for people to safely evacuate ahead of the storm . Absolutely. The recommendation was given that they should be in a safe Place And Shelter at 8 00 a. M. Today however, there is still a window for you to find where youre going to ride this storm out we have Evacuation Zones that are going to be severely impacted and. Be for locally and we are letting everyone know it is time to get out there. We will not be able to respond once Hurricane Winds are sustained at 40 miles an hour so you will ride this storm out on your own until it is safe for us to respond. So theres still time for you to find where youre going to ride this we have 12 shelters available for those that have nowhere to go. Five of which are pet friendly. We have three Special Needs shelters. So we are doing our very best to provide our citizens and option i think thats a really important point that at some point in this storm, your crews are going to be able to respond to folks who stayed behind and are in danger and i think that thats really important for those to know, right . That that you may not have the help you need if you stay behind, what is your message to them . Those people who think, look, im just going to stay here and ride out this storm on my own weve tried to provide our community enough information so they can make an informed decision. And were being upfront very honest with them. I think in america and generally speak when you are need, you call Someone And Somebody will show up to your aid during a hurricane. Its a little different. With sustained winds hit each area has to make a decision when it is deemed unsafe for their personnel to respond. Here in florida where at 40 miles an hour sustained and we just advise the citizens of this county. If you are going to hunker down in an area that were telling you to evacuate. We wont becoming if the winds are sustained at that at that speed its an important message, alvarez. Thank you dont even isi also joins us now vinnytsia, he is the senior director of Public Safety at Tampa General Hospital have you evacuated any patients to other hospitals and how much does the actual patient have in that decisionmaking we have evacuated anybody yet and we dont plan to, you know, we feel like we have have some great Mitigation Plans in place and were going to provide the same level of care that we do every day for our patients here tell us a little bit more about what youre doing to protect those patients. You say youre not land on vacua than anyone. I know that the hospital has set up that this Aquafence Right . This waterproof barrier that can withstand Storm Surge up to 15 feet above Sea Level and its not the first time its being tested or is it . Its not well, we weve had the fence since 2019. Its really a Deployable Waterproof fence, like you said, and it does give us that ability to sustain surge up to 15 feet. And weve deployed it every year since we purchase it in 2019. So in the last hurricane did exactly what it was designed to do, what kept the water on the other side of the fence and it was literally bone dry on the hospital side. Did you have any doctors, nurses, or other Staff Members who are reluctant to stay back and they want to evaluate its i mean, evacuated, its got to be such a difficult predicament to first responders with their own families their own homes to consider yeah. Its interesting. We had the resiliency of this team is really incredible and it always, you know, i think its pretty cool that these teams are coming in. Weve activated a hurricane teams and theyre coming in knowing that theyre leaving their families, their homes behind. But they also understand there call of duty to take care of our patients. And thats super cool, right . And so we havent had anybody who said, i cant do this. We do give them that option, but weve got full staffing here. Were ready hi, to provide that no worldclass clare, that our community deserves and needs and will do that today and into the future i think about the women who are pregnant right . And may go into labor during the hurricane, i think about babies in the nicu are you able to give them the care they need once milton hits oh, yes, for sure. So i think we opened our news central Energy Plant two years ago. And really what that did for us, we were able to elevate our fuel, our boilers are generators, 35 feet, and the air we have our local Power Feed runs out of the channel by about 80 feet. So its protected the patients. We dont expect them to see any different here during the storm are after the storm than they want to any normal day that level of care will remain the same thats really incredible. A lot of meteorologists have begun appearing, Just Wonder Katrina and obviously the hospitals were a devastating piece of that disaster what lessons were learned that you were hoping to apply to this Storm Response to be able to give those patients the exact same care no matter if theres a hurricane or not yeah, i think its super important one around that is the training that we do with our team and we also katrina their hospitals have generators, run the basement. Obviously that that wasnt great but weve learned from that all these Mitigation Efforts that we do whether its we have a warehouse in Central Tampa that we bring basically 300 pounds of supplies over here because we understand during the storm and maybe a few days postwar and were gonna be on our own, but weve got fuel, water, food, medical supplies, medical Gas Everything that we need to continue to operate like any other day here all right. Tell us more christine about why you are deciding to stay currently, im in a Nonevacuation Zone we were forced to leave the Hotel Yesterday was one of the last few to stay and pack It Up, close It Up, lock the doors, and leave because of the safety issues and concerns that milton was bringing we decided to make sure that all of our employees were safe and can find their way home and or find a location that they could evacuate to. So maybe one of the first to return it you need to be one of the