protesters. at least 46 people were killed. you're about to see ads urging people to quit smoking. it's the first time that the cdc has ran a paid anti-tobacco effort. they say they need to spend the money to go up against the multimillion dollar campaigns that get people to smoke. here's one of the ads. we warn you, it is quite graphic. >> i'm mary and i want to give you some information how i get ready in the morning. former illinois governor, rod blagojevich, has one more hour before he hags to report to federal prison in chicago. he's serving a 14-year sentence for corruption including trying to sell the senate seat once held by president obama. here he is shaking people's hands at the airport in chicago. last hour i spoke to a former official about what to expect when he goes to prison. >> when you go to prison, you're not rod blagojevich anymore. when i went, i wasn't jim laski. rod blagojevich will get this in the next few hours. he will get strip searched and they will send his clothes back home and he will get his uniform. >> we're looking at live pictures. i want to bring you up to speed here. these are live pictures of him getting out of the vehicle. several foeting to graphers have been following him. they are talking to him before he ends up entering that prison facility and serving out his term there. there he is walking it looks like he may be talking to somebody on the phone there. this is the final hour before he goes into that prison facility. and memphis finally ready to give martin luther king jr. his own street. this is 44 years after he was shot on the hotel balcony. a mile-long stretch of linden avenue will be renamed dr. mlk avenue on the 44th anniversary of his murder. about to show you very disturbing images out of syria. it may be the most graphic video that we have seen out of the city of homs. this is where syrian troops have absolutely pounded protesters. we are talking about tank fire as well as artillery. this report is from arwa damon and shows about a dozen family members in one house apparently killed in cold blood. we have to warn you, this is very graphic. >> reporter: the men crotch as they move across rooftops. it's taken them nearly a week to get through the fault line that runs through homs. we're rescuing the family that has been killed what they find, shocking beyond description. the first body, that of a woman and the room next to it, bodies backed into a corner as if they were trying to hide. they face a mask of fear. blood splatters the walls let the world see, the voice claims and look at the massacre in just one house. the video is said to have been shot in the city of habib. >> reporter: look, look, he says, overcome with emotion as he, too, curses the regime and the world. the camera shows those slaughtered. suddenly, on another floor, a tiny woman per the child crawls out clearly terrified. he must have been hiding for days. don't be afraid, you're safe now. don't make a sound, one of the men tells the boy. it's not known who killed his family or why. but the man who found the bodies are sure this was a sectarian massacre carried out by thugs allied to the regime. >> wow. such a powerful piece. very disturbing. arwa damon is live from beirut. arwa, first of all, how did you come upon this to find this video, this family, this story? >> reporter: actually, it was two syrian activists who are part of a media network. they have a team that operates in homs and in damascus and they were the ones that got their hands on the video and then and came and approached the video and you're seeing images where you hear the little boy's woman per. it was a story, without a doubt, that had to be told. >> one of the things thaw brought up in your report, you say that this wasn't motivated, right, by people who are political or people who are part of this fight. this is just a family just killed. >> reporter: well, the activists are saying that they and those involved in the so-called rescue mission believe that this is an act of sectarian nature. the family that was killed was sunni. and in the city of homs, we are seeing this emerge. this is not the first such massacre. the reason why that team of men had to go in across rooftops and blasting through walls, this really elaborate process was because they could not go to the house's front door and that's because the house looks on to the white neighborhood and activists have been warning that these types of sectarian killings on bolt sides are going to increase the longer this drags on. they quite simply are not going to be able to contain the cycle of hatred and the desire to carry out acts of revenge where one loses a loved one. >> arwa, can you tell us a little bit more about the boy in that story? i mean, how it was that he was able to survive when the rest of the family had been killed. >> reporter: we believe he's around 7 or 8 years old and it seems like he must have spent quite a few days in that room and you'll notice that in the video there you have to crawl over a dead body to get out. the men, when they are initially realized that there is a child who is alive, try to coax him out saying, come, come, don't be afraid and he says, where, where? and they say, come, come, we're going to protect you. we're going to take you to see your father. of course, the tragic thing in all of this, we believe his father and his entire family is dead. he then stayed a fairly silent. the men were trying to make sure that he didn't speak out in fear, too, because, again, even