first to return. Tell us about that as the General Manager the property of the hotel in the restaurant, im one of the first ones back to unlock the building and get the crew back on hand so that we can get the hotel cleaned up and the restaurant cleaned up and ready to accept guest as soon as its deemed safe. So where are you are right now . Do you feel like youre going to be safe in this monstrous storm thats going to be hitting overnight according to meteorologists i certainly dont. So i think what each hurricane we learn more and more with each one, this one kind of scares me a little bit. I mean, i could see the damage that helene provided and she was offshore. Whereas this one is supposed to hit us on a more direct path. So its a little alarming i mean, absolutely. So why i mean, i know you have to give back to the restaurant quickly as you pointed out to get it back up and running again. But are you having second thoughts about staying close by . I mean, is there a part of you that is like, you know what, maybe i should go further away. So that i can safely say that i will be safe from this storm know, i feel comfortable in our home. We have a very good, solid home built in a Nonevacuation Zone several, free several i want to say 75 feet above Sea Level but i feel very, very comfortable here. We made the decision as a family to stay home and honestly, as latest, it wasnt i left yesterday. There was no Hotel Rooms to try to go to and safetywise to get On The Roads, wouldnt have been feasible at that point . Im at. You manage 100 employees. What do you know about their plans . Have many of them evacuated their homes. Again, most of them live in non Evacuation Zones as well. There are we do have a few who did lose their homes during helene and they have left the area. They went one i know isnt atlanta to be with you . Family. And the other one is staying with friends and a safer location how do you expect this hurricane to impact your job and the jobs of workers that you you could see the hotel after the damage that helene did it was it was very frightening. However, the team pulled together in the last ten days in really cleaned that property up, that restaurant up, its Night And Day from where it was after helene passed so i have a staff that is definitely dedicated to getting the hotel back and rebuilt as well as an Ownership Group that is standing firm behind us and ensuring that as soon as its deemed safe and we can get the workers back and cleaned up and accrue on site just start some of the repairs that are needed we want to try to get the restaurant and the hotel opened as quickly as possible to get all of our employees back to work as quickly as possible. All has to be so are they just cleaned everything up and now, milton could undo all of that hard work. You were born and raised in florida. What does it feel like to be living through these two . Store storms that are backtoback essentially its absolutely mindboggling. I have never in all of my years of living here, which is my whole entire life, born and raised right here in clearwater have seen anything like this in the destruction. Honestly . Last three years, weve been forced to evacuate at least once for hurricane and you we always come back to the property and its picking up a few pieces of treelines, hearing theyre clearing the Sand Out or picking up some papers back behind the Pool Deck . Helene was a completely separate mass. It was walking over two feet of Sand And Shell and the restaurant and bricks in the pool and never seen devastation like this. And then you know, on saturday when we started seeing the path of milton, my first comment was, it has to be a sick joke. This cant be happening to us. Again yeah thats been unbelievably difficult i just im thinking about you and your family, Christine Vodka and all your employees. And we just hope everyone stays safe thank you so much. Thank you. And i started hearing from some of my sources about some pretty egregious its allegations that hadnt yet been made public. One particularly troubling story Involved A Young Female employee who has alleged that a more Senior Officer came to her home with a gun demanding sexual relations. That person has since been fired from the cia, according to my sources, but i got to wondering what the scope of the problem that the agency had was did they . Have essentially the same problem that broader society has that other sort of large traditional organizations had, or did they have a uniquely high incidents of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment . And i came to find out that the agency had recently done an internal survey. Now important to note, only 25 of the Agencys Workforce responded to this. And theres some limitations to this. Its better to think of it as sort of a snapshot than the final word. But it found that 7 of respondents reported experiencing some kind of unwanted Sexual Contact or assaults during the course of their entire career at the agency. And 1 reported that that had happened to them in the last year alone, pam what complicated this and reading through your reporting was sort of a mixed signals. They were getting in terms of going to the police because they had so much pressure to keep their cover, right . Yeah. Theres this really unique logistical challenge that the cia has, which is that in many instances, not only the accused, but also the the alleged victim, or quite often undercover meeting that theyre very identities or classified as well as often the location that the alleged assault has happened, that creates this big challenge, right . For cia officers who want to report a crime and victims have some victims have said that the agency has in the past discouraged them from reporting assault to Law Enforcement. Now, the ceo his undertaking, this kind of big reform efforts. And one of the us over the past year really, and one of the big things that theyve done is put in place a federal Law Enforcement officer whose job it is to try to facilitate some of those interactions.