though they managed to pull him to relative safety, it's still fairly risky because they are surrounded by government supporters and by government forces and it's complete shock and silence. >> arwa, thank you. this is just one story that illustrates what is taking place in syria now and some people believe they are on the brink of civil war. as a condition before becoming a state, campaigning in puerto rico on sunday, jim acosta joins uses via broad band from san juan. good to see you there. is he defending them? what is he saying? >> that's right. he is standing by those comments, suzanne. we had a chance to catch up with rick santorum. he's campaigning in puerto rico. why? because every delegate counts and the puerto rico voters are having a primary. and this all started yesterday when he told a newspaper that puerto rico must adopt english as a condition for statehood. that's a big issue down here. he hasn't backed away from those comments. and when we talk about the position, he's standing by his remarks. here's what he had to say. >> is that what you're -- >> what i said is english has to be learned as a language and it has to be a country where it's widely spoken and used. yes. >>. >> i think english and smish is going to be spoken near the island. it needs to be a buy lynn kwa bilingual country and english has to be spoken here also and spoken universally. it's already the language of the federal government here on the island. that's the language. >> i think that will be -- i think that will be a condition. i think it's important and if you talk to most parents, they want their children to learn english. it's essential for children in america to be able to speak english to fully integrate and have full opportunities. i don't think we're doing any more than people who come to america on the mainland. we're not doing them any favors by teaching them english. they need to be taught english. that's how you fully integrate into american life. it's the best opportunity to be successful. one of the most important things about puerto rico is to be a bridge that requires that you be able to speak both languages. >> and there you hear rick santorum saying that he is standing by those remarks. now, these comments may have cost him in this race for the puerto rican primary. i will tell thaw the puerto rican newspaper is reporting that one of santorum's delegates has withdrawn his support in light of these comments. why is all of this important? >> i'm not surprised. when you go back to that first slide. one out of three have less than $100,000 in savings and half have $25,000 in savings. the fact is, if you're one of those americans, you should be worried about not having enough retirement. it's a real problem. i've been doing cnn since 1977. these statistics are done every year. they have barely changed on the negative side. what has changed on the positive side is this. 81% of americans today who have a retirement account are now signed up and are using it. they may not be putting enough money away but they are using it and 10% of americans surveyed had over a quarter of a million dollars in savings. so we are seeing wealth in america in retirement accounts for the wealthier they are building. >> so, david, how much do you need to retire comfortably? >> i'll give you a simple formula. whatever you earn an hour, you need to be saving at least one hour a day of your income. so if you make $10 a day, at least $10 a day should be going directly into a retirement account, a 401(k) plan. the biggest challenge we have in america is that the average american is saving less than 30 minutes a day of their income. what do you earn an hour? if you earn $50 an hour, it's a minimum of $50 a day you should be saving. that's where people should start. if you look at percentagewise, a minimum of 10% of your income. >> less than $25,000 in savings and investment, 30% have less than $1,000. this a huge am of people. one in three people have virtually nothing saved up. so what do you have to do to make sure you're not completely broke when you get to that point? >> well, first of all, you want to model people in america who become self-made millionaires. when you look at the top 1%, they have done three simple things. one, they have paid themselves first the moment they get a paycheck. so, again, they use that retirement account. they are putting it into a 401(k) plan. they never stop paying themselves first. they are saving that money automatically. they are not writing checks, not using a budget, and they watch where that money goes. i call it the latte factor on the little things so they can figure out, i have enough money to pay myself. the same young people are carrying a $300 iphone and have $600 ipad and less than $100,000 in savings. we have to reprioritize. >> david, thank you. appreciate it. >> you're welcome. production is stopping on the hbo series "luck" after three horses died. dustin hoffman stars in the series. but you said it was greek. mmhmm. so is it greek or is it yoplait? >> you know, suzanne, the most recent horse death came as they were starting to film the second season. the horse was injured while walking back to its stable and put down tuesday after vets determined, well, the horse would not recover from its injuries. as for the two previous horse stats, not a lot of information available on that and other than the fact that the horses were under medication for pain at the time of their deaths, "luck's" producers issued a statement, with heartbreak they are ceasing all production adding, while we maintain that the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happened and it's impossible to guarantee they won't in the future. accordingly, we've reached this difficult decision. suzanne? >> there's some pretty big-named people. dustin hoffman, nick nolte. did they say anything about this? did they explain it or talk about their condolences in any way? >> well, this is obviously a huge blow for the entire cast. it was building its whole fan base. hbo finished production of the first season which is airing now on the network. the season one finale is scheduled to air on march 25th. they began on the second season but given the tragic accidents, they will cease the filming. animals are as important as actors and it's really safety first and we should add that hbo is owned by time-warner which is also under the umbrella of cnn. suzanne? >> kareen, all of these western scenes, we've seen "war horse," sea biscuit," why do they say it's so bad for the show? >> they followed strict safety standards. a vet tasked with monitoring the horses on "luck" say these types of injuries are very common. however, animal rights activists say "luck" producers weren't doing enough for safety and earlier this week asked the l.a. county d.a. and human society to investigate. regardless, everyone concerned acknowledges that canceling the production of this really great show is the most responsible move to really guarantee that no more animals are hurt. suzanne? [ male announcer ] engine light on? come to meineke now for a free code scan read and you'll say...my money. my choice. my meineke. >> the want to remind you, we are waiting for a verdict. these are live pictures inside the courtroom in the atlanta area. we've been talking for about this dunwoody daycare trial. this man accused of killing another man, a father just outside of his son's daycare broad daylight in the atlanta area. this case is by dar and involves an alleged love triangle. the widow was kicked out of the courtroom a couple weeks back. we're going to keep a close eye on this picture. live pictures thanks to wxia. as soon as we have a verdict, we'll bring that to you live. i do want to move to a story we have been covering out of florida. a neighborhood watch captain trying to prevent a crime is now being accused, by some, of keeng being a killer. but florida prosecutors have yet to decide if george zimmerman's action were criminal. he says it was self-defense when he shot and killed this young man, 17-year-old trayvon martin. there are now new details of the the accident from two witness who's spoke with david mattingly. first we're going to take a look at the shooting scene. >> trayvon martin walked out of this convenience store buying a bottle of iced tea and candy, goodies in preparation for watching the nba all-star game. he would have easily made it back to the condo where he was visiting in time for tipoff. it's possible that trayvon entered the neighborhood here, cutting between these twos buildings off the main road there on his way home. it should have been about a ten-minute walk, and even though it was a little after dark, his family probably wasn't concerned at all. this was generally regarded as a safe neighborhood. a safe place to be after dark. one of the reasons for that safety was 28-year-old george zimmerman, a volunteer neighborhood watch captain. but a recent break-in had people worried. >> someone broke into this one right here in the daytime. >> yes, they just walked in. >> frank taffy believes zimmerman kept him from becoming a victim just a month ago, alerting police to a suspicious person outside his condo. >> what was your perception of him? >> george seemed to be a very congenial, amiable person and we admired him for taking over the job as a neighborhood watch captain. >> he says residents didn't know zimmer pan was armed or about a scuffle with police seven years ago that got him arrested. the case was later dropped. zimmerman drew a hard line for people parking in the wrong place and playing loud music. yet, on this sunday night in february, zimmerman had his eye on trayvon martin, a lone black 17-year-old walking in the dark. zimmerman alerted police to a suspicious person. >> it's probably about right here where zimmerman made that call to police. you can see we're not very far from the entry gates into this neighborhood. at the time, it was a little after dark and it was raining. so trayvon very likely had his hood up over his head and his family says it's very likely he was listening to music on his iphone, not aware of what was going on around him. >> dispatchers is told zimmerman police were on the way, to get get out of his vehicle. but that's not what happened. >> is he got out of his car. there was some confrontation with trayvon. >> the family attorney says it's clear the young man was walking away from zimmerman down this sidewalk, around a corner. police won't say how the encounter turned violent. >> there's only one person alive who knows what's happened. that's zimmerman. >> run resident said she saw fighting, heard shouting and screams for help. then a gunshot. trayvon martin was shot in the chest, pronounced dead at the scene less than 100 yards from making it home. >> we want to welcome david mattingly back from florida. that's the first time we've seen pictures inside this community where the shooting happened. i know you spoking with two different witness who's were on the scene minutes after the shooting happened. what did they say? >> they were on the scene almost immediately. this happened outside their backdoor. they had the backdoor open. they said they couldn't hear the altercation but did hear something unusual. let's listen to that. >> we heard the kid crying, kind of looked at each other and that's when we heard the gunshot immediately. once the gun went off, the crying stopped. >> i just asked this guy three times, what's going on? what happened in there? and he was looking at me and go back to his position. and when we repeat it again, like what's wrong? what's going on? and he just look the an me again, he said just call the police. >> he being zimmerman? >> right, they walked outside immediately. they saw zimmerman leaning over the body and he told them to call police. >> we know the case is now at the state attorney. and it's zimmerman, correct, who is saying it was simply self-defense. >> right. >> why is it taking it so long it seems tols determine if that was the case? >> this gets very complicated. you don't have anybody watching at that precise moment when the gun was fired. only zimmerman knows what he was going through. the way the law is, the standard law in florida, if he believed his life was in danger, yes, it was self-defense. at this point police are having to not only get the information about the alleged altercation and then the shooting that took place afterwards, they're trying to gather evidence to see was he really in danger? rusty schneiderman's family perhaps? >> you see several -- many people in the courtroom. i can imagine these are many of the friends, many friends of the s cnn eidermans. the question at the time of the shooting was who would do this? this was a man described as having really no enemies. so that was a big question at the time. a volunteer in the community, people described him as a genius really, a great person. people questioned who would be behind this murder. >> we're looking at pictures of the family, rusty schneiderman, his wife andrea. we know she was kicked out of the courtroom not too long ago. we saw the pictures of her sort of getting up, hugging a witness and so ever since the judge gave her the boot. >> and that is the case. she's not been in the court since. and just recently learned that she hired attorneys for herself, not sure why at this point. she's not charged with anything but she has been implicated as somehow being part of a cover-up with neumann. >> gorge, stand by. as soon as we get a verdict, we'll chat once again. george, thank you so much. win their hearts and minds. remember that? america's strategy in afghanistan. as of today, sure sounds like that strategy has failed. you'll hear what hamid karzai is now demanding u.s. troops do. plus, why don't we know the name of the u.s. soldier accused of killing families in afghanistan? we're back in 70 seconds. afghans, they are demanding the right to bring an aaccused murderer to justice in their own country. but the u.s. soldier who allegedly massacred these 16 afghan civilians, including women and children, this person is now out of afghanistan in the facility that the pentagon says is much better equipped to hold him. a military source tells cnn the staff sergeant is now in kuwait. >> the u.s. soldier must be tried in kandahar city. why was he taken away from afghanistan when he murdered innocent people in this country? he is transferred to another place to be freed. why did he murder 16 people here? for what reason did he massacre them? we want to see him punished here in afghanistan. >> the fallout from the deaths of nine children, three women, and four men continues. afghan president hamid karzai told defense secretary leon panetta today that "uss troops should leave all villages and return to their bases. we'll talk about this in terms of this move to kuwait with our senior legal analyst, jeff toobin. i do want to go first to the pentagoning to chris lawrence. and chris, how has the pentagon explained this move, moving the soldier from afghanistan to kuwait? >> well, in terms of just moving the soldier to kuwait, they say it was based on one, the legal advice of some of the advisers to general allen, and two, the fact that they felt they did not have the facilities to hold a u.s. service member for any length of time. there was already a probable cause hearing, so to speak. it wasn't a full-blown hearing more like an assessment where they found they had reason to detain him longer. but very likely, his legal proceedings will probably last beyond his tour of duty. so at some point, you knew he was going to leave afghanistan if not be brought back here to the united states. >> also, chris, why is it that this particular soldier hasn't been identified yet? why don't we know his name? >> well, there's been -- we've been asking that same question for days now. that you know, even for minor crimes, if you're stopped in the street and arrested, you get a booking photo. that information is put out publicly almost immediately. why would such a heinous crime like this, why is the soldier being protected? the pentagon has pushed back and said he's not being protected that according to military rules, they do not release his name until charges have actually been brought against him and that hasn't happened yet. >> any idea when that might happen? >> we don't know. we know that the probable cause to detain him has a fine night amount of time. it may be seven days or so, but at some point, if they haven't charged him by then, they'd have to have another assessment to say okay, we're legally justified to continue holding him. but yet, everybody here at the pentagon is the reporters at least are finding this very unusual that he's been moved, no charges, knock name. very little information about where he's going. or even under what authority is sort of handling his case right now. >> chris, do me a favor and stand by. jeff toobin, if you can react to chris's point over the nebulous nature of the impending charges, the fact we haven't -- we don't yet know a name and the fact that he's now in kuwait. what does that tell you? will he be tried in the u.s.? >> the military diplomatic and legal disaster for the united states. and they are -- the authorities are trying to improvise some way of mitigating the damage. as for the lack of disclosure of his name, i think it clear little is not normal standard procedure as the pentagon is implying. but they are worried that there might be some sort of retribution against his family in the united states. obviously, when he is identified, all of us in the news media will start looking into his background, talking to his family, talking about his hometown, where he lives and who his relatives are. and those people will be at risk. i don't think the military can delay forever disclosing his name. but this is just one symptom of what a disaster this attack has been for all parts of the united states government. >> okay, jeff toobin, i've got to end that conversation. i appreciate you and i appreciate you, chris lawrence. i've got to go back to this dunwoody daycare trial. let's just listen in again. we're awaiting the verdict. let's listen to the judge. >> read it in its entirety, please. you may proceed. >> in the superior court of dekalb county, state of georgia, state of georgia versus hemy neuman, defendant, indictment number 11 cr 1364-5, verdict form, jury verdict. count 1, we the jury find the defendant as to count 1 guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of mentally ill. count 2, we the jury find the defendant as to count 2 guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. >> all right. would you please pass that to deputy moore please? so this base is very much so coming under a lot of criticism. some of the strongest coming from this veteran group called gi voice. the group goes as far as to call this lewis-mcchord base a rogue base. i want to bring in jorge gonzales, the executive director of gi voice. you help run coffee strong a shop just across the street run by veterans. you join me from lakewood, washington. jorge, you used the word rogue base. that's strong language. why? why do you say that? be specific. >> well, specifically, it's because for years now, joint base lewis-mcchord has been one of the most troubled bases in the military, according to stars and stripes. so, there's been no oversight, no kind of anybody, any politicians trying to investigate to see why there's been so many suicides, why there's been so many cases of post traumatic stress, why these soldiers keep coming back and committing for sexual assaults, more dui cases, more domestic violence issues and why things like the afghan kill team keep happening, why this soldier killed 16 civilians. there's no oversight by any politician. >> before i move on, you pin that on stars and stripes. do you agree with stars and stripes that this is a rogue base? >> i believe it is a troubled base. it is -- it's been acting without any oversight for a couple years now. there's no follow-up from anybody. >> i want to get to the calls for an investigation from congress and the leadership. ient want to be clear, we reached out to the base for comment. they haven't responded. stars and stripes calling this the base the most troubled base in the military. l.a. times calling this base a base on the brink. and stars and stripes, they quote this retired army general who points to this severe leadership problem. do you agree with that? what does that really mean? >> there is definitely a leadership problem. the leadership on the base is sending soldiers back on their deployments well knowing that they still have not taken care of their mental health issues or even their physical issues. soldiers will be deemed undeployable by medical professionals and the cane of command of these units with no medical experience can override those written profiles and still keep sending these soldiers back overseas even though they do have post traumatic stress or they're still dealing with sexual assault cases or traumatic brain injuries. >> i know because of these allegations you just outlined, you want congress to step in. you want them to investigate joint base lewis-mcchord. you're not happy with the response or perhaps the lack thereof. we reached out to washington state senator patty murray's office. her office got back to us. senator murray has been the one that has already pressured the pentagon to launch three separate investigations into mental health care on the base that are ongoing. she is also holding a previously scheduled field hearing on aiding the transition of service members back home in tacoma in april. so jorge, what more do you want? >> i want some follow through. i want this to keep happening. i want senator patty murray to keep putting pressure on congress, on the pentagon. >> we were -- >> we did reach out to patty murray last year. and we never really heard anything back until the soldiers took it upon themselves to reach out to patty murray themselves that their post traumatic stress diagnoses were being taken away from them by madigan hospital on the base. >> it sounds like they're on it, pressuring the pentagon. i spoke with murray on a totally unrelated but related in terms of veteran issue last week. they're launching a big review nationwide. as we were reading about your group, coffee strong, you refer to yourselves as pro soldier but anti-war. is that a care characterization, jorge? >> definitely, we are here to take care of the soldiers and want them to get their medical benefits they need when had he get out of the military. but we're against the wars that the government is sending them off to fight to. >> final question. when you look at the acts of these individuals, these individual soldiers or veterans, can you really blame the base? that's where they eat, with are they sleep, where they exercise. or is it simply the situations? these are situations say in afghanistan where they volunteered for. can you blame the base? >> oh, yeah, i can definitely blame the base. these soldiers are still -- they have not taken care of the wounds, the mental wounds that they suffered in afghanistan or in iraq. so the leadership keeps ending them back on these multiple deployments without taking care of them first. >> jorge gonzales of coffee strong, we're going to stay on the strong and appreciate you coming on and speaking up about it. thank you. coming up, rod blagojevich spending his first hour behind bars. so what should the former governor expect in his first night in colorado tonight? >> it's interesting when you visit southern turkey, you get a sense that the assad dictatorship is a brutal machine and that his crack down is effective and the uprising, are really no match at the moment if the regime goes on a full pushback. a lot of people i talked to who have family or relatives or business contacts in syria were saying the opposition fears unless there is outside assistance such as arms and other assistance, communication assistance, that the opposition might, in fact, be severely crushed and brutal little defeated by the dictatorship. >> what about the refugees themselves? i cited the number 14,000. that kris osborn increase. could turkey handle these numbers? >> i think turkey can handle small numbers perhaps 10,000, up to 50,000, maybe up to 100,000. right now we're talking about 10,000, 12,000. if 2 comes this is a massive refugee flow and there are large cities right across the turkish border if the regime carries a full assault, you could see a massive flow of over 100,000 people. that's when turkey would go turn to the united states and allies and nato and ask for assistance. you can see how this would bring a more internationalist approach. >> you wrote radical islam is an argument against washington intervening. what do you mean by that? >> what i mean is the following. people i talk to who have just been in syria, including journalists and americans are suggesting that there is no reason right now whatsoever to suggest that there is a radical islamist element running this uprise package these are people like you and i who want democracy and want the dictatorship to end. the longer the world watches, the majority of people in syria being sunni muslims, there's going to be a perception that the outside world allowed this slaughter to continue because these people are muslims. i think this will radicalize the people of syria based on that identity. we saw this in bosnia, another secular country in which assault graduallily radicalized some elements of the population so bosnians very pro western in a couple years time went into a breeding ground where al qaeda and others could recruit. you could see a similar pattern in syria. there is no fear right now, but i think the longer we let this persecution of sunni muslims continue by a minority regime, the higher the chances are that this will turn into a conflict in which people say the outside world lets us get killed because we're muslims. >> so to prevent that from happening, to prevent a future radicalization, talk about turkey stepping up to the plate. turkey's role as a growing power in the middle east. if war weary washington continues to be reluctant in what's happening in terms of syria, you've written that could be a blessing for turkey. how do you mean? >> well, wrote this on cnn a few days ago. the idea is that turkey does not like what's going on next door, the slaughter and doesn't want people getting killed. it's also limited in the sense that turkey's regional self-power is also its limitation in syria. turkey has built a tremendous amount of power in the middle east through the past decade through trade, through commerce, through schools and through diplomacy by basically making a case that it is a country that gets things done without using power. now people are saying, is turkey going to intervene in syria. that goes against the argument of turkey's self-power. turkey has to determine how much it can get done within self-power, with diplomacy and trade and how much through the use of arms. that's where the turks are finding out their regional strength, their self-power is also their limitation in their syria policy. up thely, somebody will have to decide how and when to use arms and outside intervention to stop the dictatorship. >> it needs to be a well planned delicate intervention. come back anytime. i know it's early but i may not get to say this tomorrow. guess who's leading cnn anchors in the march madness challenge?
